Over the air digital is the best quality signal you can get right now - Virtualy no compression. Even standard def digital looks amazing. The icing on the cake is there is no monthly fee.

The majority of the digital signals in the US (93%) are on the UHF band. Usually upper VHF channels can be picked up with a UHF antenna as well. I have tried several antennas, and have had the best luck with the DB4, a dedicated UHF antenna.

Probably the best antennas availaible for digital reception can be found at: Antennas Direct they are also a favorite of the HD obsessed over at the AVS forum.

An outside installation will usually yeld the best results, but attic installations are often successful as well. Indoor installations are usually more problematic since the signals tend to be line of sight, and being lower to the ground and behind several layers of building materials will often relult in a significantly weaker signal.

Now you will hear stories of people geting great OTA recepetion with a $1.99 rabbit ears in their basement, but most people will have the best results with a UHF antenna up high in their attic or on the roof.

Just to verify, I could use this to output normal cable TV to my 2405FPW via component video, right?

You should be able to. My 2001FP has svideo and composite in.
Component != composite...

Hmmm. Not a single one in my zipcodes for North Carolina but I see a buttload in NYC. Hmmm, I wonder if a ex-gf would be so kind as to pick one up for me...

No sh!t! But my monitor doesn't have component inputs, just composite. Hence my saying it has svideo and composite in.

But yes, the receiver has both composite and component outputs.

I just bought one of these receivers and it looks like the RF port is strictly for an antenna. After the Sox game I'll hook up the cable and see if it'll work anyways.

Yeap, it doesn't. I tried hooking up the normal analog RF cable up to the box and it refused to recognize any channels. I'm returning it ASAP.

🙁

Nobody said anything about the RF port being one for an antenna... 🙁

I finally found one about an hour drive though. Last one display unit. They had the box and remote and cables. They said they just got it in a couple of weeks ago and had only been on the shelf that long. I hope I can get a signal here. I can't wait til football Sunday.

GAH!

I just went to return my receiver and they wouldn't let me. When I bought the receiver, I returned some items, so they gave me the return reciept (which has the original reciept's number on it) but not the original reciept. I didn't realize this until I got to the store, and the guy who worked there refused, even though I tried arguing with him.

Anyways, if anyone wants to buy it off of me, I'll be listing it in FS/FT.

Can I dispute this with my credit card company? (Bank of America)

I got to watch a football game in HDTV. Too bad it was the Browns. 😉 I also got to catch a little of the race. Channel 2 is apparently hard to get as the picture would come in for a few minutes then freeze then the antenna meter came up with 50% or less. I need to adjust my antenna. At least I hope that will take care of it. I hope I don't need a different antenna.

I am very happy with the purchase. The game looked great. The race was awesome I need to get some adjustment done before next weekend.

Yep, I'm really happy with mine in Baltimore. I don't have cable or satellite, just an antenna, so this is a big improvement for me.

I'm getting:
ABC +HD
CBS +HD
NBC +HD
FOX
WB
UPN
Public TV
Public TV HD (Different programming from regular MPT)
2 Weather Stations
One Music Video Station

It looks great on my older Sony 35" Sony with S-Video

For you who get lots of stations, does Antennaweb.org list them there, too? When I put in my info, Antennaweb only shows 3 available HD stations, and two of them are PBS. 🙁

It's funny, I live in the Providence DMA and 3 years ago when I put up my antenna, Antennaweb.org showed all the Boston stations but now that the Providence RI stations are all on the air, none of the Boston channels show up but I receive all of them perfectly. I get about 18 channels FTA (Digital HD)

If my non-HDTV signals are terrible, will my HDTV signal strength be just as bad? No one in my neighborhood uses terrestial antennae, everyone uses cable.

Finally got my antenna up last night. I'm able to catch all local channels EXCEPT for Fox 🙁 It's unfortunate that Fox is who broadcasts all the Seahawks games too.

But, looks great, and the remote isn't that bad.

I noticed the HDMI output doesn't seem to use HDCP. Hmmm, nice. 🙂 I can use this on any monitor.

Other ways to get it
In store:
Available at most stores, find it near you (in blue text). Enter your zip code.

I found one at a local RS. It is a great unit. I am using an indoor antennae and only get 4 stations, so I'm gonna have an external antennae installed. 😀 What a great deal 🙂

OMG i got so lucky with this.

I asked my friend at radioshack to hold one for me a few weeks ago, but iv been so busy i didnt get a chance to pick it up, i walk in today and the one dude tells me they sold out last week. I told him to call my friend.

He goes to the back to call, comes out with the receiver and rings it up for me with his employee discount 🙂

i have the 2405fpw monitor and it has 2 DVI inputs on the monitor.

I would love to use this as my xmas present to myself if this would work.

If i get the reciever and a antenna and hook up the hdmi to DVI cable from the reciever to the monitor in the 2nd DVI port would it accept the signal? and i could watch HD on my monitor?

Yeah, first there is only one DVI port.

Secondly, it would probably be easier to just hook it up via component.
