Yes, I have sent 2 rebates for IO magic stuff. One took 1 yr, I am not kidding. The other one has been about 4 months now. :(

Can't comment about the rebate portion, but this card DOES NOT suck.
It's a rebadged Pinnacle capture card. Heck, it's not even rebadged,
actually. It's a Pinnacle Studio TV card in an I/O Magic box.
Works great.

The Power VCR software that comes with the card is crippled so that
you can't do straight video capture (i.e. video in, as opposed
to TV tuner capture) through the card, but if you
buy a standard version of Power VCR you can use the video capture
features of the card.

This card is a hot deal at the normal CompUSA price. A STEAL at
$19.99 (if you get the rebate).

If you don't get the rebate after the stated period on the rebate AND it was advertised @ CompUSA, bring your supporting documentation in and ask to speak to a manager.

They should be able to give you a cash refund on the spot for an advertised rebate, esp. if you have documentation and it's been a reasonable period beyond the dates quoted for your check.

I thought it was a good deal at twice the price so I jumped a month or two ago. The card works fine, the PVR software barely qualifies as mediocre though. Yeah, it'll do timed recording and time shifting, but the interface is horrible (it's a Cyberlink product and I think their interface department is run by poorly trained fish) and it has a habit of forgetting to record sometimes if you've changed any of the timed recordings recently. Look at it as a decent TV tuner for $19.99 after mir. Maybe you'll like the software more than I do, and if not, find a shareware tuner and spend $5 on registration.

You are asuming that CompUSA will still be in business and that is a HUGE assumption!

Hey GetReal:

Do you know something about CompUSA's finances? Are they really
on the ropes?

Can you use this card with other software, such as ATI's PVR software and TV guide?

Ok, well I have looked at every one of those PDF's (I hate PDF's) and don't see the
product being discussed here. Can someone or maybe I should say will someone tell
me what page of that CompUSA ad I should be looking on? :)

Or at least tell the price that will be paid at the store, when buying this deal? Thanks!

Kwadguy and I and others had a fairly long thread on this a while ago. ll you need to do is have the right software for the vid cap and s-vid stuff to work. Do an easy search and you can find the FTP site to download the Pinnacle drivers if you wish.

Edit: Here is the FTP site for the actual Pinnacle drivers. You have to install all of them starting from the oldest to the newest--read the directions. ftp://ftp.pinnaclesys.de/driver/pc/pctv/

Edit2: Also, you can work the VID ports and s-vid using the full version of PowerVCR. Get a crippled trial version off the Cyberlink site, or search around and find a working copy to try out.

You WILL NOT get a cash rebate from I/O Magic! So if it's not a good deal to you without the rebate avoid the buy. I/O Magic has stiffed me twice on rebates, and there seems to be no way to get the money. If you complain LOUDLY many many times they will send you a Gift Certificate for a purchase THAT'S ONLY GOOD FOR PURCHASES MADE ON THEIR WEB SITE! I recieved a $10.00 gift certificate for a $25.00 CASH rebate and a $10.00 gift certificate for a $15.00 CASH rebate. Their reasoning on both to me was:

" We recieved more responses to the rebates then we expected"

How is that my problem??? Avoid this company if you need the rebate to made this a deal for you, they simply won't send it to you no matter who much you call!

Damn, and I need a TV card!

I'm always amazed by the people who say they get stiffed on rebates, even from bankrupt companies. I just keep good copies of all the stuff I had to mail in, and follow this simple process: (1) wait 3 months, then if the rebate check hasn't arrived, (2) call the (usually) toll-free # and start reminding the rebate center, and, if the rebate doesn't come in within 5-6 months, I just go back to the store and (politely but persistently) complain to the store manager til I get the money right from the retailer (or at least a store credit). Step 3 is critical for those 1 out of 10-20 rebates which don't ever arrive. If the manager is not immediately cooperative (I find they are at least 50% of the time), I then ask for the name/number of the person at corporate HQ I should contact about the matter. Works every time -- they don't want corporate hearing their names, since they know it'll get bumped back down to them for resolution.

Not sure why a retailer would give you any money or credit???? CompUSA told me on both rebates that I just explained that it isn't their rebate, that they have no responsiblity over the money promised by another company not connected with them, and that's the word from CompUSA's Corporate Office, who's number I recieved from the Manager of my local store. Seems he felt no fear of the Corp Office hearing his name since he was following Corp policy by not giving any money or credit promised by another company. I have a copy of every rebate, every UPC code and every reciept from ever rebate purchase I have ever made and if the company in question simply refuses to give you what they promised, aside from a lawsuit you can call the BBB, that's about it as far as I can see. And as far as CompUSA suggested to me. Wish I had your luck with rebates friend! You seem to be one out of hundreds that has been able to resolve these shakey rebate issues that the rest of us here are having with some companies!

It comes down to this: Keep a copy of the advertisement. If the rebate does not come through, then they are liable, since they are promoting the sale price based upon the rebate. If they did not advertise the rebate in the store or in the paper, then it's really their prerogative to backup the offer with their own money.
