I'm in Phoenix too. What are you getting speed wise? I think the 39.99 per month plan is 3Mbps. So can we upgrade to 4Mbps for free?
I don't do a lot of uploading, so I haven't tested that portion out yet, but I have built/fixed a few computers over the last week and had noticed what I considered to be a subtle speed increase (from my typical max 400K/30K speeds) in downloading patches and whatnot. Then last night I paid attention as I downloaded SP2 (yes all 266 MB) for a couple more new ones. I achieved an average of ~500 K/sec. Seems like it took about 10 minutes or so total. So it seems as though they have implemented it here too. And no, you do not have to do anything to get this activated.

i live in nva area and been with cox from almost the beginning. This seems to be 2nd upgrade in this area. My downloading speed is about 450 - 500 kbp/s

here's the thing i learned about Cox when it works it works fine but when u get problem, u r screwed. like my modem keeps dropping the signal i was told it might be my modem that gone bad, replaced the modem and it's still doing it. i just gave up they can't seem to be able to fix it and it's not worth wasting my time on them. get a downloading manager and let it deal with it.

From what website can you actually download at those speeds though? I've been surfing a long time, but the fastest I've ever had was from Apple, and even then I averaged around 600kb.

Hunh, at my dorm we have like 40Mb a sec connection and from microsoft i can generally get about 3.4MB, yes that is mega BYTES per second. Service pack 1 in about 30 seconds, all 120 megs of it.

Somehow, I really doubt that you have 40megaBYTES per second. Even with 100mbit, you top out at 12.5meg/s max theoretical. Unless your dorm room is wired with gigabit throughout the entire campus you aren't gettin 40meg/s.

you are obviously a moron. he meant a 40mbit/sec connection, making a download speed of 3.4 mbyte/sec completely reasonable.

This guy actually read what i said and was completely right, i made a point to say 40Mb, with a small "b" which means bits. Yeah And it is no BS. I go to UNO, and Walter scott, part owner of level 3 owns our dorms and pays for my school, and he treats us very nice, so an oc-48 connection = cheap when you own a large networking company!!!

I am a Cox customer in Tulsa OK.

I was checking this thread and their site. I noticed my modem wasn't on their list. (Motorola SB4100) go figure!
But then I speed checked via SpeakEasy in Houston, TX. and found out I am upgraded already!

woohoo! 🙂

Here's my speed test results:

2004-08-12 21:47:18 EST: 3927 / 479
Your download speed : 4021416 bps, or 3927 kbps.
A 490.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 491038 bps, or 479 kbps.

Snap, I live in Pensacola, FL too!

Here's a shout-out to all the fellow P-Colans! I'm in Pensacola too. I just checked my bandwidth on bandwidthplace.com and I'm getting about 3.7mb down. Awesome!

Hey Trevelyan, didn't you get a notice one time about excessive usage? I think my Bro told me that you got a notice like that a while back.

There's a few of us in Pensacola it seems.

2004-08-13 03:36:17 EST: 3768 / 492
Your download speed : 3858640 bps, or 3768 kbps.
A 471 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 504123 bps, or 492 kbps.

nicely done, only to blow it in the last sentence :-\

Man download speed doesn't even matter. I didn't notice a different between Verizon DSL 768 kb vs Comcast 3 MB. I don't think it matters what MB it is because you're never going to fully use # MB anyway ( Unless you're downloading like 30 movies at once ) 😛. Anything above 768 = Good. 🙂

Maybe you don't notice a difference between connections, but I definitely do. In Huntsville, TX (where I go to college) Cox is available w/ their gay 1 Mb max downstream and 2 gigs of bandwidth allowed per month (I can easily use that in a day). With their connection my download speeds were roughly 90-120 kb/s. At my parent's house in Houston, TX where Roadrunner is, there is a 4 Mb downstream offered with unlimited bandwidth for the same price Cox charges in Huntsville. With Roadrunner my download speeds are roughly 350-400 kb/s.

That's a pretty noticeable difference for me.

Yeah I did get that notice awhile back. But I haven't heard anything from them recently so I think it's cool now.

Note to fellow southern virginians. My speed almost doubled. Went from an average 2100k to ~3900k down and 250k to 410k up.

I never had a problem with cox and for those who need a static IP why dont you just use a dynamic DNS server.

Well besides the 40gb/down and 10gb/up per month limitations... good enough for the average gamer. Not good enough for the above average piraters.

what is the point of 5 / 768 when you can still only download 40gig/month?

Like the above poster said

The only reason to use over 40gig is to download stuff.
You do not need 5mbit down to play games.
Why not save the $20/month and get a slower service?

I just dont see the point of 5mbit down when your limited to 40gig/month

*The Preferred Package and Premier Package prices include a $10 discount for Cox customers that subscribe to any level of cable or telephone service. The Value Package is the same price for Cox customers and non-Cox customers.

so if you dont have cable or telephone thru cox, you will have to pay an additional 10bux
