Should be able to if you did that and took your time some have also gone to 1500 grit paper. Mine I did not lap yet and is doing 456x9 with 1.36v bios 1.26 in windows with 48,46 and load 68,66 a bit higher than I like but I want to try this for a week or so and drop back a bit. 3dmark06 scores are 13500-13900 but Vista is slightly lower than Xp with this dual boot setup. My memory is Balistic and I bumped them to 2.30v bios 2.26v windows. They get hot! Where do you live maybe someone is close to swap processors to test?

Well I went last evening and got some 1500 grit at Ace and am a bit suprised. I did not change anything on my settings and took off the cpu cooler and went right to the 1500 grit because my cooler looked good to start. I found it was concaved slightly when starting on a piece of glass. When done and it did not take much it looked even and uniform. I did nothing to the chip. Re-installed using a mix of my 7 diamond and AS5 paste. In the abit guru it went from 37-38c idle to 32-33c much more than I thought. In core temp it went from 48-46 to 40-38 idle and from 68-66 to 60-58 running prime. This is at 456x9 with 1.36v bios 1.26v coretemp. Will do more experimenting tonight. I am memory limited now with my balistic 800 memory running on 2.3v bios 2.26v cpuid 4-5-5-15.
Anyone else see this much difference in lapping?

that seems way to hot as many have said, my mobo just turns off if the CPU gets above 90C

running 445x9 @ 1.36V with the stock cooler i would only hit 80C on my 8400, i put in a ultima 90 in yesterday with 120mm scyth sflex and at the same settings im at 62C load in orthos and prime

have you tried updateing your mobo bios yet? having really high temps at stocks speeds with 2 diff chips makes me thing the mobo is reading something wrong

watch out with that 2.3volts on the Vdimm for long term!!!

Jeesh, that's way too high. Even after putting the bundled unit on, the temps are too high. Frustrating that a high-end mobo like that would cause problems. As others have said, I'd:

1) make certain the HSF is firmly and cleanly installed, without excessive thermal paste
2) Run the system at stock until everything's copacetic
3) I use SpeedFan 4.33 to monitor my temps
4) Pop in another chip if you have one to test furrther. (This is probably the best way to eliminate this as the issue.) If the issue goes away with another chip, RMA that beastie
5) try to clean up cabling as much as possible (that shouldn't be the big issue though)
6) Check to insure the fan on the HSF is working correctly
7) See if you can install a fan controller and try different settings
8) Could be a mobo issue. Swap it out. (I know it's a PITA; I've had to do the same thing before and I hate it after I thought I'd finished a build). Asus is usually solid, but everyone produces lemons sometimes.

Not sure but I do not think 2.3 with 2.26 in cpuid is too high? Rated at 2.2?

I've got 1 of those little hand help Laser Temp guns, and check hotspots etc on my board with it. I am thinking if maybe you have a rental center around you, you could just rent 1 for a coupla hours and use it to test to see what kinda temps you are Actually getting. Ie; edge of the chip, surrounding area, heatsink itself... on and on...
