Hot! COmpusa WD 175gb $109 AR

They have a typo (messup) on their rebate form.

If you look at the 2nd page it says

Offer valid on the applicable product specified on this rebate form and must be postmarked no later than May 13, 2003.

Might want to double check with them before buying this product.

Actually .. when i got this during that 6hr sale, it was a 5mb upgrade to 180gb, not an 8mb cache upgrade .. just a heads up.

Elsewhere on the rebate form it says "must be postmarked no later than 6/30/03"

Since they are advertising it with the rebate, I would think that 6/30/03 is the correct date. Hopefully they'll correct the form.

haha definitely a typo. The offer didn't even start May 13!
😛

hmmm, i see:

Offer valid only at CompUSA 5/16/03 thru 6/16/03. Requests must be postmarked
no later than 6/30/03.

on the rebate itself. shouldn't be much problem since the rebate form, upc, and receipt are the only thing that matters, and not the website info.

//krunk (^_^x)

FYI: There is no such thing as a 175gb drive. They are all 180BB's in a 175gb box, done merely to prevent pricematching/etc.

They were $99 over a month and a half ago.. so not that hot, IMO.

it's always a bit laughable when people point out the 2mb cache thing.. unless an 8mb one was comperable i'd understand but MOST ppl won't even notice that extra cache.

2MB cache is perfectly fine for storing animes 🙂 which BTW is exactly what I do with the same drive bought during the compusa anniversary sale. Only thing bad about this drive is the noise level.

JFYI my rabates came after 6 weeks, which is rather fast.

Anyone know whether the RAID capability in Intel's ICH5R southbridge only applies to the SATA headers or also to the PATA headers?

I also got in on this one during the 6hr sale, and it's a bit faster than a 100gb ATA100 drive I purchased last year. Both have 2mb buffers. Nero shows this one as being 47.712KB/sec, which ain't bad considering the price.

How much faster are the 8mb models?

no, i don't think you understand. the 8MB cache drives by western digital have 3 year warranties. not only is the 2MB cache slower, it has a shorter warranty term. but don't fret, i have two of these drives myself. excellent drives for bulk storage or RAID 0 configurations, but not recommended as a primary hard drive with an OS installed because it is slower and the constant read/write of an OS will strain the drive and make it more likely to fail. i recommend this hard drive as a second drive where you store MP3s, DVDs, and other large media. excellent price per GB though!

Oh come on. The drive is more than fast enough to be a primary drive.

It's no more or less reliable than any other drive- if you're really that nervous you can purchase another 2yrs from WD. I didn't see a need for that.
