CAll 1-800-624-9897 options 5. Ask for return authorization number.

Me: Hello i want to get a return authorization for my laptop that i purchased 30 days ago.

Dell: Can you tell me why you want to return it ?

Me: I got an old scsi 2X cdrw that would not work with the Inspiron 8000. I tried everything,new drivers ,settings ..etc.

Dell: Ok i am going to let you speak with our customer satisfaction specialist. Can you hold for about 15 minutes ? If not they can call you back within 24 - 48 hours.

Me: Ok I will just hold.

15 minutes later .....

Specialist: Hello I understand you have problems with your cdrw and the inspiron 8000 ?

Me: Yeah they would not work together. I am a student and i do a lot of computer stuff that i need to write to cd's.

Specialist: I understand, that must be an old CDRW. Well, wht if i give you $300 credit just for you to keep the laptop ? We have this incentive for our customer to prevent computers for coming back. What we do is, we credit $300 to your credit card. FOr return you gonna be responsible for all shippings for any returns.

Me: Well, how about that removable internal 8 X cdrw from Dell ? Do you think we can have that instead of the $300 ?

Specialist: Let me check. Yeah we could do that, that way you can have a working cdrw for your school work.

Me: Hmm sounds good, what about a port replicator ? Can you provide me with the port replicator and the cdrw ?

Specialist: I am sorry we could not do that as we have only a limit of $300 incentive for your particular order. If you want you can have the port replicator and a dell carrying case or anything within $300.

Me: That sounds good. Does this affect my original order number ?

Specialist: No its just like you placing a seperate order. It does not affect anything. I am going to give you a order number for the cdrw. Would you like to charge the order to your current credit card ?

Me: Charge ? wht charge ?

Specialist: Its gonna be $8 shipping charges to get the CDRW to you via UPS ground.

Me: Oh ok, let me just use a different credit card then. THank you so much for working with me on the laptop. I really appreciate it very much.

Specialist: It is my pleasure. We really work hard to make our customer happy. You should get your CDRW by next wednesday via UPS. Whenever you are ready with your credit card.

----------- :) ---------- :) ------------ :) -----------

What can i say ? $500 rebate, $100 off, free dvd drive, Free win2k upgrade and free 8x CDRW. I am keeping my dell I 8000 despite the creaking case :)

1) I do not suggest taking the $300 credit as this might affect your 20% rebate.

2) The customer incentive $$ depends on the value of your order. So results may vary. You may get more than $ 300 or less than $ 300 but still you are sitting on a gold mine.

3) DO IT BEFORE YOUR 30 DAYS MONEY BACK GUARENTEE EXPIRES ! It wont work after 30 DAYS !!!!!!

So glad i got into this DELL deal :)

dx-treme:

hmmmmm!!! I've been planning on doing this... I figured Dell might throw in something to get me to keep the laptop, but it's nice to have a dollar value (even if it's a ballpark).

I appreciate your posting your results.

I'm going to call tomorrow and I'll let everyone know how it goes!

Yep, Dell will bend over backwards to get you to keep the system. Even if they end up losing money on that particular sale, if you ever buy from Dell again, they did their job (keeping the money from you rolling in). Good customer service experience usually leads to repeat customers, which is what Dell wants, even more than new customers.

I want to order Inspiron 8000 Laptop and a 19&quot; P991 or 21&quot; P1110 monitor. I thought I would pay less for the monitor, but actually I was wrong. I have to add $450 for 19&quot; monitor or $760 for 21&quot; monitor. I dont understand my laptop is about $3200, adding an extra monitor would charge me so much. I think Dell should offer me an discount for an extra monitor. Since you guys can have $300 for keeping the laptop, I think if I talk to them I would get a lower price.

I really doubt you'll get a lower price. I think they're prices are extremely to high, too bad you couldn't jack em up for more then $300 :(

Just a reminder - Here's Dell's Customer Resolution Form to return your Dell for full credit.

Remember you have to return it within 30 days of the INVOICE (not shipping) date. So even though your Dell may have shipped 2-3 weeks after ordering it, you only have 30 days from the INVOICE date to return it for full credit.

