yesterday, i got a local staples to pricematch computers4sure.com's price of 269.99 on an e310 - so after tax & 110% pricematch, it ran me $280, plus i get the $50 MIR from toshiba. net cost - $230, with 'instant' shippnig 😀

I don't know about the reliability of the rebates, but TIgerdirect sent me email yesterday listing the e310 for $349 -50IR -50 Tiger MIR -50 Toshiba MIR for $199 AR. I have the email if anyone is interested, PM me.
 
COMP-U-PLUS has the e740 for $438 before rebates. Shipping looks to be $5.99. AMEX BVG?

kinda good for 400mhz X-SCALE, WIFI, 64K screen, Dual slot, replaceable battery...etc.

I have tried the e740 and the Compaq 3955. Personally I like the Compaq better. The screen is larger and a lot brighter, so it is easier to read. The rounded back feels better in your hand. The universal remote feature is a really cool extra. 802.11b is nice, although webpages take a long time to render on Pocket Pc's. The removable battery on the Toshiba can be a problem since it is easy to remove and there is no back up power so you lose all your data.


 
I have the toshiba e740. $599 - $100 PM to BB - $100 Coupon (OfficeDepot) - $50 MIR. I think all those are deals are dead though.

Anyway, in response to epinions and cnets review, I've found the Toshiba e740 a real pleasure to use.

The batteries never fall out on their own. I think the big problem is that people put it into the tiny included slipcase which then has a tendancy to rub the battery release. Even then, the Toshiba has some internal backup that keeps the memory alive for a few minutes, if not at least an hour. I use a differenct case so it never happens to me. I don't like slip cases in general.

Also, the record button which some people complain about, can be remapped to something other than record so that incidental presses (it happens because thats where I put my fingers to hold the sucker), don't throw you into the WinCE version of winrec.exe =).

I'd have to say, I'd prefer to have some sort of external antenna as it takes quite a signal to be able to connect to WAPs. The size of the screen is smaller than IPAQs, and there is some issue playing DiVX at the moment. I heard that ongoing development will solve this problem from project mayo's side. Still, it plays my MP3s, has SimCity and Solitaire, and keeps all my appointments and random notes in order. I enjoy the size and versitility, extra ram, and wireless very much.

I would recommend the purchase if you know you are going to use it as an organizer with the multimedia as a secondary concern. Playback for MPGs and MP3s are good, but storage costs are prohibitive. Also, even if you're into re-encoding like I am, the smaller the bitrate, the more CPU intensive the playback will be. This makes small bitrate movies fairly difficult to watch. I still have hope for DivX, but in the meantime, my CF are filled with MP3s alone.

DogbertFuz, you should be banned from Anandtech for that statement. If you only need an organizer, buy a Palm for $50. Look around, CF is cheap. My kids didn't complain about bit rate when they sat through a whole plane flight watching Harry Potter on my iPaq.

On a side note, how do you play movies/mpeg/avi's? Do I need the divx codec and is there a version for PocketPCs?
 
The $50 rebate at Amazon Amazon/Toshiba $50 rebate doesn't give any details on how to redeem it. Is it done automatically through Amazon? If not...does anyone know if it's possible to use this rebate on an E740 purchased elsewhere?
