gu3 - I can see why you are thinking that but I believe you are reading into it wrong. Looks to me like its just simply a promotion promoting the product because it works well in XP. There are 2 ways to get to the rebate coupon , one has the XP stuff on the top and the other has no mention of XP.

Yes I do agree with you, tekkjunkie.

The rebate form doesn't mention anything about special XP version of WinTV.
Just said WinTV works fine with XP. There is no special XP version of WinTV appear on the list of Hauppauge's product list.
Beside when click on the link "Where to buy" it leads to the retailer companies which has OfficeMax in that list and then click on the OfficeMax link, it just leads you to the OfficeMax website. So there is nothing relate to XP version of WinTV.
I think you right tekkijunkie, they just want to promote the WinTV, since it was well designed and worked with event XP, just update the driver and software.

The SKU is: 785428004013

Also all the newer boxes come with the remote control. Mine does ;)

I am using it with Cyberlinks's PowerVCR II and it is working great as a Digital Video Recorder!

For watching TV. Use Dscaler.

Just don't forget to use the WDM driver from Hauppauge's website.

I purchased one of these today. I'm not trying to crap on thread, just pointing out some pitfalls. I would have been really mad if I'd had to spend any more than $20 for this crappy outdated card.

First, this is a bt848 based card. It's not a bt878 card, which has (slight but noticeable) better video quality.

If you run Win2K and third party PVR app be careful. For whatever reason Cyberlink's PowerVCR II does not *record* with this card. It complains about not being able to render a preview filter graph with Hauppauge WDM driver.

So I tried the gnu btwin WDM driver from Sourceforge, you can record w/ this driver, but you can't view whatever you're recording at the same time (I get a green overlay while recording).

I have a I/O Magic PC PVR I purchased earlier for $40. Works much better out of the box.

This really is a case of "you get what you pay for."

BTW, the OM I went to also had a few WinTV Theater(495 model) on sale for $79. I'm not sure if there is a rebate for these...

None to be found in the Seattle - Tacoma area. If anyone can get one of these for me I can Paypal you for it and shipping.

Actually, that's not quite true.

I was at a Puget Sound area OM today, saw 11 of these in the clearance section, and picked one up since I had my copy of the $10 off $50 coupon from the circular handy.

They also had the WinTV Theatre for $79, but I've been told it's a little more difficult to capture with.

The card I picked up has a bt878 chip...

Nice card especially for $20. Works great in Windows 98. I had a few problems getting the wintv2000 software running on XP (problems with overlay), but there were a few workarounds posted on their online faqs that did the trick. DScaler worked without a hitch and made the picture look a little better. It's definetely a great buy.

Would this be a good way to play my Gamecube in my dorm room on my 19" monitor if the TV was in use? (assuming I paid $5-10 to get the necessary RCA-to-minijack and other such converters)

Does this place the TV picture in a scalable window, or is this one of the units that either is full-screen or not on at all?

Here's a preview of something I captured: preview.avi
You'll need divx 5 from here: divx.com

This is my first ever capture, so my settings may not be perfect. Also keep in mind cable reception and compression may have affected the quality. It should give you an idea of what you can expect from this card.

I used the sourceforge wdm drivers and software for the capture. Then I used VirtualDub to compress via DivX and mp3 codecs to make the file smaller.

It's scalable. Just drag the resize bars to whatever you like.

TJ69,

Did yours come w/ remote in box or is it one one those you got to get in the mail? If it isn't too much trouble, what's the date that's silkscreened on printed circuit board (back of card, only solder pts, no components)?

Thanks

Just got email from TechSupport of Hauppage, they said the WinTV which has NTSC mask on it supports only NTSC system, even the Software allows user to change the TV system PAL/ SECAM but it won't work.

For the some search I did: ATI TV wonder PCI and Pinnacle PCTV are support NTSC/PAL.
I gona return the card to OM tomorrow, because I needs both TV system.

BTW, mine is bt848, no remote but has sticker to it by mail.

I couldn't find any date on the back of the board. On the front, there is a sticker with a copyright date of 1998. It did not come with a remote, just a mail away sticker. It also came with windows 95 and 98 manual inserts.

I have Pinnacle and though the software lets you change the sytem from NTSC to PAL, it still does not play PAL feed from my VCR..

TJ69,

I think you lucked out on bt878. Your description above sounds exactly like mine (date on pcb is same). My box doesn't have surfer on box like on Hauppauge's site, it states "New! with FM radio!" in a yellow star....

Thanks.

Hi soma,

I have a studio PCTV Pro card, on the PCB masked all supported TV systems, NTSC PAL B/D....,SECAM.
I have not tried it yet, but I believe it does support.
Is you VCR PAL system?
if not, I mean if you just put a PAL tape in to NTSC VCR and play it, you get the NTSC signal not PAL and you could not see anything.

I play PAL system you need PAL or multisystem VCR that would give you the PAL signal and also you need a PAL/Multisystem TV if you want to see it on TV.

I just purchased this card at Officemax yesterday with the $10 off coupon found on the OM website. This is an older model so I have to send in the attached coupon along with a copy of the receipt and the UPC code from the box for the remote. The problem is that Hauppuaghe?s $20 rebate on the card also requires the UPC code but there there is only one UPC code on the box.

I called Hauppuaghe?s sales help line (they don?t have a customer service number) and the person I spoke with indicated that the current remote probably wouldn?t work with the older version of the card and suggested I return the card to OM and buy the card from their website, which includes a remote, for $99.

1) Does the remote that one receives by mailing in the coupon work with the older 401 cards?

2) Anyone have any ideas how to get the mail in remote and $20 rebate with only one UPC code?

Update:

I just received a response from Hauppaughe telling me to send everything in one enevelope and they will take care of it.

This was also in the email response: "By the way the remote will not work in XP or 2000".

Can someone confirm this.

Does a stand alone IR sensor also come with the remote or is this an RF remote?
