Was wondering why a thread for a sale at a lisenced gun dealer would have been deleted? The rules listed for the forum do not include any wording that I saw that included guns.

What other kinds of posts are not permitted?
No SPAM! This includes:
Links to muli-level marketing schemes such as pay-to-surf or pay-for-referral sites, whether paid in cash or premiums.

No links to auction sites. We do not consider auctions to be Hot Deals. Posting a link to your own auction offer may be reason to lock your account.

No links to deals, promotions or offers by your own business or your employer. This is the "No Dealers" rule. We do not intend our forums as a free sales floor for your business. If you want to promote your company on AnandTech, contact our sales department about buying a banner ad.
No links to gaming sites, tobacco products or pornographic or sexually explicit materials.

No links to offers of OEM software without qualifying hardware or to software licenses without a qualifiying installation disk (CD, etc.).

No group buys. Sorry, but these deals have been costly to our members from both honest mistakes and outright fraud.

Thanks,
KK

We are currently discussing this situation.

From the FS/FT forum rules (yeah, I know that's not the Hot Deals forum, but I have to think it applies just the same...)

<snip>
No alcohol, tobacco, firearm, or any weapons sales.

It shouldn't.

I would think that private selling people may not abide by the laws, whereas a company or store has too.

(added bold for emphasis)... well... it would be nice if we could trust stores or companies to behave within the boundaries of the law or ethics! ;)

It would, however, be nice for a mod to step in and put all the speculation to rest... if AT Forums has a policy concerning firearms, it should be available to us somewhere....

Anyone who purchases a gun at retail has to go through whatever background checks/waiting period/etc applies in their state, it is up to the store to worry about legal issues. We allow hot deals with cars, you have to be 18 to enter a contract, 16 to drive, why should guns be any different?

I fully support not allowing it in the FS/FT forums, but Hot Deals amounts to one person telling another "Hey XYZ Retail store has ABC on sale for $199.99, that's a pretty good price."

There is absolutely no reason that firearms (or any other legal product) should be excluded from the Hot Deals forum UNLESS there is a general ban on it. We allow discussion of guns, alcohol, tobacco, etc. in Off Topic and P&N. Pornography, however, is not allowed and is excluded (rightfully so) from the Hot Deals forum.

oldsmoboat - which part do you concur with? Above I copied the rules for FS/FT and figured they applied globally and you dissented... then you concur with Viper's statement about they should be allowed UNLESS there is a general ban on it.

I can't believe you're still missing the point...

From your own rule copy:

No alcohol, tobacco, firearm, or any weapons sales.

edit: looks like they decided to allow it after all as the thread is back up inHot Deals.

I'm not quite sure how I stand on this since the sale of firearms is legal. On the other hand, so is the sales of tobacco and that is not allowed in Hot Deals. I think that my stance is that there are plenty of items to post in Hot Deals without going into the sales of firearms.

I also think that I might have felt differently if the deleted thread had actually been discussing the sale but it didn't seem like they were.

edited to correct my bad in the number of deaths: Maybe as long as we have 29,000+ people in this country die each year from firearms we could just opt not to showcase gun deals. It won't bother me either way. It will bother me if just one person buys a weapon from a post here and uses it to kill someone.

BTW - I am a firearm owner.

I don't believe there is a general rule.
I don't think guns sales should be allowed in FS/T.
I do believe they should be allowed in HD.

Myth. In 2001, 800 unintentional, 16863 suicides, and 11326 homicides according to the CDC. There may be a few more, but they did not make the top 20 breakdown.

Shoot, I got my number from CDC but I guess I misread something and now I can't find that page.

edit: Found it. I think I somehow changed the search from "firearm" to "all" . The CDC amount for 2001 shows for me as 29,573 where I looked which is right about what gsellis said.

It was an obvious one as that would be more than 3 times the rate of traffic accident deaths. The local news does not bear out that rate ;)

More children drown in 5 gallon buckets than are killed by guns.

I want a ban on hot deals listing 5 gallon buckets:|

Seriously though, any weapons sold by Oshman's are sold according to the letter of the law (I've bought a handgun from them in the past)

Strangely enough, I'm in the market for a new handgun & am going to call my local Oshman's to see if they have a 10 mm Glock I've been looking @. I also use a local FFL dealer that charges me a whopping $15 for his transfer fee.

I think it's unfortunate the mods have decided to lock the thread, I'd always perceived AT as being a bit more in line with our constitution/state laws, especially concerning firearms.

Perhaps there should be a ban/lock on all firearms threads

yes.. :sigh;<edit> We changed our minds about how to handle xxxxxx' stupidity. The firearms thread is locked, but we decided to give it one more chance if someone posts another legitimate deal. If the same thing happens, we will ban such deals.

Mod

Could the mods just delete the posts and give the violators a 2 week or longer vacation for posting immature requests and such in hot deal threads concerning deals on firearms thru legit places.

I'm not understanding what is still wrong with the post, is it the gunbroker/guns america url's?

They're legit too. I've used both sites in the past...
