Ok, I've got a few minutes to kill. This is going to be long...
On Sunday, the day this deal started, I attempted to order this router on-line, but it was OOS in my zip code. Using the alternate ZIP CODE "OD EXPLOIT" (something I've posted about in previous threads), I was able to place an order FOR DELIVERY. I was also able to place a subsequent order for STORE PICKUP; however, only to a store in a completely different STATE (i.e. nowhere near me).
The FOR DELIVERY order was (until today) listed as "3 Days Delivery Pending" w/ the correct $67.74 price & $47.74 coupon. Today that order has changed to "Completed Marked Out," where the item's price has been zero'd out w/ no mention of the coupon. A subsequent order has been entered into my OD account (an order I never submitted) listing the router at $67.74 and no coupon! :| It looks like my FOR DELIVERY order is toast (although I'll fight that battle if/when I recieve the FOR DELIVERY router).
In the mean time, I took my STORE PICKUP web receipt to a LOCAL OD which had the router in stock. At the customer service desk was a Customer Service Manager. I explained to her that I had ordered the router on-line for store pickup yet somehow it chose an OD completely out of state (nowhere near me). The CSM seemed like she was willing to xfer the order over from the wrong store to her store; however, she didn't know how to do that. She called for a store manager, and an Assistant Manager showed up. He started giving me the shpiel about how he won't be able to honor my order because the coupon code I used requires the purchase of a Laptop computer. He even showed me the sales flyer which lists the coupon stipulation.
I disagreed with him saying that it wasn't clearly listed that way on Office Depot's web-site. He then asked me to show him where I found the coupon. We walked over to a computer in the store and I proceeded to show him as follows:
1) Go to
preview.officedepot.com
2) On the right hand side click, where it says Advertised Specials, click "View Specials"
3) On the next page, click the link on the right for "Computers & Software"
4) Then click the link for "Computer Network Products"
If you stop right there, you can see the router listed along w/ the coupon code and no mention (on that page) of needing to purchase a computer. It does say something about a "Combined purchase," but it doesn't say what that purchase is. Thus, it's AMBIGUOUS!
He then clicked on the router link itself which opened up a page which listed the COMPUTER PURCHASE stipulation. I argued that it didn't matter, since the previous page listed the information. I explained that I had followed the information OD supplied, ordered the item on their web-site, and the order was accepted. He still wouldn't budge. I then said that this is a very shady business practice on the part of OD.
We headed back to the customer service desk where he proceeded to look further at my order. His final decision was that he couldn't honor it. I was about to leave the store in disappointment when I said to him "This is very shady. What's the number for the district office?" He said "hang on," walked away for a about 5 minutes and came back. When he returned he said "Why don't we call Corporate Customer Service right now and see if we can resolve this matter?" I agreed. He called up, asked for "Internal Customer Service," and spoke w/ an internal CSR for about 5 minutes explaining everything that I was arguing. After he and the Internal CSR agreed with his position, he wisely passed the phone over to me. About 30 seconds into my conversation w/ the Internal CSR, the "REAL" store manager walked up to me and said "you can hang up. I'll honor the price." She then told her employees "this is our mistake, not his. Honor the price. Ring it up with the coupon code. If it doesn't work that way, lower the price." And honor it they did!
Although I didn't deal with the store manager until the very end (when she walked up to me while on the phone w/ the Internal CSR), it's embarassing to a store manager for a customer go above his/her head to try and resolve such a dispute. If you maintain a calm yet forceful demeanor (as I did), if you act as though you're 100% in the right on the matter, and if you try going up the corporate food chain, you too may luck out.
The above is a HUGE YMMV, but it's worth a shot!
P.S. After asking the Asst. Manager for the District Office phone #, when he walked away for 5 minutes, he probably went to discuss the matter w/ the Store Manager.
P.S.S. Thanks for the deal!
