This is the going rate for DSL. You can pay the same price at Mindspring/Earthlink and get up to 1.5meg down. Alternately, most local phone companies are offering 640K for $39.95 with no setup fees.

(And with Mindsprign, they'll give you the modem AND a Network card [if you need it] completely free.)

telocity will give you the modem too, no nic card, but the modem can do USB. i left telocity and went with mindspring. MS uses Covad and Telo uses Rhythms and from my experience i find that Covad is better here. MS is aDsl and Telo is sDSL. but this is the going rate so its not a hot deal.

I've had Telocity for ~3 months now, and it pounds lumps on BellSouth. Nice external "modem" (unlike the crappy USB one that BellSouth uses), and (knock-on-wood) no down time, unlike BellSouth's one-every-other-week server failure. Plus, your own IP to boot...

In some area you might have to wait for months........and I mean months.
I have ordered a service since May ($39.99 plan with everything free of charge)................they still can't set me up.
The modem is just sitting here with no sign of installer.
Some of you might be in luck.

It was 40 bucks a month for me, with 1.5mbps/128kbps and free modem. Unfortunately, however, they were unable to provide service to my place. Dunno if this works, but "EB1 SSC" should give you a free month. Ask for it. There is also a two months free type deal, where you get the 6th and 12th months free.

Telocity is without doubt the absolute worst service provider I've had or could imagine.

They never return calls even if they promise to. Service is non-existent.

I spent 6 months trying to get the service after they initiated the order and have spent the past 4 months trying to resolve a billing dispute that keeps getting worse.

Well with my experiance, Telocity was horrible at first (around May) but they got their act together. Customer Service is pretty quick and no downtimes in my area. Bellsouth on the other hand provides horrible service. First they have hold times of around 30 minutes on calls. Their webpage is never updated so you don't know if there is an outage in your area. The Telocity modem will tell you where the outage is at (either line, telocity server, or internet problem) Also with Bellsouth, outages are at least once a week. Seems like Bellsouth signed up too many people and need to constantly upgrade equipment to handle the load.

I've got Telocity in Chicago - I got in on the original market test install so I have 784k up and 784k down (SDSL). Speed is great, customer support may be lacking (I never call), down time lately has been minimal to nothing, downtime a couple months ago was very annoying... The network is *very* fast. I connect to a number of Counter-Strike servers with 23-65 ping (tons) and many many slightly above that...

Telocity gives you a permanent IP address and you can run servers (just not for profit of course). There are no limits on bandwidth (they were going to put in a 1 gig upload cap then $20/gig after that but instead they lowered the "up" speed...

Getting DSL installed is a big pain in the ass. If you wait impatiently for it you will be pissing and moaning like no tomorrow. If you order DSL, sit back, relax, let your life keep on track for the next 8-12 weeks, and then enjoy your new speed. Expect at least one or two problems to crop up (most likely scheduling problems, occasionally local telco problems).

Lastly don't use the USB port for DSL - use the ethernet port. It is much better supported plus it is FASTER! Avoid the USB port...

Viva DSL.

EDIT: the 8-12 weeks thing was when DSL was first released in Chicago, I would imagine things have gotten a bit faster since then.

If you want more information on Telocity go to deja.com and do a power search with the forum as "chi.internet" and the keyword as "telocity" (of course). Lots of good info there.

I have Mindspring in the Chicago suburbs. It took less than 2 weeks from signup to install.
The Covad installer doesn't really do anything except verify the Ameritech line with
thier laptop computer. I've been online for about 4 weeks so far no complaints.

Just a quick note about comparing services: DSLReports is fantastic because, as its name suggests, it's full of actual reports from people who have ordered DSL service. You really can't make any generalizations about a national company, other than the hold times on its customer service numbers.

Mindspring is great where I am, but could be crap elsewhere. Different equipment, different installers, different local phone companies (no matter who you go with, the local phone company is going to be the one setting up your initial wiring). So you can't really say "Mindspring is the best" or "Mindspring sucks," since there is so much variation from region to region.

DSLReports lets you search for a specific region, so you can hear what kind of experiences people are having in your area. My advice: It's very tempting to look for the company that appears to be able to install the fastest, but don't. Self-install in many areas is a crock and a sure-fire way to get far lower speeds than you otherwise could. Look at the reports about what kinds of spees and uptime people in your area are getting. I waited 3 months for my mindspring, cursing them every day. But I get 1400 down, and I'm not cursing them anymore.

I have Telocity in Chicago also. the service does have its quirks, going down maybe once or twice a week for 5-10 minutes at a time which can be really annoying. When I call, their service sucks. I had to call 3 times to change the CC# they bill, and I still don't know if its changed over yet. On the PLUS side, I bitched when they had bad outages 2 months back and got a free month. Also, I pay $49 a month for 1mb SDSL, have no quotas, have a static IP, and can run whatever kind of server I want, as long as its not commercial. I've considered changing (esepcially during those annoying hiccups in service) however I know I'm not going to get a deal this good anywhere else.

I have had Telocity DSL in Chicago for over a year now and they are pretty good. The best thing is that they don't really care what you do with your DSL line or what you connect to it. You aren't limited to Windows only, you can use NAT to share with as many PC's as you want, etc.

i ordered mindspring and they screwed my address up. finally when the covad guy came down, he just checked the line and told me it wasnt possible to hook it up since the loop showed 20000 ft and i live a mile away from the CO. i was so furious and he told me that he will have pacific bell check it out and issue a trouble ticket for me. next thing i know is that i got the notification that my dsl order was cancelled. i was so pissed.
i ordered telocity now. they told me that i should be able to get it. so i got my fingers crossed.

mindspring sux nuts.

If you have Verizon in your area get that. No contract, free modem, installation, first month free all for $40 a month.

I'm using Earthlink/Mindspring in LA, 90007. $40/month, 1.5M/128K, free equipment which include modem and nic, free activation, free professional installation from Covad (if it's pacbell, maybe only self-installation is free) and only 6 months contract. Took 5 weeks from signup to installation. Quite happy with it so far. The only problem is the DSL software they provide doesn't support Win ME, I have to get an update version somewhere else (from another ISP :))

I think Verizon is only providing 680K/128K at the same price, that's the information I got 2 months ago. And they're not providing serivce in my area.

I'd considered Telociy before. When I called, they said they couldn't find out whether my address was within the distance and would call back later. They had never called me back and had never replied my email!
