Building a new system from scratch? Got some $$$? Get the 2400 OEM and a $10 heatsink. Total cost: $100

Short on budget? Want to salvage some PC133 stuff? Get the 1800 Retail [which comes with a HS]. Total cose: $60

And you can't really overclock on this board from what I have seen, so go by your wallet : p

I remember the original K7S5A needing some special tweaked overclockers' bios to sport all the goodies, otherwise it's pretty basic (I think it didn't even have multipliers).

A friend said you can get the combo and refund the K7S5A Pro at original cost (make sure you have a reason), hence getting just the proc for very cheap, or vice versa (but why would you want a K7S5A pro?)

I can't believe how cheap the AMD CPU's are getting. Who knows about the mobo but the prices are right if you need to make a back up box or a system for a basic user.

frys had the bare XP2000+ & ECS K7S5a Pro for $59.99 more than 1 1/2 month ago. All the mb's were returns, so we passed.

Is this a new batch of boards or are they returned returns?

I've been using this mobo for about 6 months or so now. It's great. Super stable and performs just fine.

The problem with this board is that when it released you had a lot of noobs around the board here building there first system with it, and they ran into problems, so the board got a bad rep it didnt deserve.

The problem wasnt the board itself, it was stupid noobs that didn't know what they were doing.

Why is it that Fry's appears to be stuck with only ECS mobos? In the last six months or more, I haven't seen any combo promotion from Frys's with any other mobo.

Probably because they have pallets of these things in their back lot. I mean that literally. That aside... if this is such a disposable box, I guess it would be alright if I did my first case mod with it :D

Standard dimensions of the mobo are 12"x9"... so I guess I could do something like this:

The venus of my dreams

I have built over 20 systems using the Pro and the standard k7s5a boards for my self and othee people. I have had only one that had a problem and that was with the internal time kept loosing about a day in 3 run time.

2 nights ago I purchased a DFI KT400 AD77 Infinity board and used all the same hardware from my k7s5a. To my surprise the DFI ran 789 points lower score using 3dmark2001. I am taking the DFI back and getting the 2400XP deal! :)

System info used for test on each board:

Corsair PC2700 RAM, XP1800 Palamino, WD 80 GIG 7200 RPM 2 MB cache, Radeon 8500 128 MB, Lite-on 16x10x40, Soundblaster Live (onboard audio disabled on both motherboards), WinXP with all updates installed

The one thing I love about Fry's is when they put this combo on sale they have pallets full of them, not just a couple of units, hot deal with Retail CPU, I am now up to 20 builds with these units, they work great, I tried of the OC bios didn't OC too well. But for a cheap computer can not beat it. Frys' rocks just stay away from the rebadged junk with the white tag, never write a check, and never ask for technical help.

Can someone with the ECS K7S5A Pro check if SpeedFan works with it to vary Fan RPM speeds through software? This freeware utility is totally awesome (displays temp. and voltages and fan RPMs, and allows you to automatically variate the fan speed based on temperatures!), but not all motherboards have the supporting hardware sensors to allow for adjusting fan RPMs through software.

I agree this board is stable, even if it doesn't quite have all the features I would like. I flashed the bios with the HoneyX modded bios. Due to a defect in the PLL, the board is unable to post at 166Mhz FSB, but some people have gotten that high with some software FSB adjusters. Mine runs at 150Mhz without breaking a sweat (of course it is a 1700+B). Just be aware that without a physical mobo mod, voltage and multiplier adjustments are out of the question. :(

:(!

The one on Brokaw/Murphy is the Aztek themed one, right? I never have gotten a TBird-B from them, I once asked the guy who gets the CPU's out of the cage to bring like 10 of them so I can look at them all and pick, all Palomino's that time. I got lucky the next and got a Tbird.

They do FIC AU13 (nForce2 w/3 Firewire, DD5.1, USB2.0) combos pretty often, too. The cheapest combos almost always include ECS boards for either Athlon or P4/Celeron combos.

Look at the price breakdown on this deal from the receipt: $32.72 for the 1800+ boxed retail CPU and $27.27 for the motherboard.
The processor alone normally goes for $59.99 and the motherboard is tagged $49.99. You can always dump the motherboard if you don't want it.

metroplex area fry's are advertising these as well. i might be able to pick one up for someone, but seeing as to how these are ECS boards, i dont want to mess with returns ;) . i always complain that my local frys doesnt have a cool theme, i guess i should be thankful that i have a local frys in the first place...

Well, that depends on how cheap you are...

the Xp2000+ was a Bare CPU. The 1800 in this deal is a Retail that has the stock fan on it that will save you 10-15 dollars because you won't need to buy one. Also since it's retail it comes with 3 year warranty. But I am thinking the 1800 is a better overclocker then the 2000...

1800 runs @ 1533
2000 runs @ 1667

IMHO the diffrent clock speeds won't yield that much of a diffrence so... If you can get it for 59 bucks I would go with the 1800... Tho, I am thinking Fry's is *TRYING* to get rid of these so they won't be stuck with them next month when you can get the same deal on the 2400-2500 barton. That is just my thoughts...

I'd be willing to bet you can get the same MOBO with a 2500 333 FSB barton for 59-69.00 Bare CPU by next month.

If Fry's sells the Barton 2500+ next month for that price, $59-$69, I know a lot of people will be all over that deal including myself. More likely is that they will push a 2400+ / ECS combo for a few months before a 2500+ / ECS one. Let's hope I'm wrong.

The ECS may be a sub-par for a motherboard, but it has onboard sound and built-in LAN, which makes it a pretty good deal.

Anyone know when the Fry's location in Atlanta ( well actually Gwinnet County ) will open ?
