HOT HOT HOT - All Media Play stores closing.

Jeeze, that sucks, but I'm not surprised. It was always a cool place, but nobody was ever buying anything. Ponderous that they haven't cut the hell out of the prices of CDs to make them cheaper than downloads. I don't know how CD focused stores stay in business...

Went tonight. Not very hot. Things are 20-50% off supposedly. I think all they did was raise prices and then tell you to take 30% off of the higher price. I can find better deals on CDs and DVDs online and better deals on books in the bargain shelves at B&N.

I don't think they raised prices at all. I believe that was there problem/downfall. Their prices were on average 15% to 25% higher than everywhere else. They would advertise new DVD release at $20 while Bestbuy (their sister store), Circuit City, and Wal-Mart would be selling them for $14 to $17.

Best Buy sold there stake in media play a few years ago!

The sign outside said 20-50% off, but stuff inside was 10-40% off. Video games were all 10% off and they had a pretty crappy selection.

DVDs were insane. I saw "The Pacifier" marked for $28 (-10%). No wonder they're going out of business.

The local news in Syracuse NY (there's two in the vicinity) said there was a ton of complaints that Media Play had actually RAISED THEIR PRICES before applying any Going Out of Business discounts.

Guys, its not media play raising thier prices. A liquidator most likely owns the stufff inside all the Media Play stores, and they set the prices not media play.

QFT. My uncle is a liquidator and this is exactly how it works for him.

Just today, the Connecticut Attorney General also announced he is investigating the company?s sale of gift cards as well.

LOL, the going-out-of-business Mediaplay is still selling gift cards? who would be dumb enough...

Eh there's one not too far from where I plan to be when I'm out and about today will see if there's anything worth buying. I'd also agree that their stuff was always overpriced compared to their competition. Folks looking for deals might want to check again towards the end of January. I've been involved in a liquidation myself and the liquidator didn't really start lowering prices on stuff until the last week of the liquidation. A liquidator's basic goal is to make as much as possible as they can from the sale of stuff before they go into "get rid of it" mode.
