please excuse my ignorance and I don't mean to thread crap, but are IBM laptops really that much better than say Dells? I just ask because for what you get with that IBM, I just got a Dell 5160 that blows it out of the water (at least just looking at the specs you listed) for much less. I'm sure it has been explained before but what makes IBM laptops so great? Thanks

Thinkpads are the Lexus of laptops. Built like tanks, eligant designs, advanced features...yes they are.

This one is literally a tank; over 8lbs, 2" thick.

/me clears throat...

Well, the old addage goes that you get what you pay for. With IBM you get some great service and a notebook that clearly has had much more design time poured into it. Is a BMW really all that much better than a Pontiac? Is the Rolex better than the Timex? I dont know, they both do the same thing but reputation is built on past performance and with IBM you usually aren't dissapointed. But then again that is just my humble opinion. Lug around a laptop day after day and you will see why IBM can charge the price they do.

edit, My rant is in regards to the T and X series... i have no dealings with the G

It certainly won't beat that crazy Dell $750 off $1500 deal, but this is really a great price for a IBM with 3GHz p4 CPU. Maybe someone else can explain more about this. I owned a Thinkpad iSeries-1200 with 500 Celeron before, and it a lot better than the compaq 2100T im using right with 2GHz celeron. :(

Both IBM and Dell make great laptops, though I'd prefer my Latitude C840 over a Thinkpad anyday.

If you travel and work with your laptop on location a lot, Thinkpad is the best.
Super durable. Made to last.
I could not be happier with my T41.

The G series is a 'desktop replacement', so weight and battery life was not a prime concern in design.

IBM = tank

My first "notebook" Thinkpad 380E still powers up on the original battery.
Whooping Pentium 166MMX power.

You're on crack. I had the exact same model Dell and it doesn't hold a candle to the IBM's and HP/Compaqs I've used. My boss is the proud owner of that one and he upgraded me to an HP/Compaq NC8000 laptop that's just better in every respect. Granted it's got newer components, but it's built better and I have yet to have an issue with it. The Dell creaked when you lifted it, had a cheap plasticy feel, and I had problems with the CDRom and the ethernet port not working.

Perhaps the T series are, but this has 128mb ram, a cdrom, integrated video, and no wireless. Those certainly are not "advanced features". For someone carrying a laptop around on business, the T-series is ideal, but for someone needing a desktop replacement, this is not a bargain. A few days ago you could buy a fully loaded Dell with 3-4 year service for this price.

I have a Thinkpad A21P and an older Dell Latitude Cpx P3 450. There is no comparison, Thinkpads are wayyy better than Dells. My Dell had a screwed up keyboard, one of the speakers were busted and the touchpad click buttons were done for. I dunno, i maybe an isolated incident but once u pickup a Thinkpad and then compare it to a Dell, u'll know right away which one is better.

And for keyboards on laptops there is no comparison TP > *

IBM thinkpads are second to none.

However, the G series is probably one of IBM's not-so-good ideas. IT's a desktop dressed as a thinkpad and really isn't worth the money - you won't be toting this around (its obese), so the extra money for the solid build isn't worth spending. Therefore, go buy an actual desktop, where build-strength isn't so crucial and you can, therefore, get more bang for your buck.

I've read over at forum.thinkpads.com that this series will be discontinued soon.

Bah! I've still got a Thinkpad 760 or something; 486 DX2-66 with 12 megs of ram and 540 meg HD. Still powers up first time everytime. Keyboard feels new and the track point works flawlessly. I even used it to write a paper last June.

*hugs his X31*

this is so light and portable. if u didn't know, the X series and a couple other series' shell are built with titanium. i believe the T series are built with some magnesium alloy but supposedly almost as strong as titanium, but not as costly.

intel was doing crash recovery (literally) where they drop laptops from a certain height and see if they can survive. ibm laptops have known to out-survive even panasonic's toughbooks.

Thinkpads ARE better than Dell's Inspirons. However Panasonic Toughbooks are EXCEPTIONAL.

Thinner, lighter and just as rugged as Thinkpads. Also Toughbooks have extra features like a touch screen. I had a photog friend who took a ToughBook to Iraq. Most of the GI issued laptops I believe were Panansonic Toughbooks.

Of course there is Alienware but the prices are exhorbitant.

Anyway if $$ was not object, I would choose a Thinkpad over an Inspiron.

IBM understands and works with business user needs, Dell is cheap and has a consumer mentality.

You can't really compare a toughbook since they're meant for far more abusive environments then thinkpads;)

I agree w/mikeford. I have both. For hands down quality, durability and reliability, I go with (and recommend) IBM. For can't beat prices, I choose and recommend Dell to friends and family. Alienware is nice, but as mentioned above, crazy expensive.

I've been thinking about getting a powerbook lately. I assume they're pretty reliable (along the lines of IBM).
