hmmm buy a 2.4GHz P4 for $150, and sell the rest of the system for $500?
get the P4 3.06GHz $650... hmm not hot..

dunno this doesn't look hot to me...

athlon barton 2500+ with nforce2 and dvdrw, 1GB ram would prolly only cost like $600... with faster video...

sorry if you consider this threadcrap.. but i'm just sharing my thoughts...

Cheapest prices on Pricewatch:

Pentium 4 3.06 ghz: $554
1 ghz Memory: $100 at a minimum, more depending on type.
60gb hard drive: $67 at least
DVD+R drive: $217

We're up to the price of the system before we consider the motherboard, case, video card, keyboard/mouse, floppy, cdrom drive, sound, speakers, or modem.

In other words, if you want a Pentium 4 3.06ghz system, this is a hot deal. If you want to compare it to value priced AMD setups, maybe not - but who asked about AMD systems?

would've been nice to get DVD-R/-RW

You won't get it from HP.

for one thing...

dvd-rw is dead. microsoft has announced built in support for dvd+rw in the next windows, only will have 3rd party support for dvd-rw.

i will tell you all about this machine now. the motherboard is made by asus , it is likely some i845 chipset, i dont have exact specs. the modem is an agere by lucent. firewire card will be a TI chipset, the geforce 4 mx420 is made by asus model v7160 . the ram is name brand stuff only.

HP's cases are made by inwin . for the most part, dont take this as truth... but i'm 90% sure about these manufacturers. if hp switched to a "lesser" brand, the motherboard may be made by MSI.

dvd-rw is not dead. Don't assume too much just yet.

Many companies have announced support for both formats, which would certainly not be too surprising if MS does the same. Even if not, the fact that a single player can support both formats means both could still be viable for some time. It's not like VHS and Betamax, where a player had to go one way or the other (or basically be two separate players in one unit).

With the cost of DVD-R(W) being considerably less, and currently having more 4X players and media, I'd say it's leading right now. And it's not like we'll keep a DVD writer forever - much like the early cd recorders, as technology improves, we'll be wanting to upgrade.
