One good L lens is more than "half the price"
A collection would be 30K easily.
This is medium format, so don't even insult it and compare to disposable cams like 1ds 3.

I actually had my headshots taken by one of these... The photographer complained almost the entire session about how he hated the camera, and we had to pause a few times so he could get the connections to work. Just a little side note though 🙂.

I don't know why most of these posts sound like joke posts.. It's a very expensive camera, Google H3DII-31 and you'll see the MSRP is really around $27k. This is a very good deal for those who are interested and actually use such high end equipment. Thanks OP.

because they think that anything bigger than a 35mm frame is a joke. In fact, people are almost considering a FF camera a joke right now! I mean, why get a FF when you can get the "extra focal length" with a cropped sensor right? 🙂

Anyway, anyone who knows anything about serious photography knows that the larger the sensor, the better it is. More dynamic range, better per pixel sharpness, hell you can't even plug a memory card into one of these! These are shot straight onto the PC. All *serious* pros use at least a medium format with a digital back. Don't forget, hasselblad lens suppliers = Zeiss.

More likely that it's a deal that just doesn't compute to them. Only professional photographers would consider buying a camera like this, and most of the time when you're in the market for one, you're not waiting for a "Hot Deal" - when you need it, you maybe call 2-3 vendors and buy it.

It IS a hot deal, it's just not for everyone.

There's no reason for you guys to get all snobby about the "joke posts" here. I'm sure "anyone who knows anything about cameras" and is looking for a $27k camera knows exactly what five or so merchants sell it and for how much, and is going to charge it to his business, which in turn will write it off their taxes and slightly raise their rates for a while to pay it off. It's not something they are hunting around deal sites to find, and when all is said and done, I doubt the cost of a camera like this is a major issue to them (the lenses and other equipment, that's another story). But it's still amusing to see it posted here alongside the "Dell 10 days of deals" posts.

The funny part is in just a few years every other consumer digital camera will probably have this in a $199.00 consumer version the way megapixels keep going.

I havent tracked it but I would guess it doubles every other year as mainstream.
About 2 years ago I would guess 6megapixel was the norm now its not uncommon to see 12 mega pixel. So in 2 years 24 mega pixel? 3 years 36 Mega Pixel? Sure why not.

Either way were going to need Class 30 SDHC cards sooner than later.

The number of pixels on this camera is almost certainly the least of the items that get the price up there. (The quality of those pixels is another matter.) I doubt that a consumer level camera will have anywhere near this number of pixels in the next few years - there's no need for it, for one thing. But I can guarantee that no consumer camera will have any of the other attributes, not least the glass (the included lens by itself is around $2K...)

Here's a resized version of a shot I took with a 4x5 camera and a Phase1 P20 back...colors look like shit on the web.

120 and 4x5 digital photography is incredible...I'm glad to see price drops like this one on the H3D. I've never used an H-series 'Blad, but I've dabbled in digital with a 'Blad 503 and loved it.


I regularly shoot with a 5D or 1DmkIIn. I hate tiny sensors 😉

I wouldn't count on it that quickly. As beergeek mentioned, there' simply no need for it in a consumer camera. Honestly, MOST people won't/don't use 8-10 megapixels 99% of the time. They can use improved sensitivity in those pixels though, so I hope manufacturers switch to a quality-improvement mode for a cycle or three in consumer/prosumer products.

That said, I'll agree with beergeek again and say that it's not just the pixel quantity that makes this an expensive camera.

Megapixels are sheer marketing hype. Very few people need more than 4-5 mexapixels. My camera has 8, and that's way more than I need. Good lenses, they will never be cheap, but will be worth every penny, as opposed to useless extra megapixels. I reckon this will turn out like horsepower in cars did, eventually, enough is enough and the buying public begins to realize that quality (and safety, in cars) is more important than quantity.

I've actually heard, off-record, that this camera has problems. And not just connection problems...it's a tough situation to be in because it's such a high-priced camera, which means so few people use it. The only user community is quite small so you don't hear about the issues nearly as much, which is unfortunate. It IS nice to have the web now as a research tool...going a little bit off-topic here, I've been looking into a Honda Element (the ugly box cars) as my next car and have discovered that there have been 4 or 5 people whose side air bags have deployed while driving on accident. I'm sure there have been others, but the only user group isn't that big so that problems don't get heard about that much, but to have even 5 users with a problem that serious is a major issue. The dealers write it off as a quirk and make the customer pay for the replacement half the time...if there were more owners online, I think it would be a larger issue and one that would be fixed ASAP. I wonder if Hassleblad does the same thing, or if they're good about fixing the issues no one ever talks about...

What L lens are you talking about? I just got a 24-70 2.8 L for $1200. Adorama has the 400 2.8L IS for $6800 still less than than 1/2 of the ~$18,000 price tag of this Hasselblad.

While I know that medium format cameras are in a completely different league than the 1Ds III, I'd hardly consider them disposable.

1dsIII + 800 f/5.6 is getting damn near it.
