Hi im new here and Im after some help!!. My cpu is running ridiculously hot, I have tried everything to lower the temp. i have tried both my intel stock cooler and a Scythe Infinity with different amounts of AC mx-2 thermal paste, but i can bearly see a difference.

I also went over the top and lapped it :( really wish i didnt now but oh well iv learnt my lesson, havnt seen a difference

This is really bugging me as i bought this cpu to get to the 4ghz mark.

My setup:

Case- akasa eclipse
PSU - corsair hx 620w

Asus striker II formula with latest bios
e8400
2gb corsair xm2 800mhz 4-4-4-12 1t
2x 8800gts 640mb sli

IIRC, you don't want to use too much thermal paste, as it acts more like an insulator than a conductor if you use too much. You should only use a little glob of it in the center of the chip's IHS, relying on the pressure of attaching the HSF to spread it out over the rest of the IHS. If, after attaching the HSF, the paste spills out over the edge of the IHS, you've used too much.. IIRC.

Yeah a "pea sized" drop should do the trick. Is it always 90 degrees? Is it ever any less or any more? You may have a case of bad temp probes.

No just when i have it on load

idle ranges on 50/60 depending on the room temp and how long its been turned on

and i have tried half a pea, a pea, also a couple of stripes ect as im applying the thermal paste

I water cool mine, my water is Always between 50 to 53f. My 8400 says it is 2 to 3C in Bios, Smart Guardian says 254c in windows..etc.I think it is within the cpu reporting improperly.

Funny thing is, when I adjust the cpu temp UP +15 in bios, SG gives me about 15 to 17c in windows, bios shows the same. Core Temp shows core0= 40c and core1 as 44c under load. Core0 Never moves, and Core1 idles at 31C. So, as you see, not all of these chips report the proper temps. Maybe yours is the same? Try running Orthos with Priority 8 or 9 with nothing else running in the back ground, and see if it errors out right away. That should tell the tale.

You obviously don't have the HSF attached correctly, or the heat pipes are riding up on the Capacitors around the socket area. you may need to get rid of the bayonet locks, and switch to nuts and bolts to attach the HSF, and washers to assure clearance.

Pull the MOBO and look at it, and re-assemble to assure you get contact with the CPU, and no interference with the Capacitors.

yep, your 93C cpu temp is very worrysome. It is one thing to have extreme core temps readings, but if your cpu temp is reading that hot, there is something seriously wrong. Either your heatsink is not making contact with the cpu, or your cpu is hooped. Mind you I had my old E6300 running at 85C for 3 months 24/7 when I had a mis-installed heatsink. But that cpu would still o/c to 533FSB x 7 on my old P5B vanilla board and ran without a hiccup for 18 months. These are pretty tough processors.

Temps are abnormally high in my opinion, not from the mis-installation of the HSF but more likely bad probes, OP what are you idle/load temps at stock clock?

I would normally say don't worry about E8400 temps, but usually the CPU temp is accurate. Something is off, but I can't off more input than has already been suggested. How high is your room temp? Your motherboard temps seems high too.

Well i have taken off the infinity, and put the stock cooler on. Now my idle temp is 53c with a room temp of 18. load still gets in the 80s tho. and this is with no overclock or voltage

Obviously my infinty isnt doing its job properly or it wasnt seated right, even after 3/4 reseats

am i just extremely unlucky to get a hot chip? my e6600 was running at similar temps too

Sounds like something's wrong with the mobo if both your E8400 and E6600 are having similiar temp problems, got a spare board lying around, or a friends board you can borrow to test?

How is the airflow in your system? Does the temp go down to a more reasonable temperature with the case open, lying on it's side?

make sure you bios doesnt have a temp adjustment options. Because if so that could be the cause. I might also try a different bios to make sure. But id assume you know how to apply a heatsink. Possibly however A bad chip. The heat spreader on the Chip Flat? maybe under the HS Intel didnt get good contact?..

The temp does go down with the case open yeah

I do have an aluminion case, and a 120mm antec tri3 fan set on its highest option!

Wow, your cpu is hitting 90C+? That is HOOOTTTTTTT! Something is definitely wrong. It should be around 50-60C at full load. I however don't own a intel setup so I should just keep to myself.

If you were getting 90c with the aftermarket cooler, and 50 with the stock cooler, I'd say something is wrong with your lapping job. Make sure it is perfectly flat, and that it makes good contact with your processor. Also make sure your processor is perfectly flat. Use a piece of glass as your surface for the sandpaper.

thats what i did yeah, flat piece of glass, 400,600,800,1200

couldnt get a perfect scratchless mirroe shine though

Ok, if you're certain its flat then it is probably just bad temp readings. Feel your heatsink by hand after running the PC for a while. Does it feel like 50c or 90c?

If it feels like 50c, then its normal and probably just bad temp readings.
If it feels like 90c, then your CPU is way too hot.
If it feels cold, then your CPU and heatsink haven't got good contact.

You case temp is reading 46C in that pic. If this is accurate, you're running way to warm inside the case. I don't think I usually see MB temps above 40C...but I could be wrong. Is your rear case fan blowing out? Any other case fans?

I don't think he's using case fans. The only fan he's mentioned so far would have needed to be the heatsink fan for the Scythe. Well, either that, or he was running the Scythe fanless.

im running a high speed intake 120mm fan
and an exhaust 120mm fan

when i open the case it doesnt even feel that warm :/

This is dodgy

Why don't you post a picture of your case layout so we can give you some advice to give you better airflow? (since you said that opening your case really helped the temps.)
