I bought a MS intelli Explorer in april and it lasted me 6 weeks, before it all of a sudden died on me, the new one has been working alright but these mice are not as good as people tend to think they are.

I asked a Rep about that. He said it was a mistake. The more expensive one (With the IMXXX part #) is referencing a product not stocked by Staples, but rather by Ingram Micro, their distributor. (Note, also, that one takes 3-5 days). The rep said that it's common to have two products like that in the database, though generally only one will show up at a time. So, for instance, when they run out of the in-stock mouse, they'd begin selling the one on order from Ingram Micro.

I ordered the cheaper one, and it's a bonafide Intellimouse Explorer, I promise. And so far as I know, there's only one version of this mouse. (It can be used either Ps/2 or USB, by the way.)

OK I went down to the CompUSA and here's what I found:

MS IntelliEye with the two buttons (one on either side) in addition to the primary buttons + scrollwheel... marked at 49.99 but scans at 39.99

So this is just as good as the staples deal, except you dont have to wait for shipping :)

I bought one :)

Just wondering, anybody like the plain old Microsoft Intellimouse, not the Explorer.
The Explorer, yes it's wonderful I know, but I hear it has a cheap feel to it. The regular one seems to be a bit heavier. Are the two exactly alike physically? Come to think of it, what is the difference between the two besides the $10 price tag and the two thumb buttons?

The one I bought is shown here at microsoft's site. IMO, I like it better than the explorer mainly because i'll be using it for games too :)

Is there a better deal on this one than what I just paid? Its still shrinkwrapped :)

Edit: This has two buttons for "back" and "forward" control in the IE. However, these buttons are placed on either side of the mouse, as opposed to the same side as in the Intellimouse Explorer... (its the placement of these buttons that makes it better for games)

I have used the intellimouse optical several times, and everytime I do my hand starts to cramp up. I use a Logitech Mouseman Wheel optical at work for about 8-9 hours a day and my hand never hurts. I Like the contoured design that the explorer and mouseman have. I am right handed though so those 2 are options for me.
That makes me wonder. How come you never hear about the southpaws complaining or suing MS and logitech for not making a lefty version.

Javeed: I disagree. I have both mice, and having the buttons accessible by your thumb on the left side is far easier than trying to use your middle finger or ring finger to press the botton on the far right side of the Optical version. Try it... I think you'll agree.

As to "what's the difference": There really is no internal hardware difference. Each of my mice came with different versions of the driver, but I notice that I can flip between the drivers (for instance, on my IntelliExplorer computer I can select "IntelliMouse Optical") and not have any difference int he way the mouse behaves.

The Explorer definitely does NOT feel smaller and cheaper than the Optical, as someone suggested. The Explorer is definitely larger, and slightly heavier, though I think they both weigh about exactly the same.

So, what are you paying the extra for? Largely, styling. My guess is Microsoft will phase out the Optical in favor of the Explorer, if they haven't started doing so already.

(Also, for purely silly reasons, the explorer looks much, much cooler in its metallic grey...)

And Javeed: You still could've saved $10 by getting the Optical from Staples. It's $49.95 (add paperclips to get over $50). With discount, it's $29.95, and it's in stock for free next-day delivery. Yeah, you'd still be "waiting" for shipping, but only 24 hours.

D0h! Thanks a huge bunch for the help everyone :)

OK Plan of action:
Return intellimouse optical
Purchase intellimouse explorer

And, like someone else said, this forum's like crack! Every time I refresh the main page for "one more hit"!

Edit: Just ordered one from Staples :) Gotta keep dat receipt for CompUSA :)

I said "just one more deal" about $2500 ago. What the hell does anyone need with three MP3 players anyway?! I wish I knew.

csaddict, I have the Logitech contoured mouse right now, the older wireless version. Is the optical one exactly the same size. I like the contoured one but i find my pinky finger doesn't really sit right so I was looking into a slightly larger mouse.

I believe it is the same size. When I hold it my pinky and wrist rest on the desk so I must hold it different than you do.

I bought 4 of these mouses october last year when VA was around. Gave 2 away as gifts dont know how they are doing now. However my brother and I both used them intensively. After about 6 month. The mouse started to experience problems. Lights goes on and off. Sometimes it would just stop working. Called MS waited a month for 2 replacements. Now after another 4 month, the replacement mouse is experiencing the same problem. :-( I am just about to call MS to asking about if they can replace this one again. They do have lifetime warranty right?

I wanted to switch to other mouses since these gave me bad experiences. However
I am hooked on those 2 thumb buttons. :-( I am so awkward without them surfing the net now. :-( Is there any other mouse that have the same thumb buttons?

After I saw this deal I hopped right on :) I read a review on amazon.com about some guy being able to palm a basketball but the mouse was too big for him. He was apparently full of crap. I used one at OfficeDepot this weekend and it felt just fine, my hand was no where near dwarfed by the mouse. Can't wait to get it... TOMMORROW! :)

Price Match HERE at $48.00 + $4.00 shipping= $52.00 then do the coupon. I highly recommend buying a program called copernic, it has the ability to search hardware sites to find the lowest price offered at the common places most of us price match at. worth a look. They offer a freeware version thats limited, but can give you the general feel of how it works.

I had the same problems I called MS and they sent me a new one in like two days. I got to keep my old broken one too. This mouse is great but it sucks that they break after a while. Many of my friends have had the same problems. I will try to get the number.

racerx: Why did the Staples CSR pick $4 for the shipping on the price match? That's the price for next-day shipping from that retailer?
