The 20% deal ended December 11th... however, it's still a good time to buy because Dell@home is offering $100 off, free CD-RW or DVD-ROM, and free shipping.

ShoNuff you might want to check out Dell's "business" notebooks. They chopped the prices 20% the other day I think because of slow sales. I hear the build quality is much better.

Otherwise Thinkpad's are great too

I am on hold with tech support right now...I have been on hold for 1 hour 15 min. My view had always been that Dell was #1 in support and service, but I was soooo wrong.

The reason for this call is that I finally recieved the replacement harddrive I ordered with Win2K on it for my new I8K. I should mention that this part came in 10 days after Dell promised me I would have it, despite numerous phone calls. So I pop harddrive in, and am now more disappointed than before!!!

The first 3 boots with the new drive the system crashes. The fourth boot the lappy makes it into Win2K, and starts configuring and finding components! This is totally screwed up because Dell was suppossed to install all of the drivers and software before shipping the new drive...(pissed even more now)

So I let the checks run through and then the sacraficial reboot, and NONE of the drivers are correctly installed and NONE of the packaged software. The holding continues...

YIPPIE! A human voice after an hour and 40 min...damn he can't tell what was actually ordered and what was shipping because the last tech left such poor notes on my account. His recommendation is that I go in by hand and install ever 2000 driver.

SO THIS IS WHAT I PAID 3 GRAND FOR!?!?!? To install ever driver even all of the mobo ones with are ALL WRONG myself!!! Screw this...Dell is getting a return no matter what they offer me.

It is really too bad that I could not stick out this horrid build quality and even worse service, because that 20% rebate check would have been nice.(which btw I never was able to get confirmation on) :(

I just spoke to Dell regarding the details of the rebate. I had mistakenly been charged for an extra Xircom Ethernet Card and 2 extra color choices. I called back and they said that amount would be credited back and this would not affect the rebate. I even spoke with a supervisor who gave me her badge number, as she was certain that this change would not affect the rebate. I went ahead with the refund back to my card, thinking that if there was an issue 6 weeks down the line, I could raise hell and bring up the supervisor's name. Should I worry? What should I believe? I have received an initial confirmation that I had qualified for the rebate but I am still waiting on an exact dollar amount.

Also, has anyone called who are still within the 30 days, to get the price of their DVDROM reimbursed since they are giving them for free now? I am wondering if it would work.

Got off the phone with yet another CLUELESS Dell Rep. This is one of the saddest attempts at doing business that I have ever seen. I really hope that Dell Managment is simply ignorant of all of these outrages, rather than letting them occur.

There are so many problems happening with my laptop, as well as other people's, that a return seems neccessary no matter what the price. Cheap junk is still junk.

Does anyone have written proof of when exactly the 30 day return policty starts??? As far as I can tell my 30 starts on the invoice date...even though the warranty didn't start until I received the computer 2 weeks later.

No, your 30 days begins from the date the system is shipped. That IS your invoice date. It might even begin from the date your system was delivered but I'm not sure about that.

Sorry to hear you are having so many problems. With Dell I have found that persistency DOES pay off.

If you're having problems with any reps I suggest you ask to speak to a supervisor, and if they try to tell you there aren't any, don't believe it. Sometimes you have to wait on hold endlessly, but they do eventually come on the line, and it's amazing how much more they're willing to do than the lowly CS and TS reps.
