I was at Best Buy in Aurora, CO (I-225 and Mississippi) last night and they had several 20GB 5400 RPM Western Digital drives in open boxes. The guy said that they usually return them to the comapny, but because of some inventory thing going on, they were selling them at lower prices. They also had 30GB ATA100 7200 RPM Western Digital drives for $100. Not bad prices for B&M. I bought 2 30GB drives and they both work fine.

Just thought I'd pass this along in case other Best Buy's are doing the same thing.

No, NOT a hot deal. When you can get a 20GB Maxtor at Staples for $70 shipped.... then $20 rebate.

Maxtor 40GB at CUSA for $150 then $50 rebate. Good the rest of the week.

5400rpm 20giggers open box $75?
Sams club had the 20 gig 7200 rpm ata66 drives for $59 after rebate, and regular price was $$89 I think.

They're brand new, therefore covered under warranty. Also, I don't like to deal with mail-in rebates unless it's absolutely neccessary, so this was a really good deal for me. We don't have Staples here and I don't have a Sam's membership, not interested in one.

The staples deal for NEW Maxtor $70... you don't HAVE TO HAVE A STAPLES! They ship for free.

Unless you are some idiot, you aren't geting why people are making these comments. A OPEN BOX drive for $75 is NOT a better deal than a NEW DRIVE for $70 shipped.

The word "hot" is being abused here. It is basically a "scratch and dent" deal and not even a good one when NEW can be had for lower (and $70 is WITHOUT REBATE).

I really don't see what makes this a HOT DEAL. My Best buy doesn't have any of them nor do they keep any around. Glad you thought it was a HOT enough deal to post.

OR -

"Thanks, but this may not be really hot because .........."

Give the guy a break - he'll learn.

its a lukewarm deal at best, no need to pounce on the guy. Open box are returnable, and if it works, it works, and it's under warranty. you buy it, and understand there's always that possibilty.

i would personally not buy it because i've worked at best buy, and i know how stuff is handled.

the staples deal is ok, drive is only 5400 rpm, and they JUST got it back in stock :) i did get in on that one, mainly for a dump drive, but we'll see how it compares to my old 34GXP speed wise.

Ill never buy from Best Buy again. I bought 2 Maxtor Hard Drives from them-they were both shrinkwrapped. I got home and opened the first one-everything looks fine. I get to the second box and the 1st thing I say to myself is "hey this box seems light". Next I take off the shinkwrap and try to open the box, but the box is glued shut. Ive bought many Maxtor drives before and I know that Maxtor doesnt glue their boxes shut. So I had to get a knife and pry the box open. Low an behold guess what was there-a broken EQ from a car. Man was I pissed. I knew when I took it back to BB they would give me crap that this wasnt possible. Luckily my dad was there when I opened them so I had an alibi. When I took them back they did give me crap-made me feel like a thief-syaing that there is no way possible that the eq could have gotten there without me putting it there. I eventually got another drive, but ill never buy from them again-and I spent around $500 a month there for parts. I figure somebody bought it-swapped the drive with the eq-and then glued it shut(they might have shinkwrapped it as well-or BB did that after it was returned)the BB person who took the return probably figured they couldnt open the box so the drive musnt have been tampered with. Terrible experience.
