Eight pounds is painful if you're going to carry it around everyday on your arm with a tote. I think it's reasonable with a backpack, and definitely fine if it's only going to be moved on odd occasions. As for the IR remote, that's pretty cool :).

In terms of options, I'd say that the only things that are _really essential_ are the Briteview, 128mb ATI, and the _12 cell battery_. You _don't_ want to be running an A64 on 8 cells! The "probably desirable" options are Bluetooth and 5400rpm hard drive (if you're not planning on buying a 7k60 - $150 is a bit much for it, IMHO). Memory and CPU aren't much of a big deal, since you can theoretically upgrade both of them yourself (memory more than the CPU).

hey guys, just out of curiousity.... did anyone do a config printout from the store kiosk? if so, look at lower left hand side. It says: V2000 Free wireless upgrade, $50 mail in rebate. Does this mean we have a 6th rebate at our hands?

edited: nevermind, i think that's for wireless service...getting too excited with all these rebates

So I marched into OD today and questioned the HP rebate issue ($49.99 receipt price vs. $69 requirement for rebate). Manager told me to go ahead and mail in the rebate and if HP sends a letter stating they cannot honor the rebate he will reimburse me. Also no luck with the staples $30 rebate. Oh well. Time to send in the rebates.

Really easily. OfficeDepot has a 50% off upgrades deal going right now on the zv6000, which lets you put a ludicrous amount of features on the thing for practically free. Only area it might be lacking in is the battery power - although I've heard stories of 2:30 battery life with heavy usage (and a 12 cell battery). That ain't great compared to a Centrino, although it's workable. Also, the Dell has a better, higher-res screen. If you were to spend a grand on the zv6000, you would get much, much more power.

well, finally took the plung...went with the additional $75 offer

AMD 64 3200+
512MB
DVD±RW
more upgrades:
60GB
12cell battery
15.4" Brightview

$959.99 - $400 rebates = $559.99 shipped AR

I dont think DELL can touch this. Dell freaking doesnt start their DVD±RW till like $1000+.

hmm that souds good..

but..
hmm

doesn't AMD64 takes more battery out??

and plus.. I don't feel safe about getting the Warranty from Office Depot.. not HP..
when I add the 3yr warranty from OD to the HP deal,
there's about $300 diff. in the price.

as i mentioned it my other thread
x200m and x300 has difference.. no??

x200m= integrated
x300 = not, and pci-e.... (upgradeable)

and the monitor too.
dell got its Ultrasharp with better resolution..

AMD64 3200 will take more power out.. than Pentium M 2.0G.
Bigger battery, heavier laptop..

Dell has its own 4yr warranty... getting a warranty from the manufacturer is better than getting it from some random electronic company... in fact, i don't think OD can offer Dell's CS.

well, I am not trying to argue who's better or not.. but.. I am just trying to find out if getting HP for $300 is better than getting Dell for $300 more..

There's always trade-offs. The Inspiron 6000 you cite is also about twice as expensive as the most comparable zv6000 (in terms of CPU, RAM, etc.), assuming you can even get the 40% off coupon to get it down that far (dedicated graphics 6000 is a _small business option_, from what I can tell). Is it twice as good? It really depends on what you value. Personally, I don't think an X300 is all that exciting compared to the 200m (33% faster, ooh, they both still suck). The screen is worse, sure, but taking into account the cost savings, many people find it livable.

The 12 cell battery was like a $20 upgrade. This gives the zv6000 reasonably good battery life (I've heard 3-3.5 hours of non-heavy usage, 2 hours of really heavy stuff). The best battery Dell hands you is 8 cells, so it's not like it's strictly comparable anyways. Again, cost vs performance.

Also, you can buy a 3 year HP warranty with this thing for $245 - it should be listed on the right-hand side of the order page as an "accessory".

Update: they shipped...

... the printer. No surprise, really, but at least things are moving along.

Here is a summary of my order and recommendation:

AMD 3200+ DTR Processor
15.4" WXGA Brightview Display (I love the display)
1 GB RAM (2 X 512 MB PC 2700)
80 GB HD (5400 RPM)
8X DVD +/- Burner with Lightscribe and Dual Layer (The other burner is 2.4x, trust me)
128 MB Xpress200m Graphics Card (Only drawback but good enough for me, for now )
802.11G Wireless card with Bluetooth
12 Cell Battery
Win XP Home (Will get Pro from University)
$45 Ground Shipping
HP 3847 Printer

All this for $1150 (including Tax and shipping) but before $400 rebates. I think I made out like a bandit.

Edit - I used FW for this deal but kudos to the OP for sharing with ATers.

Anandtech has some benchmarks up comparing the X300 to the 200M, but in a 16mb configuration. Long story short, 200M runs at about 66% of the speed of the X300 in those (serious fill-rate limitations). Remember that, since these laptops have single-channel memory systems, Anand's talk about how HyperMemory is so fast is no longer true, either.

Unknown is whether the onboard video is using a 64-bit or 32-bit pipe to the memory. Apparently two chip memory configs use a 64-bit pipe, which does a lot to even out memory bandwidth constraints (and very little to fix the real problem - the 200m only has two pixel pipelines).

Heads up: There are problems now with meeting the terms of both of the $50 rebates (unless they extended the 8/30 deadline on the $50 Power of Green rebate. The other $50 printer/laptop rebates requires printer price of at least $69; but the invoice shows printer at $49.

justus, good point..but if you read up, it has been confirmed that the store manager said, because it's an advertised deal, $499... you will get the rebate for the printer and even the one that expired yesterday... the rebates are valid the whole week...nothing next week..
