Thanks for the deal!
I bought one of these yesterday. It works quite well down-converting for allowing an old NTSC TV set to tune in HD Stations. I installed it at my Grandmothers house. It gets about 6 stations in the NYC area just using a cheap RCA Indoor Antenna.

OK, I have a friend who is offering me one of these that he picked up a couple of weeks ago. I am unsure if I need it or not.

I am getting a dish netowrk 811 HD receiver on Friday, which has a buiilt-in off-air antenna. Is there an advantage to having something like this? Is this only for local stations or is there something else I can do with this thing? I am completely new to HDTV, and pretty clueless still.

Thanks...

With a 811 receiver, you do not need one of these since it is built into the 811.

Is your friend looking to get rid of the rcvr?

I bought what was probably one of the last boxed units in Baltimore. I went to one store and they called around until they found one in a box for me. Most stores had the display unit, which was missing its remote.

He returned it. It's in stock in zip code 90505.

I live INSIDE a city that has 8 digital channels and I had to buy a radioshack mast mounted UHF antenna and mounted it in my attic.

Edit: I need an Dishnetwork 811, any deals on that?

I called and told the Dish Network retention department that the cable company was offering me free install and all the free equipment that I needed so I would need to cancel. Since I have been a "valued customer" for 7 months they are coming to install my free 811 on Friday, dropped the install from $99 to $50, gave me a $30 credit on my next bill, and are waiving the $9.99/month HDTV fee for the next 6 months.

Wow. After reading this yesterday, I checked local Radio Shack stock online (Twin Cities, MN) and found a few places. Stock is thin to be sure but there a number around. Make sure to call first before going in, and to make sure it's not a single unit on hand from a return or something.

Love it! About $96 out the door. Got it home, hooked it up to an ancient powered UHF antenna that I'd bought for receiving Simpsons off of Fox way back when, couldn't believe I still had that thing. Wasn't but a couple minutes afterwards that I tuned in some local stations. Watched Monday Night Football in wide-screen high def last night - after about 4 years of having an HDTV, I got to see my first HD signal in my living room.

I can't compare this thing to anything else, but for me it's the best $96 spent in recent memory, no doubt.

By the way, for anyone wondering - www.antennaweb.org will give you an idea of what direction and distance your signals come from.

Also - you need a UHF antenna for almost all HD signals - not VHF. If you have a combo (rabbit ears and the loop) you may be OK, if you have rabbit ears *only* then you won't be able to pick much or anything up. Rabbit ears are VHF, they don't help with this.

Seems clear to me. Having "a VHF HDTV signal" certainly qualifies as almost all UHF, no?

Got mine, and was practically drooling in anticipation for my Silver Sensor to arrive from Amazon. Finally got home tonight and hooked it up.

Well, I get 3 channels. All 3 are PBS. 1 is the digital broadcast, but not HD content. The 2nd is considered the 'learning' channel, as it features in-class content. The 3rd is in fact all HD programming, but it's your typical PBS broadcasting. Tonight they had some symphony concert, followed by a who knows how long feature on the OJ Simpson case and the verdicts effects and reaction on our country.

woo fvcking who. :(

I may just have to sell my receiver and antenna, as it would appear I live too far out to get anything really worth watching :( (unless of course I mount a mile-high antenna with a 1.8 jiggawatt amplifier to my roof)

Not always, I have a VHF HDTV signal in my area and others do too. Just a FYI.

Remember to select the "Show Digital Stations Only" button on the antennaweb site to show the digital stations in UHF.

Also, because stations and networks complained about losing years of branding and marketing, the "channel" column is a virtually mapped channel number which is reported by the receiver. The actual UHF channel assignment is the channel number in the "frequency assignment" column. So the station I work for displays "6.1" on the receiver with the actual broadcast channel being on UHF 18. Some people might be fooled into thinking that when they see "6.1" on the display, they are looking at a VHF channel. They are not - they are tuned into channel 18.

Channel 13 is NOT UHF, it remaps to 12.1. There are also some peeps that have channel 8 in thier area. I am just letting you know not to make a blanket statement.

Just to verify, I could use this to output normal cable TV to my 2405FPW via component video, right?

I know what my 2405 has for inputs, I'm wondering how the box in question outputs signals. I just want to watch normal cable tv on my monitor...

Silver sensor and this box didn't give me much success in my area. Looks like I'll have to bet an outdoor antenna. Getting sporadic signals...freezes at times, picks up a lot of channels but non are steady. Otherwise, box is great. Now just need to figure out a good and cheap external antenna that will pick up from all directions. Wonder if I can just take the coax from my old satellite and see if that will work? Any guesses?

How about mounting an antenna on your existing dish mount using THIS adapter?
