OK, here's the deal:

Go to Amazon.com

Netgear RT311 Internet Access Gateway Router

RT311 Review Here
RT311 Review Here (2)
Router Review / Updated Performance #'s - 12/13/2000

$113.94
----
224.08

Use:
Amazon $50 off 200 / free shipping
or visit Link and find it there.
---
$174.08 on your CC.

Then use rebates from both products:
- Netgear FS-108 $40 Rebate (Link from product page at Amazon)
- Netgear RT311 $30 Rebate (Link from product page at Amazon)
----
$104.08 a few months later.

Of course, everyone has their own preference on switches and routers, but, if you want this combo, it's a hot deal, imho.

BTW, the rebate forms did not appear at first for me. I had to sign on with a new browser and go to the item manually to get them to appear. If you have a problem, try again from a clean browser session.

Can also do this, you'll end up with 8 ports instead of 7 with the other config:

Netgear RT314 $154.94
Linksys 10/100 5 port switch $47.94

That's $202.88. Subtract $50 off $200, the $20 rebate for the router, and the $10 rebate for the switch, and it comes out to $122.88. Definately not bad considering you only have $30 MIR to wait on compared to $70, plus the RT314 is faster than the RT311.

If you found a benchmark showing the RT314 is faster I'd like to see... I haven't found that yet. Either should be sufficient for ADSL or Cable though.

I think you still end up with 7 ports if you share a uplink port on both the router and the switch. (4-1) + (5-1) = 7. Depends on whether or not either device has a dedicated uplink port--from what I've read the 5port and 8port switches have a shared uplink port (so you loose one when connecting to the router).

Also, I don't understand the comment about the rebates, either way it looks like you have 2 rebates, one is a $30 and $40 and the other is $10 and $20. All are from NetGear so the timeframes should be the same?

Update: Nevermind, I think I understand, you are saying there is less risk since you don't have to tie up $70 of your own cash--not an issue about time but about $$$.

All in all, nice followup. Always good to have additional options.

does anyone know how good Netgear is on Rebates??? or how about Linksys?? just curious sounds pretty darned good to me! *sigh* i need to stop these 'rebates'... damn 'hot deals' maxing out my CC!!! great find though!

arg, seriously all these hot deals and rebates are stacking up on my CC. jeez, this past 2 days ive bought the kingston ram for 70 with $20 rebate, $20 cdr with $20 rebate, and now this $174 set with $70 rebate. oh well, at least ima get some new toys =). jumped in on this deal, this is AMAZING deal.

Check this site out for speed info between the RT311 vs RT314.

Router Comparison Table

You'll see that the rt314 is extremely fast! Maybe twice as fast as the rt311 based on the speed testing done! If you have a fast cable connection then the rt314 is the one to get. My cable connection has gone as high as 6.6 megabits (thats 810 kbytes/sec for a 64 megabyte file) from its local ftp servers and I've downloaded from the RedHat linux site at 4.8 megabits/sec (18 minutes to download an ISO image). So the rt311 would have slowed down my connection, based on the numbers indicated on this site.

really interesting... oh well.. i just got in on the deal.. should be arriving in the next couple days! but i can't wait.. this is definitely a hot deal if you don't mind getting a 'late $70 christmas present' at the end of january!

Which one is better, cuz i have to setup a few computers at my office, and this would be good to share the inet access among them, and network them up...$50 isn't gonna make much difference...so just performance reliability wise?

The RT314 is definately faster than the RT311. RT314 has a faster processor, overall performance and stability for both is great. Whatever you do, just don't buy the Linksys router.

Netgear RT314 Router availiable at Staples.
Pricematch to Onvia.com at $154
Less $40 on $150.
Free shipping. Plus tax.
$20 rebate.

I wanted the Atache', but couldn't figure out the code.
Thanks everyone for the info.

In the user reviews section it says:

"It (the RT311) is faster than the practically networked review. The WAN to LAN routing easily does over 5Mbps."

I don't think speed of the RT311 vs RT314 will be an issue for 99% of the population.

compare w/ SMC Barricade¢â (EZ Cable / DSL Router w/built-in 4 Port 10/100 Switch)
for $99 at Onvia.com

which one is better ?

I think regardless if the speed differences are negligible or not, the fact is the RT311 is the model that is being phased out and the RT314 is the one that is replacing it. That is my understanding of it. At work they are selling the RT314's for $80. Can anyone tell me if this is a good deal or not? I ask because I won't be using this until next year when I move off campus and get a cable modem. I figure around July they'll come out with a better one or if not better, the RT314 will drop to that price? Question is should I get it at this bargain deal of $80 or wait til I move?
