the apple protection plan. if you get the student discount (which anyone can do), you can get the 30gb 5th gen. ipod and a 2-year protection plan for $319.

i checked out that axim review. it looks pretty sweet, except for a couple things... 1, it's a pda, not a media player... 2, it's got a crappy battery life.... 3, it had mediocre benchmarks. other than that, it's pretty damn awesome (unfortunately, it's a dell )

iRiver is actually quite cool when it comes to warranties. They don't check any of your serial numbers or anything, they just ask if you bought the product within one year. If you say yes they believe you. And you can actually send your iriver to any HQ in the world... USA, Germany, or Korea despite what the warranty says. Believe me I've used it.

Let me just say that people with the tiny 2" ipod screen will be squinting to watch a TV show. I'm not LCD screen expert, but this is a beautiful screen with a nice contrast. Even with this 3.7" screen, however, I sometimes can't see parts of movies (only when there is little light in the movie) without squinting. I'd give the iriver a 9/10 for video playing. Without even seeing the ipod screen's contrast level ability, I'm absolutely sure that it can achieve no more than the iriver. Perfect video on a 3.7" 320x240 with good contrast (not to mention adjustable contrast) is going to be better than a 2" 320x240.

As for battery life, I haven't tested it in a controled environment, but it seems to bring a good 12 hours of on-and off battery in my day. Today I used it for: 1.5 hours of video at least, 2 hours of recording with internal mic, and probably 3-4 hours of music. Sometimes I don't turn off the player (and it has stopped playing music), but it has yet to die on me if I leave with it fully charged. At least 8 hours of running and it still has juice when I get home.

Something to consider, what is your computer or laptop used for? Is it not used for media as well? A pda is the ultimate handheld, it is along the lines of a handheld computer in which it can allow you to do almost anything*. Before portable MP3 players or Video players came out, what did you play them on? But of course, your versatile do it all computer!

I use my Dell X50 for videos, mp3, web browsing, and even chatting. That's a different story... and this thread is already off the topic, but don't bash on something that you haven't used before first hand.

As for the ipod, I have a sibling, friends, and other family members that have them, and I've used one on a few road trips with my cousin before I had my pda(split the headphone jack), yes they work and do what they are supposed to do, but I still do not have any reason to believe that they are a best buy for features or quality, but definately for fashion and looks, kind of like how air Jordans are supposedly better than other basketball shoes with a price premium of up to 3X, even though they're all made of the same materials, or could it just be a gimmick to make pple buy into a trend?...

edit: If I was in the market, I'd buy the Iriver PMP, and again, this is a HOT deal, might get it for a gift, so thanks OP. The Ipod may do its job, but this has features that the ipod doesn't touch.

reencoding is quite fast with the provided software though, so it wasn't a big deal for me at all...I guess if you have a pentium II or something on that level it would take you a while, but honestly it was quite easy. I reencoded it to its current resolution and it took almost no time at all.

This does NOT support OGG. I'm taking it back to Costco. The screen does look very nice though and its very nice in general. Sure it can play divx/xvid but no OGG? That's unacceptable to me.

One of the main reasons for buying at Sam's club or Costco is for their 100% satisfaction guaranty policy, which is well worth the membership fee. There is no time policy for returning items except for computers. I bought this unit because the price is the cheapest anywhere, the return policy is excellent and the features compared to other products at the $200 mark cannot be beat. And if I don't like it when it arrives this Friday I can return it for a full refund and Costco will even refund my shipping cost. I have turned many people over to Sam's and Costcos. I told my buddy about their policy and he was able to return a defective Xbox after 2 years with no receipt (he was in the computer). They refunded the difference and he walked out with a new Xbox and 2 additional games. And if you have a business card you can obtain the cheaper business membership which will get you in the door a few hours before normal memberships.

The Iriver comes with a 1 year warantee...I called them actually - I had upgraded the firmware to 2.04 and it was in korean or something. They told me I could send it in and get a replacement but I decided to look online for an answer because they said it would take a week to mail it to me (a few days for shipping to them and a few days for shipping it to me).

The warantee is pretty good if it covers upgrading to a firmware which they don't support...

So how much will the video ipod cost comparative to the iriver? I really haven't seen anyone compare price. If it's $500, then it's not really worth it compared to the iriver huh? Also, people generally like to have a landscape format for video players as opposed to a portrait format that the ipod comes in. I also wonder, the iriver can be used by multiple programs, whereas ipod generally has some sort of symbiotic nature with itunes.

you realize that the gross profit on those warranties is ~65%. meaning that you're buying something that isn't worth the cost. when i used to work retail, we got yelled at if we didn't sell those warranties, because it's the only thing that makes a retail store money. the electronic device itself is sold at a gross margin of like 10%. the idea of "insuring" something is really catchy to people like you though, so you buy it and don't think anything of it. and the manufacturer generally gives it warranty anyways.

Can the Ipod Video play XVid and Divx? Iriver does.
