Where's the hot deal? Buy a mac.. lol! Buy a Compaq.. even worse.

The drive by itself still runs you MSRP of $995 and the media still isn't too cheap. I heard by the end of the year the media will be under a buck though.. if the drive is under $400 I might think about it... but sorry.. DVD+RW format for me.

How about getting a PC with DVD-ROM for $1000 and spending the rest $2000 on DVD movies?

I'm with you Ian.

This is still the bleeding edge. Not a smart deal at all.

It's interesting to read about. But not smart to go for, for the vast majority of applications. Yet. Seems to me.

A bunch of manufacturers are going to start bundling these drives with their systems for under $2500!! Not a great, but not a bad deal. As for the DVDR media, I don't think they will hit $1 by the end of the year. It took CDRs around 3-4 years to hit $1 each. I would say end of 2002, they will be under $1.

Of course, I can't figure out a good reason to get a DVD-rom drive either.

CD-Rom drives are cheaper, faster and quieter. They also work better as a source drive for CD copying onto a CD-RW drive.

Personally, I'd rather watch DVD's on my big screen TV, mondo surround sound system, and Apex all regions, defeat copy protection, DVD player. The Apex allows me to max S-video VHS tape recordings as well, defeating macrovision. I've done that a number of times and the quality is excellent. Not quite as good as the original, but close.

Heres a couple of details, although DVD R can be played back in standard DVD players you will have a very difficult time copying DVD movies. First of all the DVD R only holds 4.7gb which is less than a lot of DVD movies. Also because of the CSS encryption on the disks it wont be possible to do a simple "disk copy" unless a clever hacker comes up with a way.

A pair of good shoes make a carpenter's life a lot easier, no matter he is good or not...

Forget the Mac. Try the MPEG-4 codec and rip/encode a DVD to CD. Great to take on plane trips if you don't have a DVD on your laptop.

I was rather impressed with that new Titanium Mac Notebook but then saw the price tag and the fact that the fast processer that comes with won't be able to play some of the games I play (MS Flt Sim 2k, Red Alert 2, etc) nor will it be able to run some of the other software I use today.

I'd consider buying a Mac notebook but *never* a desktop. I just love building and modifying my own machines to settle down to a "sealed" box.

Macs are too expensive. They are certainly doomed to failure in the future and/or stunned growth.

Regadless of anyones bias for or against macs, as of today, the only company offering a DVD-R / CD-R / CD-RW / CD / DVD drive in a machine is Apple. The only other company who is going to bundle this with their machines is Compaq.

Also all fo you are forgetting one HUGH thing. There are ZERO, NONE, NADA good dvd burning / authoring tools for the PC.

DVD blanks are $10.00 Apple branded (less than have of buy.com's lowest DVD-R price of $26.00).

In the next couple of months however, this deal may change, as with ALL Deals.

Just waiting for dual layer dvd-r's, now that would be worth something. Single layer is pathetic.

yes, it makes perfect sense that Apple would be the first large PC OEM to offer DVD-ram drives.

They make no economic sense right now in the vast majority of applications. Including at the Mac price. But that has often not stopped Apple before. Or a sizeable number of Apple buyers.

The reason I have never chosen Apple has zero to do with prejudice. And everything to do with the fact that they offer way less bang for the buck, and way less software in the areas I am interested in. In fact, in almost all of Apple's traditional software application strengths, PC's now ofter more powerful and cost effective solutions.

E.g. Photoshop. Digital film editing. Even things like CAD (which I have no interest in myself.)

CD-Roms faster????

I think not.. I know I read something and the 2X (for example) rating on a CD-Rom doesn't equal what 2X DVD-Rom is.... someone check me, but I do believe I am correct...

IRV9999 you may be correct under Windows, but on my PC running a free unix of some sort mkisofs is strait forward and easy to use. I've even make MacOS type ones before.

AFAIK, right. Since 2x, etc., are relative measures, the 2x rating on a CD is 2x relative to the data extraction rate from a CD when the CD is playing at its normal speed (more or less - this is a dumbed down explanatin, but should work fine). Since DVDs are encoded with more information, they also read at a faster rate...

I'll see if I can find some stats on this, but hopefully it makes sense as is.

Pioneer will introduce a DVD-R within a couple months for under $1000.00.
Some Compaq Model 7000.
