Wow - Racetrac at Park Lane and Greenville in the "slums" of N. Dallas is where my mom makes me go to fill up the car. It was like $1.34 last week - same company! Nice deal will use :)

$1.09 yesterday at the Racetrac in Arlington Tx on Cooper north of I20. Texaco's low grade was $1.49 a couple blocks away. Why do they even bother? The other 3 Racetracs around here are about $1.28 I dunno why these 2 are cheaper.

Gas in Jackson MO (near Cape Girardeau in SE Missouri) was $1.07 at one, $1.08 at another yesterday.

Wal-Mart (Murphy) in Jackson offers their own sort of "instant rebate". If you go inside the main store and buy a gift card, by using that gift card to purchase their gasoline you get $.03 off of each gallon.

There's also a RaceTrac at I-35 and Frankford (in Carrollton). Exit Frankford, take the loop, and it's on your left. I've heard about a lawsuit against RaceTrac about them putting water in their gas, and it being of very low quality (aluminum shavings in it, etc.). Anyone know anything else about this?

dmbsuperfan:

there have been rumors like that for years, but the thing is these gas stations are inspected pretty often. If they're doing something like that they'll be caught and shut down pretty quickly. Racetrac has been around for a long time, don't think they do stuff like that. I could be wrong because i haven't personally gone out and done a chemical analysis but I find it highly unlikely. They may however use ethanol as 10% of their fuel which some argue is more environmentally safe but not as good for your car. In the long run, just don't use it every time you fill your tank.

I didn't mean to imply that the gas is diluted. Gas is refined many different ways - if you buy gas at a Shell, you're getting the same refining process across the country. Here in LA and TX, there are a bunch of "independent" refineries who use a "cheaper" or "dirtier" method of refining. The gas isn't as "clean" as you get from the "major" refiners. Many car engines tend to run rougher with the cheaper gas.

The state usually checks the pumps yearly for "standards" - not of the gas quality but to make sure that you get a gallon when the meter says a gallon.

Another factor (besides taxes) in cost is your proximity to refineries or pipelines and the associated transportation costs of product.

<< And here I am, paying $2.19 a gallon! Us Silicon Valley people get so screwed on gas... I'm glad I decided to get a corolla instead of some suv. I've pulled up to a pump after a SUV left, and they paid $50+ to fill up! >>

$50? that's it?! must have been a little SUV, those surburbans have 50 gallon gas tanks. Try $100 dollars a tank! Although at 15mpg with 50 gallons it does get 750 miles between fill-ups, so you're more likely to see a Geo/Chevy Metro at the pump than a Surburban :) kinda strange like that . . .

Dang I filled up yesterday @ Racetrac in Grapevine, TX and it was DEFINITELY not $1.09/gal. - and it was damn cold and I was filling up my Suburban - ach! Love the room - three kids and wife - but geez it costs a lot to fill up. $1.09 would be sweet as a permanent price.

a lot of gas stations illegally colude (price fix) especially if they share the intersection with another station. They both agree that no one wins in a price war and so they both jack up prices...usually the way it goes and you can't blame them

HiveTyrant,

What part of Irving? There is a Racetrac right across the street from Sam's on Northwest Highway near I-35. It's near Mercado Juarez restaurant and The Lodge.

I'm not sure what price that Racetrac is offering. I was just noting that there is a Racetrac nearby. It has been my experience that their gas is always a little cheaper than the rest. I live in Las Colinas too and usually go over there to fill up.

How funny. Everyone knows where The Lodge is!

<< There was an old lady across from me. I told her that I had forgot my card and if it's Ok for me to use her membership card to get gas. >>

Nice story! Except I believe Sam's needs to verify the payment method (either Discover or Sam's credit card or other forms) before you get any gas.

BTW, I went to the Greenvill/635 RaceTrack this morning and the price has been jacked up to $1.25/gal. Is that called bait and switch?

I really have to laugh when people talk about "grades" of gasoline...the "dregs" of the refinery.

I dated a girl whose father was a foreman in an oil refinery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Basically, the gas is all the same. The Conoco, Texaco, Exxon, etc trucks pull up to the same refinery and take on the same gas. Which ever refinery is closest, basically. As to gasoline's with detergents and additives...he said they're not worth it--same gas just a few chemicals added.

But, like PT Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute. (Did he say that?) Oh well, someone did. :D
