Hot deal if you want dwarf fruit trees...basically 3 for price of one...also shipping is cheap less than $4.
You are also able to choose 1 free item for each item you buy.
These are deluxe dwarf fruit trees...shipped bare root to you at the appropriate planting time based on your location.
Offer expires 2/4/02.
Trees are from Gurneys...which is back in business this year after being sold in bankruptcy court last year.
I purchased 18 trees plus 18 more "free" trees for $152.16 plus $3.45 shipping.
Not a bad deal if you have the room for an orchard ;)
My first post...please be gentle!

LOL!:) Actually the concept with dwarf fruit trees is that by the time that they actually produce fruit, you will be in a wheelchair and the fuit will be easily accessible;)

I LOVE DWARF FRUIT!!!! Little tiny apples, little tiny oranges, little tiny kumquats...yum! Problem is you need to eat like 50 of them to make a regular size fruit. Also, you can......what? It's a type of tree? Oh, sorry

Be careful!! I've ordered from them before and essentially what you get is a twig. You'd better know what you're doing or the tree will quickly die...

They have to be at least one year old stock, and they are easily sustainable. Usually delux is 2 year old. In any case, 6 trees for $56 is a bargain.

I ordered four trees from Gurney's two years ago. There were about 4 foot long, and obviously didn't have any leaves on them (they were dormant), so, yes, they looked like twigs. I dug a hole, per instructions, watered them, and in about a month (I planted them in the spring), they were growing leaves and are now starting to look pretty good. They will probably start producing fruit next year, dwarf trees usually produce in 3 to 5 years, depending on variety, conditions, etc.

They do need a lot of spraying (to prevent bugs and fungus) and some pruning if you want to have good results. Be careful to get self-pollinating varieties or plant two compatible trees for cross pollination. If they do die for some weird reason, I think most garden places (online or otherwise) will replace them for the first year.

Question. Do you have to buy 3 of the same tree to get the 1/3 price. Or you can buy any 1 for the discounted price. Also for the free tree, do you get to pick or do they just give you the same.

thanks

Decent deal, but there is a limited selection...only 6 different types of fruit trees. Looks like shipping is very cheap ($3.45 flat rate for me, regardless of the number of trees purchased).

You have to buy 3 of the same variety to get the 3 for 1 deal.

In regards to free trees...as I checked out it told me I could select my choice of ~ 15 different types of fruit trees. I purchased 18 dwarf fruit trees...and was able to select 18 "free" trees. The free trees were not dwarf trees but there was larger assortment of standard trees. I was not required to take 3 of each type of them.

Now i need to figure out where to plant them all...lol.

They had Asian Pear trees for $18! You can hardly get a dozen of just the pears for that price. 4-5 feet tall too. I also added a few dwarf apple trees (how can you go wrong at buy 1 get 2 free?) Hope they grow in zone 6!

Now I wonder, do they charge the credit card now, and ship to you/me in 2 or 3 months?

>>>how can you go wrong at buy 1 get 2 free?<<<

I've been refraining from commenting since the thread was started (I didn't want to be negative)...but since you asked: Gurney's is one of the 3 worst companies that I am aware of in the garden business; along with Henry Field's and Michigan Bulb Company. A couple of years ago in the Fall, when I placed my last order with them (and is it exactly that - my LAST order with Gurney's), I purchased 10 Caragana 'trees,' which are easy to grow as a hedge and are hardy all the way up to Canada...I followed the planting instructions closely, and planted at the optimal time. Of the 10 plants, all died within a few weeks. I requested a replacement and received 10 more trees in the Spring, of which 9 promptly died. One is still alive after 3 years, and it has barely grown and is looking pathetic. Among other things, I also had cherry bushes and hydrangeas in the original order...people never believe it's a hydrangea when I point to the 'hydrangea' that they sent - it does not flower and has tiny leaves. Another hydrangea from Gurney's produces weird green flowers instead of pink (it is fed an acid plant food for proper pH). Most of the cherry bushes I received from Gurney's also died, were replaced, and then most of the replacements died.

I am not a novice gardener, and I do know what I am doing...the plants that I purchased from Park Seed (excellent company) are flourishing, and have been for many years. After my last experience with Gurney's (which was my 3rd order over the years, none of which produced healthy plants), I looked around the Web for reviews to see if it was just me that was having problems with this company's products...I am not sure if it was GardenWeb, but there was a site that had many customer reviews for dozens and dozens of companies in the industry. The 3 mentioned above, including Gurney's, had accounts of consistently poor customer experiences over the years.

>>>Gardens Alive is having the same type of sale but they have coupons<<<

Given a choice between Gardens Alive and Gurney's, I would spend the extra bucks with Gardens Alive...given a choice between Gurney's and ANY other company, I would spend more with just about any company. I would stick to top-notch companies like Park Seed and Wayside Gardens when possible...in fact the only reason I used Gurney's last time was because I could not find Caragana trees anywhere else. You get what you pay for.

Yeh, Park Seed is A++++. They are about 45 minutes from here and I try to make an annual trip over there in Feb or March (travel permitting) when the fields of bulbs are bloombing at their headquarters. If you ever have a problem with a product that you purchase from Park Seed, simply call them up and they will give you a 100% refund including shipping! You pay a little more, but you also get what you pay for;)

Justincase,

*sigh* How I wish you hadn't refrained from commenting as long as you did. Not being an expert gardener, it didn't even occur to me that what they send you might not flower as described, etc., etc.. I guess I was duped by the website... I wonder what I'll get now...

Thanks for sharing your experience Justincase. My father who is an avid gardener has never had a problem with Gurney's but perhaps he's just been lucky.

At any rate, perhaps things at Gurney's will change for the better under the new ownership. I'm going to give it a go...at these prices it's worth a shot plus if you receive their catalog there is $20 off $40 purchase coupon. ;)

I get accused of 'complaining' here, even when I'm only sharing my experience...so I've been laying back a bit and have stopped commenting on 'everything'.

Perhaps you'll have better luck, as Wolverine's father did...I sure hope they are better under the new management, than before. If not, at least you're covered by Gurney's guarantee, for what that's worth. For me, there are just some things where I am resolved to spending more for quality products - in the areas of health, vitamins, gardening, and even things like rechargeable batteries...it just pays for me to spend more on top-notch products...though I still want to be sure I'm paying as little as possible for those quality items; that's why I come here.
