Hot frying pan under cold water = good idea? bad idea?

I'm not a mechanical engineer or physics person but generally hot pan + cold water = thermal shock, which if the pan is some sort of layered design of different metals, coatings, etc, could cause them to separate or crack. Someone with more science background could give you a better answer but if its an expensive pan I wouldn't do it.

any particular reason you have to cool down the pan faster? If you are going to cook a new dish, just wipe it clean with a paper towel or warm water moistened towel

1) Preheat oven as hot as it will go.
2) Bake large rock, preferably size of an alternator, for 5-6 hours
3) Place rock into large tub of ice water.
4) ...
5) PROFIT!

If your face is stuck to the hot frying pan I think it may be a prudent course of action. Don't inhale, though. Just scream out.

I'm glad I could help you there.
