lol...not a bad looking unit though. Most portable MP3 CD player I've seen so far...but the fact remains...you can't get much smaller if you're using a huge ass CD.

The only place I knew of to order was from iriver of america's web site. Yahoo's price is the same as the price on iriver's site. Not really a hot deal but a sweet mp3 player nonetheless.

I just found out about this one over the weekend... it is a sweet looking player but alas no AM just FM.. and I happen to listen to sports and talk radio sometimes...

I actually prefer these type of players to MD players because the media can be used in other devices such as your CDROM drive, car audio deck, and home stereo system. So recording is easier and perhaps less expensive.

If you order from the iRiver website, you get free shipping.

MD... what a joke.. just another example of Sony trying to ram its own inferior proprietary technology down our throats.

There is an electronics/computer store that sells the iRiver SlimX in NYC on 5th and 42-43rd near the public library. Price is either similiar or less then the iRiver site. Warning though, you will get it right up the *ss because of taxes. Still good for you guys and gals who can't wait to get this great device.

people should stop hating on the minidisc lovers...i mean it's so obvious that you guys are jealous :)

but seriously, netmd is gonna make people think wrong about the minidisc technology. I'm holding out for a new one...

and by the way...i believe that there are many other manufacturers making these "inferior products"...and having a really small audio player isn't exactly equivalent to someone ramming something down my throat!

yea, that explains why i didn't get a minidisc player... trust me, if i thought md was better, i would have gotten one.

i'm pretty sure they already have one out. bit pricey, but it's out nonetheless. imho netmd is vastly overrated. sure, you can transfer tracks quickly. but at what price? you have to use their proprietary openmg jukebox software, that uses copyright protection technology. from minidisc.com:

"It?s also a copyright protection technology, so it restricts transfers that the software doesn?t authenticate as legitimate for transfer."

trust me, i was excited as you about netmd, until i read the fine print. don't forget, all those numbers for speeds and capacity are in lp4.

and having a really small audio player isn't exactly equivalent to someone ramming something down my throat!

that's about the only good thing, it's smaller.

frugalguy, there are some users of the SLIMX that hang out at www.mp3.com hardware forum.
You may find some good info there and I think even a review.

Agreed...MDLP4 sucks. Like listening to the radio. Not much of a diff between SP and MDLP2 though.

Slow transfer rates aren't much of an issue since the MZ-R91 generation when auto-trackmarking was issued. Just leave it on overnight or for a few hours and it's done. You don't have to sit there and watch it.

i think that depends on how you plan to use it... i totally agree, minidisc is probably better for some people, but for me, the fast transfer is pretty important. i don't always have a few hours to transfer music. that's just about the only reason i didn't get a minidisc player.

I love my SlimX. I've had it for a couple weeks now. Only bad things is the boot time, it doesn't work very well in the cold (about 15degrees F or lower I'd say) and the plastic covering the LCD is getting scratched. Oh yea, it seems really picky about the way the car adapter power cord is plugged in and will shutoff if you bump it and knock the cord a bit loose. I also wish there was a hardware switch for changing between FM and CD. If you listened to a CD last, and want to listen to the radio, you have to boot up and than switch. If you turn it off with the radio playing, when you turn it back on it will turn on (instantly) to the radio. Despite these things I still love it. Its got a ton of options, and there's lots of little things like the sound fading in and how it resumes to the track you were playing when it was shut off. Its great for road trips. If you're looking for a CD MP3 player I don't think you can do any better than a SlimX right now. If you got the cash I highly reccomend it.

This is what OpenMG does.

1. Verifies that you have YOUR NetMD recorder attached to the link.
2. Encrypts the audio out so that it is unique to your PC so that you cannot transfer the audio file to another PC.
3. Allows you to download a song 3 times to your MD, unless you transfer it back from the MD to your PC. (Meaning there can only be 3 copies in existance outside of your PC of that song).

<< that's about the only good thing, it's smaller. >>

I didn't want the NetMD features. Too much of a hassle to me. I just leave it on overnight with a playlist in WinAmp or my CD deck. I have a MZ-R909 but I might pick up a NetMD deck from Japan.

Either way, there's damn well no way I'll ever buy a MP3 player, especially a CD-sized one. I'll bet people in Japan and Hong Kong would laugh at you if you carried around a brick like that. I asked my friend that owns one of those electronics stores in HK and he told me that they sell 7-8 MD units for ever CD player or MP3 CD player sold.

The CD is dead. Long live minidisc. It's already big in Asia and Europe (those crazy Brits have TONS of MD stuff...)....I'm just wondering why the hell N. America always has to have huge stuff. e.g notebook PCs.

definetly...i have a rio volt made by the same company with probably some of the same core components and it takes like 20-30 seconds to boot and index all 200+ songs. the cold issue is pretty bad, especially now that its winter in michigan. i have it mounted in my car (which is parked outside my garage and gets pretty darn cold) and it takes a couple minutes for it to warm up and read reliably but by that time im already at school. luckily i mounted it just next to the heat vent so i can give it a quick toast when necessary.

that's still two more steps than i'd like... limitations are bad...

it's not going to take off in the states for a while, if at all.

well, the size in this case would purely be a "cool" factor, since i'm carrying the thing in my backpack anyways. to answer your question... the people are bigger... ;)

That, and speed, are your reasons MD hasn't caught on in NA, Ronin. Sorry, but if I want a small player, I'll buy a flash memory based MP3 player.

SoundVision? That place is pretty cool...not the best deals, but they have some stuff that's harder to find in larger (BB, CC, CUSA) electronics/computer stores. Like a whole bunch of awesome Fujitsu lappies that I'd never seen at retail stores in the US.
