Hot i7 Chip

So I've got the 920-chip with the Noctua 1336 cooler and it's running pretty hot in my opinion. Is it possible that some processors are a lot hotter than others?

My normal temps are ~ 45-50. With stock volt / frequency.

My friend has the 920 as well with the same cpu cooler, and his temperatures are normally around 35c.
What should i do? :/

Got the same stock i7 920 with the stock Dell cooler, set on permanent Turbo, and those are exactly my temps. Doesnt seem to hurt anythnig and the rig runs great. 🙂

you can try reseatting the heatsink and cleaning off the thermal compound/reapply it.

how is your case ventilation? What are your ambient temps like? Just because you have the same cooler doesn't mean you will have the same temps... too many other variables.

I did reseat the heatsink and cleaned / reaapplied the thermal paste. No difference.
I have the Lian Li PC-A7110 case. Includes 6x120mm fans, all aluminum full tower case.

This is odd, i took off the side panel of my case and now my core temperatures are 42c, 37c, 39c, 37c. The case stands on the top of my desk, I'll try later on to place it on the floor instead (which would give it more breathing space).

I could be an ass and post something sarcastic like I usually do, but I won't. People too often on here spit out some number without any relevant specifics to go with it. Some of those specifics include monitoring program, CPU load, probe (CPU or Core), internal case temps, and last but not least? expectations. If you expect to see temps similar to a Core 2 with an i7 then you can pretty much forget about it. At load a Core i7 with equivalent voltage and speed will have a higher temperature reading. It?s not an apples to apples comparison. The same can be said about monitoring programs. Core Temp, SpeedFan, and Real Temp all report different temperatures. All these programs really do is guess the temperature of the CPU relative to the probe. Which one you choose is up to you. Real Temp and Core Temp will report the individual core probe temps. SpeedFan will do that too, but also provide temps on the whole CPU using another (less accurate) probe. Temps reported by the BIOS vary wildly from manufacturer to manufacturer and obviously cannot report temperatures at load. There really isn?t anything in your post that provides us the specific information needed to allow us to give you an accurate response.

Robster, AdamK47 makes a verry good point, are you and your friend using the same monitoring program (should b the newest version of coretemp)? If not then you can't compare temps, also what temp is your house at compared to your friends? Finnaly if everything (house ambient, monitoring program, what you consider full load) is the same, then try running at idle and compare the load vs idle temps for your's vs your friends. If your delta T is much higher then something might be wrong (or your chip might run at a different stock voltage, or you might have hyperthreading on while your friend has it off), if hte delta T is similar then don't worry too much. 50C for full load on an i7 (even at stock voltage) is not too bad. My 920 (on stock cooling until my new waterblock comes in) runs at about 73C at load (prime 95 8 threads).