Here's a link to their Total Satisfaction Return Policy scroll down to the last paragraph.

I'm afraid RossMan has his facts a little mixed up. I just returned a 4100 from home and an Inspiron at work and Dell made it clear in BOTH cases that you have 30 days from the SHIP DATE. And in the case of the Inspiron, since it shipped so close to Christmas, they extended the 30 days a little to cover any possible delay in transit.

DX-Extreme ... how much was the total cost (before rebate) of your Inspiron? I just ordered one, and it came to $2809 before tax and shipping. I just want to find out if I have a little more than $300 coming to me. Hoping to get a 20GB Drive, 20X CDROM and another battery out of this. I didn't get in for the rebate (just ordered on New Years) and I think they over charged me by not applying a couple of promotions anyway (shipping was supposed to be free).

Me: Hi, my laptop's hard drive is really loud, I'd like a replacement.

Dell CSR: Sure, no problem.

Me: Can I get a different model HD?

Dell: No, sorry. We only use one model.

Me: Oh, the fujitsu huh?

Dell: No, IBM Travelstar.

Me: (to myself--huh? I thought they gave me a fujitsu) OK.

Few days later, I get the new HD. As I'm formatting with Win2000, a message appears:
you have 20gb unformatted disk space.

20 Gig?? They just gave me a 20 gig in exchange for my 10 gig noisy POS. woohoo. Thanks, dell.

Well I called them today and the specialist I got would'nt give me a cash incentive. They only offered me 1/2 off anything around 300.00. My laptop is a I8000 that came up to 2200.00. So a cdrw would cost me 164.98. Do'nt know what else I'd take as I have a 2nd battery and enough memory. Dx-treme You must be a lot better talker than I was. She told me take some time and think about it since I still had time for my return.

Also has there been many people that have gotten there second confirmation on the msn rebate? I still have'nt received mine telling me the total of my rebate.

My laptop was shipped on 12/5/2000 and my 30 day expired on 1/5/2001

my total order is around $2600 and my incentive $$ is $300. I believe the higher you paid for the computer the more incentive $$$ you can get

DELL shopping TIPS

1) Order inferior OS (win me, win 98) and then if you are not happy ask for free upgrade to WIN 2000

2) If your new DELL computer not meeting your demand. Ask for returns. Then you will be given incentive in form of $$$ or extra accesorries. Then you decide to keep or not to keep.

ALL MUST BE DONE WITHIN 30 DAYS !

Dead pixel policy: 7 dead pixel and you can get a new laptop.

A good &quot;script&quot;?

How about telling them the truth? If you've got a genuine problem, let them fix it. If you're just scamming, you suck.

While you're at it, why don't you just post some tips on &quot;borrowing&quot; from the collection plate?

Settle down, peeps. Dell has this policy in place to prevent returns, and the cost is factored into what you pay to begin with. MOST companies have policies like this, and they are rarely set in stone ... they're very flexible. If Dell has a percentage they use based on their order of what incentives they can give you to NOT return the machine, it's not costing them anything ... they're HAPPY to do it. This is not stealing, and this is not fraud. The incentive is there to ensure happy customers, and if getting free stuff or a rebate makes for a happy customer, then they did the job.

Frankly, I'm getting this laptop for mobile graphic design work. If it has any more than ONE (much less SEVEN) dead pixel, it's going back. If Windows Millennium is unstable, I'm getting an upgrade. And if I gotta complain a little to get some extras for my laptop (that frankly should have been standard given my cost), then that's what I'll do. No big deal.

When I bought my first Gateway, the production process took longer than they told me. I called to complain, and they upgraded my hard drive and ram before the machine even shipped. THAT's service. (That was also back when the 486 was NEW and Gateway didn't use cheap parts.) Dell just makes you wait for your complimentary upgrades until after you're received the machine, since changing existing orders when they're on the line is a pain.

Um, I think I've ranted quite enough in this thread. Anyway, thanks, DX ... I'm going to give this a shot when my lappy arrives (scheduled for the 16th, but it's not out of pre-production yet).

