Please note the thread I linked above. My current AAK's are getting much better results than those in that original test but still sligthly slower than an AAE (71 vs 74 max).

Seagate sets their PATA drives to quiet mode (equivalent of AAM enabled) and their SATA drives to performance mode (equivalent to AAM disabled) by default. I have two equivalent Seagate drives except for the interface, and the SATA seeks are definitely louder.

For that reason, I prefer a different brand for SATA drives...but it's the Maxtors retail drives that are the ones that are most commonly on sale.

If there is actually modified firmware to put Seagate SATA drives in quiet mode, that would be great.

Maxtor Basics don't have AAM/ACM feature.
It's cheap but loud. You get what you paid for.
