It's a myth to think that the Dreamcast didn't sell well. It holds the record for first week, first month, and first year sales. Initially, Sega was saying that they would have to sell 2 million DC's to be a major player, and they have now sold over 6 million.

Their problem was inept management (example: Shenmue had a staff of 80 people working on it! it's impossible to recoup that kind of investment) and the long-term debt that Sega had built up over a number of years (fiasco of the 32X, Saturn, etc.). The DC system also didn't sell very well in Japan, so the major 3rd-party Japanese game houses stayed away for the most part.

I too think that piracy had little to do with the system's demise. If I'm not mistaken, the system was cracked around September of last year, and at that point, the system was essentially dead in the water already. Actually, because of Sega's longterm debt, the DC arguably could never have been a success.

with all those cheap $20 quality games, $59 for DC is really great price.
Too bad the controller suck donkey, is there an adaptor that allow PS controller to be use ?

Just want to make a comment I read about the Saturn, that was one of the best consoles (no I'm not kidding). It had the coolest games if you imported them.

tantos: I would contact your Funcoland and have them price match either their OWN website ($69) or have them call the store here in San Antonio, TX and pricematch that.

If anyone is interested I would be willing to buy one for anyone who is interested here at the stores in San Antonio. We can work out either payment via money order, or PayPal. Let me know if anyone might be interested in this route...

Check out your local Sears store first. According to this thread Sears console clearance some Sears stores are clearing out their consoles for half price. A new (not refurbished like at FuncoLand) DC console with 1 game is $60.

The only Dreamcast consoles that can't read CD-R's were released in Japan, so you have no need to worry about getting a US one.

These units aren't reburbished. They're "previously owned". Both the website and the salesman at Bellevue Square Babbage's said the same thing. Personally, I would prefer a refurb over a used because refurbs are checked out from the inside, and these units are only checked out on the outside. In other words, "you don't know where that finger's been".

Still, I almost picked one up, but they only had one, and it only came with an RF connection (I need S-Video and/or RCA connections...RF sucks from the days of Pong). Software Etc had none. Funcoland might have some in Crossroads, but I doubt I'll go for a no box, no papers, used unit.

Another thing that turned me off was that the website sez 90 day warranty, while the salesman insisted it was 364 (I asked three times to verify...who's telling the truth?). Plus, the store had them for $80...but unless you ask, you won't know it's actually $70, and the extra $10 is for their year-long 10% discount on games deal. Soak? Maybe...

SEGA 32X DID NOT SUCK!!!
i returned my $1200 pc to play the 32x version of doom for $90!!!
NEITHER DID THE SATURN!!!
mass-market gamers today *sigh*

My opinion is that the DC failed because of the poor quality of it's games. I have to say 95% of DC games suck. I myself have 150 DC games and I only play on a handful of them. There are some really terrific DC games such as Code Veronica, NFL 2k1, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Virtua Tennis. But besides those games, there aren't anything else that's remotely fun to play.

The PS has it's share of crappy games but it was successful because it had more really good games such as Metal Gear to balance out the bad ones.

This isn`t the case if you like racing games, playing msr at the mo and it rules!!!Sega GT rocks and still many more games I havn`t got around to playing.

Amen bro! I enjoyed the Sega 32x also. Playing guardian heroes on the Saturn was the best

Guys lets face it. Before knowing that DC has bootleg games, I buy probably 5-6 games a year; knowing DC has bootlegs, I still buy 5-6 games a year, plus 20 bootlegs. I think this holds true for a lot of other people, too. Bootlegs only allowed me to enjoy the system more, but doesn't decrease the amount of licensed games I buy.

If you guys haven't tried it yet, get bleem for the Dreamcast if you like Gran Turismo 2. It's only $6 (depending if you have the PSX GT2 game yet or not) and it makes it look tons better than if you were playing it on the PSX. This little baby is going to help me from wasting my money on a PS2 & GT3 A-spec (at least until it comes down in price).

BTW, if you haven't played 10-player Bomberman, Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force or Guardian Heroes, (just to name a few of the many excellent Saturn games), then you've really missed out.

Durracell, to answer your question, there are still lots of places to get Dreamcast games. Try Toys Backwards R Us, Best Buy, Comp USA, Walmart, EA.com, buy.com, and Amazon, to name a few. You might have slim pickins at the B&M stores, but if you order online, you can usually save yourself a lot of hassle.

I called my babbages B&M (Niles, Il)-they only have new ones for 100. Funcoland.com has a deal for a dreamcast, two controllers and nfl2k all for 87.98

Not bad-the system is used I believe.

anyone know how respectable funcoland's used systems are?

sig.

Bump for a sweet deal. I love my DC- bought it when the price went down, everything else has been cheap. 😉

How about Skies of Arcadia for a really good DC game?

I will get a DC if Bleem will official release bleemcast. The DC is weet considering with an emulator it can run a PSX game better than the sony console.. atleast prettier, but than the psx is an old pos... oh just my 2cents