Well I thought I had a good script. So far they have been to my house to replace the keyboard then they had to replace the touchpad. Which holds the holds the speakers also touchpad works sound did'nt get any better. Also swapped OS. So I had alot to moan about. They have been to my house 2 times and the laptop is only 2 1/2 weeks old. Must have had a bad specialist.

My Invoice Date is 12/11/00 Paid $2319.96 and here's the text from my second MSN email confirmation.
This is a follow up to the confirmation email we sent you earlier. We
have updated our records to include tax and shipping as part of your
order amount. As a result, our records indicate you are qualified to
receive a 20% rebate equaling $463.99 on your total order amount
of $2,319.96 (includes tax and shipping). Remember, rebate maximum
is $500.

I'm on the phone right now trying to get a free cdrw drive shipped as well as win2k.
I'm telling them I've bought tons of Dell laptops in the past and the 8000 seems to be the cheapest feeling model I have ever used. Win me is constantly crashing and causing reboots.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

&quot;This is not stealing, and this is not fraud.&quot;

For you, SuperRob it's rationalization--on top of everything else.

Inventing a story (sorry: writing a &quot;script&quot;) and pretending you're going to return a PC for the sole purpose of squeezing $300 worth of stuff out of Dell is NOT fraud? Come on, give me a break.

You're trying a little too hard to rationalize this one, buddy.

Just got off the phone. See post above.
They offered me $200 cash or $200 off another piece of equipment.

I couldn't make up my mind. I really want the CDRW drive. She said it costs $329.
I argued that thats the retail price not what Dell paid for it and that she should give me the drive and I would be happy.

She said she could only offer $200.

I said I had to think about it and would call back in a couple days.

I guess $200 off isn't bad at all.
System price $2319.96 shipped
MSN -$ 463.99
DELL CSR -$ 200.00
---------
$1655.97
Dell Inspiron 8000 64MB, DVD, ATI Mobility 16MB, 20GB HD, 2nd Lithion Battery
I also installed 128MB from Curcial $80 shipped

I kinda agree with peeps, to an extent. If your computer is totally flawless, then just making up a 'script' to get $$ back could pose some ethical problems. However, if your keyboard is loose, the hard drive sounds like an engine, windows ME constantly freezes, and you have a dead red pixel staring at you in the face, then Dell definitely did something wrong and you have the right to get bitch and moan.

lol, a good script doesn't mean you must lie or scam, it is just a good perparation before you tell them the truth, please relax and stop picky. I understand what Dx-treme said even I am a foreigner with bad English. Good job guys, I really appreciate those guys like Dx-treme and MusashiX can share their experience here :)
<br><br>
<br>

Scam, you may not even know what it means even your English is a way better than me. My whole family included me actually running a plastic manufactory in a asian country, and the biggest customer for our products is Walmart, they send their own inspectors over to evaluate the quality of products, they act really strict and grade all manufactories in Asia (yes, like write exams in school and get grade reports), however, they request high quality, they don't offer high prices, you may not know many products selling in Walmart are hundred to couple hundreds times higher than their costs, like one of our product sell in Walmart is $10us, actually, they buy from us $0.1 or less, it calls scam, they scam from manufactory, they also scam from US residents. If anyone studied economic, you will understand what absolute advantage is, USA is a good example a AA country to other counties. The situation is same as Dell, all their parts are from Asia, the cost is a way cheaper that you cannot imagine, otherwise, how can they make money and having a beautiful earning reports? the net cost of these laptops maybe just $100 or less, of course they spend a lot in ads and services that we don't count, however, I am sure they give you a cdrw for free, they still make money from you.
<br>
<br>
Therefore, groups like anandtech, slimwallet ..etc are not the places for those cheapa$$ to scam company, but a place for people to find out the way to shop more fair without being scammed by those big financial groups(dell, microsoft.....).
<br>
<br>

PS: many people feel Staples is pathetic because we always get product under the cost by using the trick PM+coupon+rebate, but you don't know how much money Staples@canada made, the real guys are pathetic are Canada Customers. I think they are still new comparing with those olddies like OD, and want to get more % in market, so they keep the deals active, and let you guys remember them.

yea yea yea.. I know I know, my English sux.
