HOT!!!! HI/FI STEREO JVC VCR $39.60 @ COMPUSA

my compusa store here in lufkin, tx. had these stacked at the front door. no advertising or anything, just a sign that said $39.60. bought 3 of these outstanding units. they were gone inabout 30 minutes here, but it is worth a trip to your local store.

LOL, I was wondering when tapes were gonna be killed...man, 40 bucks for a good vcr. I paid 70 for my DVD player 2 years ago. Since then, I really have no use for tapes.

this unit is listed at the online site. $79.99 by the way. why are you even responding bundy? trying to put down those of use who still watch the 500+ tape library we have?

Damn I wish I had a CompUSA near me as I could use a new VCR. Mine is still sitting there with a tape stuck in it making clicking noise. I think I only paid $50 for it 3 years ago so this one is right in my price range.

AlbundyHere,

Yeah DVD is of course better than VCR...but you can't record anything with your $70 DVD player. You're gonna have to spend a lot more than $40 to record video to DVD.

Bargingunner was just giving us a good deal for a VCR...he wan't trying to sell us VCR technology over DVD technology. Until DVD recording becomes mainstream (i.e. affordable), VCR will still be around...so guess you'll just have to wait a bit longer for "tapes to get killed". Good find Bargingunner...thanks for the deal.

Hey, Tominator, I also have a JVC SVHS VCR and I think it has great visuals, but one huge drawback: we can't get Dolby Digital onto our videotapes.

if ya read the compusa adspecials page they have a little disclaimer about the ads for some texas stores being different. They may have started ther company there and have different specials there. I hope not though. I will definetly get one if they are available here in CA. cant beat that price.

oh btw most(certainly not all) dvd players read vcd format which you can burn to a simple cd blank. I here its a pain in the a** to learn the ropes on that type of ripping though.

I just brought one like 2 weeks ago from NY Broadway and 57th St. I just called them up and they said that they have 44 more in stock. They are discounting the VCR so that is why it is on sale. It's a excellent VCR for the price. 4 head and HiFi. Can't beat that? Going back to get a price adjustment on my purchase.

Meanwhile, here in the South Bay,
CompUSA on El Camino Real in Santa Clara has one open box unit left:
Model # is HRA51U, price is $49.88.
Not $40, but still not bad

Thanks for the post

Went to my local CompUSA. Three on the shelf with stickers that said "clearance-$79.99". I found a CSR and asked him to do a price check -- came back $49.99. Now there are two.

The Model number is HR-A51U. 4 Head stereo.

Thanks.

Does anyone know if the two Portland, Oregon CompUSA stores have this VCR in stock? I would call them but 1) they never answer their phones or put you on hold forever and 2) I don't want the employees to be alerted of this deal and buy all the VCRs for themselves (probably too late).

Please list which Portland CompUSA and how many they had left, thanks!

$49.99 at the CompUSA on BeltLine in Addison, TX. I bought 2 at lunchtime today (one for me, one for dad) and it came to $108 total.

They had about 8-10 left on the floor when I walked out with mine... if you're hunting, try there.

BTW, this is a NICE unit.

You can check the availability on their website. Not real time, but you will have an idea at least.

kaiotes:

It was a cold, overcast morning in Santa Clara. It did not look like Spring:
more foreboding, a foreshadowing of something. Something not quite right in the Force.

Armed with intelligence gleaned from an early morning perusal
of these elite pages, I arrived at the scene before the doors opened:
I was the first customer in the store.

When I entered 3 of the CUSA drones were playing a display video game
with accompaniments of loud cheers and laughter.

I looked around, found a drone w/ an IQ above room temp, and inquired about
the prize:

He steered me to 2 units, one, the aforementioned open box.
The other one, the unsullied one, left the store with me.

Maybe the Blossom Hill Store has some?

I'll try to stop there on the way home: if I do, I'll post an update for all the faithful
tonight.

Yours

Phil

<< I'll put my JVC Super VHS up against a DVD player....you will not see any difference in playback quality. >>

I've got a number of S-VHS and Hi-8 decks, including the JVC unit from the fine folks at (RIP) accompany.com, and the best S-VHS deck I own is a Sony SLVR-1000. Given the choice of watching a movie recorded on S-VHS (there were a handful of releases made in this format) on that machine, versus watching a DVD via Component out, even a bottom of the line Toshiba, I'd take the DVD any day - - better picture quality and much better audio quality. If you'd like to stop by and watch on a better system, you can check out the Panasonic DVD-H1000 with its progressive scan and if you can't tell the difference between that and S-VHS (or S-video output from a non-progressive DVD) I'd be happy to bring you to a very good eye doctor.

Don't get me wrong - S-VHS machines are great and they serve their purpose, and the resolution far exceeds normal video - but they are not near the quality of a DVD, especially in the right setup. The only reason I haven't picked up a Terapin recorder for my home setup is that the darn thing only does VCD quality which is so far below S-Video that I can't stand to watch it.
