Hot I.T. skills!?

Hey whatsup. I'n january in going in for my final 6 months as an M.I.S student. I've got a semi-decent skillset for my age, but I'm def no genious. I try to keep up reading on the latest stuff goin on. But befor I graduate I'd like to add at least one more marketable skill to my resume. I'm not looking to master anything, just look further into something and be prepared for it. What would you all suggest?

Right now some hot stuff seems to be Oracle db, Unix Admin, and XML. Does anyone have any suggestions of something else to look into or do any of you currently work with Oracle and/or xml and what are your thoughts?
 
Recent poll I read said that C++ is technically the most saught after right now followed by unix and Java I believe.
 
yeah I read that everwhere also about c++ and java. I'm all set with full fledged programming though. I'm looking for stuff more cutting edge/exciting 😎 (yea right i know 😉)
 
I've noticed up here in Ontario people are screaming for SQL/VB techs...I saw one job posted for 120k just doing VB and SQL, with fully paid training in two other subjects, (He took XML and Java I think)

 
Database stuff is always needed. SQL server is probably the best place to start becuase it seems to be the most popular for smaller or medium sized businesses.

I've also seen a lot of stuff for peoplesoft. Hey, if you're really feeling adventurous get a copy of .NET beta and stick on your resume some .NET stuff 🙂
 
Actually i been reading a .net mag for the past month, shiot looks great but alot more difficult to learn!... i have decent knowledge of asp, cfml, html, sql, vbscript, tcp/ip,nt,2k admin, linux apache, flash, U.i design, access, and technician stuff...

Anyone here deal with VPNs in a business enviroment? If so how do you like it?
 
Well heck you could get some certifications before you go looking for a job. They're better than nothing! If you go fast you could have your MCSD in a reasonable amount of time and it wouldn't look bad after your name 😛
 
PEOPLE SKILLS!!

You are MIS, so management is your game. Learn how to tell people no without offending them. Learn how to dodge questions, learn how to budget things quite low but still give room to move. Learn to be the head geek!!
 
ahahah thats actually what i have in mind.. head geek.. me and my current boss are somewhat close ... he's the I.T director.. he goes through alot of hectic stuff but theres no doubt in my mind i could sooner than later do his job.. i def want to have a very strong knowledge of many fields though.. cuz i know you cant get there over ngiht and im starting to look at post graduation jobs. My boss actually offered me a good job but i want out of boston for a while. I've been living in the area for 22 years so its time for something new!
 
go into security 😀...its a dynamic field with new threats everyday....business never stops, pretty stable job...from my experience anyway... 🙂
 
security? yeah ive started 2 of the books i got for free frmo the hot deals section on security.. it def does interest me.. what type of stuff do you do?
