I think this is quite an incredible deal.

Has anyone ever bought from them before? They seem to have excellent pricing (also on this model's baby brother the SR5K...only 1449)

Both are prices for NEW and SHIPPED, with the Manf. warranty items. And WOW are these nice to have. DROOOOL 😀

Btw, any of the guys/girls who have had this model for a while, how's it going with it? Can you tell us anything at all/more about your experience with it? (does it seem fast (some reviews said it was "slow"...although I don't see how with a P3 600) and is the heat on the palm rest very bothersome?

I'm still thinking of buying this...sooo nice.

All comments/thoughts are welcome 😀

If you do a search on pricegrabber for the SR7K it actually looks like there are a number of sites that are selling it for around the same price range give or take 20-50 dollars. Most of these vendors are mostly trying to get rid of these laptops so you might be able to find some good prices these days. I personally was looking at these laptops until I opted for the more expensive IBM Thinkpad T21. It's heavier but I went for the solid feel as well as the bigger screen. The SR7K is a pretty nice small laptop though it can be a pain when you consider that you still need to buy an external CD ROM drive etc. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for.

The reason I am considering this is because of its' light weight and reasonably good price. I suppose this is so as there are no CD-Rom drives nor FDD, but I could always set up a network with my main computer and use its' resources.

I also am thinking of getting a USB CD-R burner that could also serve to load/save/exchange programs.

But I'll certaintly go to pricegrabber.

Actually, I just picked up a SR5K on Ubid. I was looking for something extra small to take on trips with me. This baby is very thin and light (<3 lbs.). Screen, though small for obvious reasons, is very sharp and usable. Speed does not seem fast enough for a 500mhz. I attribute this to the harddrive and the fact that it only came with 64mb ram. I quickly ordered more ram! Be warned that the little Sony takes special little ram that is reasonable at 64mb (about $70) and nuts at 128mb (>$250). All in all, though, this laptop does exactly what it should and is truly portable... not to mention very stylish! 🙂

The SR7K is basically the same model with a P3/600 versus the SR5K's P3/500; two 64mb sticks of ram versus one stick of 64; and a 12g harddrive versus a 9g.

Oh, I did get the matching cdrom drive. Again, very stylish... but, due to the price, get it only if you must carry it with you. Otherwise, use a usb drive or Ethernet to load things.

Also, does the heat seem excessive/bothersome to you?

I played with one at a CompUSA and it was a bit hot, and I'm wondering if that's an issue with users over a long term.

The machine does get hot on the bottom after awhile... not much buffer, I would think, between the internals and your lap. 🙂

As a reference for you: I bought the machine on UBid. It is a Sony refurb with 90 day factory warranty (doubled by using AMEX!)... adding ram probably voids warranty, anyway. Price was 1098 + shipping... pretty decent. I picked up the refurb cdrom for $149. The refurbs, btw, arrived in better condition than some new laptops I have gotten over the years... no dead pixels... yeah!

I have been warned by friends that Sony Viaos have overheating problems. Not sure about that but considering the size of these laptops, how do they keep the internal components cool enough is beyond me. I love these little guys. My aunt has one, her company bought for her, it's sweet with the metal case and all (hers is the newer models with the bigger screens about $3000), but they are fragile. She dropped hers and $1000 to fix a lcd light. I personally like my F630 series twice the weight with DVD and 13&quot; screen, but even with this big guy (7lbs) I still notice the bottom of the laptop getting hot after some usage. So it makes me wonder...

Many people said that this unit feels &quot;fragile&quot;. Do you agree? It seemed sturdy enough at the CompUSA, but again I don't have much experience with this model.
 
When I mean 'fragile', it meant a few things. The weird way the battery jiggles from the back of the computer where the LCD meets the rest of the computer, where the 'arms' hold the LCD to the rest of the laptop, they are plastic (I saw the laptop after it had been dropped and it was kinda cheesy looking on the laptop for that price) and also kind of loose. Of course one main thing ALL laptops are fragile, but I guess the size of this thing make it more noticeable. Also the fact that it looks sturdy but after opening and closing it a few times and using it a bit it made me nervous because I would treat it a bit rougher due to how 'sturdy' it looks.
 
Thanks Mysterie. I suppose it'll force us to be more gentle with our electronics, of which we should be anyway.

I don't know why this notebook doesn't have a huge following. It seems to be just perfect and what many are looking for: a bit of power, long battery life, and so very light.
 
I owned once a SR5K and just got a SR7K. SR5K running on 800*600 and SR7K on 1024*768, you feel a little small, but very sharp, clear, so quickly used to it. I really do love this kind of machine

Because of my (blind) vision, I'm thinking of the 800*600 model now. Does that seemed cramped with such a small screen?
 
I find the screen perfectly functional for my uses. Screen is very clear and readable. I use and like the 800*600, but higher is available. I wouldn't use the screen for design, but that isn't what it's made to be used for. 🙂 You can always attach a bigge monitor, if you need to.

xl46, do you notice any real difference between the 5 and the 7?
 
i personally would rather shell out the extra couple hundred for a z505 instead, comes with a 12 inch screen instead and almost as light.

Im pretty amazed at all the space left on the screen panel for a 10 inch screen..
they could have made it 11 inches at least! or maybe stretched it out like the new powerbook titanium 🙂

still pretty sweet.
