Are the Hercules cards any good? Should I get an ATI one? I haven't bought a vid card since the Voodoo3 3000, which is still sitting in my machine. I have to go to Fry's anyway, so I'm going to pick one up and see how it is.

The Anaheim Frys had a bunch when I went this morning. Also mwave.com has the ATI Radeon 8500LE game pack 128mb ddr for 105.00. I think that comes with Counterstrike or something.

The hercules 8500le I got from frys has a DVI output. Which is better than Ati's own 8500le which has no DVI output that is currently being sold at mwave.com. If you really want an ATI made radeon 8500le look for the one with DVI out. Some model of 8500le has it some don't. Which is confusing. :p If you care about dual monitor setup or flat panel monitor get the one with DVI out.

You can't have 2 VGA monitors hooked up to an 8500LE at once. There's only one RAMDAC.

But I agree having the DVI is key.

You can do crt/crt, but you'll need a dvi-to-crt adapter. Which the hercules prophet card didn't include in the box.

No you can't do crt/crt even with a dvi adapter. The adapter will only work if you have 2 RAMDACS. To save money, the 8500LEs only have 1. That's why they didn't include a dvi adapter.

Actually, just to confuse everyone, some le's come with the ramdac and some don't. It's the small chip just left and up of the main radeon if you look at the card with bracket on the left side. The hercules don't, some ati do, gigabyte's do.

I wouldn't consider this along with a Geforce4. To me, it's a GF3 competitor.

I didn't realize there was such a big difference. I think I'll spend the extra $56 to get a TI4200 128mb from newegg.

Might as well add my 2 cents to this. Good card, needs better drivers. Nothing like playing Neverwinter Nights with a constant flicker anytime you put your cursor inside your map.

Anyway, at the price, it's an awesome buy at the moment. Hands down, it beats anything else in the price range or anything Nvidia has in the range. $60 more is not in the range I'm talking about.

Good card.....needs the drivers to mature more, which they hopefully will now that they are integrated and the 9x00 series is upon us.

that's because the seal is broken and nobody else would even think about buying it without the stupid "checked and assured" sticker
