!HOT! Gameboy Advance SP @ KMart 5 days early!

Five days early! No pre-order, no inflated price! Walked in to Kmart in Philly (Gallery) and they had a stack of them! It was in the glass case at the "front" of the gizmo section.

Cheers!

seems kinda like a scam to inflate the price of the gba units back to their higher price to me.. they should have got it right the first time

Original ship date from N was to be the 24th. N is notorius for actually shipping ON the ship date (imagine that)...

The lighted screen is worth the money. While a GBA with an Afterburner is nice, most people don't want to do the work, plus the extra cost for the unit... And the size of the GBA SP is so cool.

Excellent Catch!

Picked one up for $99.99. The kmart guy said the Nintendo rep was in yesterday and gave them the thumbs up to start selling them today (March 20th). From the sound of it, all kmarts should have them for sell today, but as always, YMMV.

w00t!

After playing with it for a while, I have a few remarks:

The lighted screen kicks butt. It is 100 times better than the old screen.

The directional buttons are kinda recessed into the unit, making them harder to push sometimes. Not a big deal, but it may get annoying to some people.

The thing is lightweight. I took it out of the box, and it you can barely feel it in your hand.

Overall, I would recommend it. It was almost a must for me to get one, since I lost my GBA and needed a replacement.

Best buy broke the release date, so Electronics Boutique is calling those who pre-ordered them and letting them pick em up (on a first-ordered, first serve basis). i believe this is nation-wide

<--- awaiting his phone call

Just confirmed it with a friend of mine that's a manager at EB. They've emailed out all the stores to start selling them.

It might be better for you to give them a call.

yes, called twice.

they're calling 24 people per shipment, as that's all they receive (at least at my EB). they call 12 cobalt, 12 platinum (the colors). im #24 on the cobalt list, so i'll probably get mine tomorrow

I stopped by my local Best Buy and they didn't have them out, I asked if they had any they said they had them, but can't sell them yet. I told them that other stores already broke the street date and they called me liar.

you can trade it in and get either $25 or $40 towards the new SP, I can't remember the exact amount though.

Right. Because this is the first time EVER that a electronics company came out with an upgrade on an existing item.

So those you who already got it, how is it compared to the original GBA?

I never got the original GBA because of the poor lighting. I picked up an SP today, and it's awesome 🙂. Form factor is way cooler too. Much less like a toy.

What the hell are you talking about? A new design, backlight built in, rechargeable batteries. So that costs absolutely no additional money over the standard $69.99 GBA? If it's such a scam to you don't buy it

While I agree that these features obviously are contributing to the increased price, I do believe that they should have done a better job the first time. I mean, come on, Nintendo. How many years have you been making Gameboys? And of all of those incarnations, what was the one overwhelming complaint? Could it be lighting? Take some of that R&D money and learn how to make a freaking handheld that you can see. Oh, wait, I guess they finally did. Woo!

Very true, point well made. I've never had a problem playing my GB anywhere though - I find it stupid to play it in the dark anyway. Anywhere I usually play it at has sufficient lighting. And with a new design comes new manufacturing and such - having to reconfigure the circuit board and such for the buttons, etc. To be honest the SP looks pretty damn cool - I hated the GBA with the screen in the middle - just felt funny.
