I'm currently an intern at an information company. When we interns went through new employee orientation, we were told we would not be paid for company holidays. Today, we received an email from HR telling us assuming we had satisfactory reviews at the end of the summer, we'd receive vacation pay.

Good for you. The company is spending an extra $1000 on you to make you feel special. The money is well worth it to a company if they can can retain an intern that will become a a valuable employee.
