What is Travelaxe?
Travelaxe is a free Windows program that you install and run on your own computer that can simultaneously search up to 16 unique travel websites (including Expedia, HotelDiscounts/Hotels.com, AANHotels, Travelswitch and more) as well as hotels directly for hotel pricing and availability.

This is great because hotels have different rates on different websites - this thing searches all the sites and finds the lowest rate including taxes and fees.

Yes I downloaded the software and searched for a room for Super Bowl weekend. The prices vary by $50 to $100 or more for the same hotel!

It worked for me, too. In Vegas, found the cheapest rate for Flamingo was actually from the hotel site itself (even better than the "special rates" from all of the travel sites). Will try for a couple of other cities if I get a chance.

For certain hotels, priceline will be able to get you a better deal. Check out http://www.biddingfortravel.com/ for priceline strategies. For instance, if you look in the Las Vegas area, people have been getting the venetian for $76 to $80 a night.
