wouldn't the 500m for under $800 be a pretty good deal too? It'd be a trade off really...smaller laptop, better battery life, but only 256mb memory and 20gb hard drive. I'm sure the 1.3 Pentium-M can perform nearly as well.

How do you know this is NOT the P4-M?

just check dell's site. When they just say Pentium 4, it's not the mobile. For better models like the 8xxx, it actually says pentium 4 mobile...etc AND it shows the P4-m symbol, not just the regular old P4 symbol.

Only the most naive person in the world would think they could manage to use a desktop processor in a laptop. It's a Pentium IV M

Hmm ... I must be the most naive person in the world then, cause I think that this is the desktop processor as well. But oh wait, duuuma is supposed to be the most naive person in the world, and thus we arrive at a contradiction.

Ken2001,

I will quote myself from another post:::::

(begin quote)

LOVE the people like jbwhite99 who KEEP thread-crapping these deals because it is NOT a mobile chip and making the assertion that that (in and of itself) equals low battery life.

PLZ remember that we all have a right to an opinion but INFORMED ones are the more desired and appreciated ones....

See here

..specifically "it requires as much as 0.55Volts less power it will give you a little better battery life"

AND

here

...specifically "With its powerful 14.8V, 6,450mAh battery, the Inspiron 1100 had little trouble clobbering the competition in battery life. The Inspiron 1100's four-hour score is the longest battery life we've seen in a Celeron-based system, and it even bested a couple of Pentium M systems--the new battery-life champs. With the Dell Inspiron 1100, you'll be able to work unplugged without eyeing the power meter every 15 minutes. "

(end quote)

I think you are making too much of the mobile/not mobile chip IMHO

ANd the linked review/article would suggest I am right.

i dont know if that's sarcastic or not :p but in all cases of seriousness the 5100 uses the desktop P4 CPU, it doesn't come w/ speedstep technology, and they wanted to use it because it was "power hungry"

Performance & battery life

The 2.8GHz Inspiron 5100 showed impressive speed in our performance tests, while battery life was reasonable considering the power of this system?s desktop CPU.

The Inspiron 5100 delivered record-breaking scores of 59.5 and 42.4 respectively under the application-based Business Winstone 2001 and Content Creation Winstone 2002 tests, beating Compaq?s workstation-class 2.2GHz Evo 800w by a clear margin.

The system performed pretty well in our battery life tests, lasting for 2 hours 38 minutes under BatteryMark 4.01 and 2 hours 42 minutes under MobileMark 2002. The Inspiron 5100's hefty 6,450mAh battery obviously has its work cut out when handling a high-speed 2.8GHz processor and a 15in. display, but anything over 2.5 hours isn't bad at all.

You guys think the 5100 for $840 is better than the 500m for $800? I think this deal is pretty hot, but I'm not quite sure which one to get...

I am trying to figure out if I can play DVD movies on the TV using
this laptop.

I assume that this depends on the video card. So does anyone know
if the Radeon Mobility 7500 can do a TV-out ? The ati website does
not mention anything about a TV or a video out. So I assume that it cannot
do it.

But if it can, will it do it in both PAL and NTSC ? (I frequently travel to Asia.)

If all of this is a waste of time, can anyone recommend a lappy which can do
both NTSC and PAL video/TV out ?

For anyone who might be looking for the same answer as me, the Radeon 7500
(atleast the OEM version) can only do either PAL/NTSC. Basically, it is not selectable
via software. PAL or NTSC depends on where it is sold, US, Asia etc.

But there are some other video cards out there (nVidia etc) who can manage this.
