with a 160gb, can i partition the entire drive as160gb or do I need to break it up? Does XP support 160gb partition? what about 98SE?

It was the ad I get from CompUSA each week. Every sunday is when ads from all the big stores come with the sunday newspaper... so thats where the ad came from. It was on the back page of the ad, the sale for the hard drive. I don't have the ad anymore though, one of the employees asked if they could keep the ad, so I said it was fine. The only other staples around is a bit of a drive for me especially with traffic, so I didn't care too much about keeping the ad (and possibly doing it again for another HD, or whatever)

Also does anyone know if theres any limitations on how many you can buy?, theres no limit thing in the ad, but I figured there might be a limit 1, since its such a discount off the regular price. I don't know if anyplace would actually pricematch more than one either... and I didn't ask Staples because that was their last 160 gb HD left.

i intend to put this in a usb enclosure. is it the enclosure that will determine if I can do a >120gb partition or is it the OS?

hahaha i got the last one at the CompUSA in culvercity on jefferson. I went to the one in Redondo Beach first but they were completely sold out. The store in culver city had 13 in the morning...by evening they only had 3 left so i called ahead and asked them to put one on hold for me.... how very nice of them :)

Windows XP SP1 will know how to manage a partition that size.

Windows XP and Win98 will be like uhhhh wtf -- you need a special IDE card for it to be recognized under those operating systems.

Decided to pick up 2 more of these yesterday (for a total of 3; 1 for my Xbox and 2 for my PC). CompUSA was out of stock, but Best Buy had no problem 110% PM'ing (Miami, FL). :D

Unless I'm mistaken, the Xbox can't use a HD bigger than 137mb

Oh, ok. Looks like someone came out with a workaround for the size limit on the Xbox. Nevermind then.

Windows XP SP1 will know how to manage a partition that size.

Windows XP and Win98 will be like uhhhh wtf -- you need a special IDE card for it to be recognized under those operating systems.

reg XP just needs LBA48 bit(possible caveat of data corruption according to MSor service pack1 installed)..98/Me would need it broken partitions(possible run full single partition with controller card..read further)..but excerpted from here ..his Win98SE test..
Anyway, as soon as I threw a PCI PATA RAID card into the system and ran
the drive off of it, the whole capacity was available as expected. When I
left the card in the system but moved drive back to motherboard IDE it
again failed to go past 128GB.

So basically my whole experiment revolved around a mistaken rememberance
that it'd worked on an nForce board without any extra driver, when it now
seems that it was on a KT333 board that it'd worked under Win98, which I'm
sure did have the 4in1 drivers installed.

They might be a little suspicious with a printout, but I don't really know for sure. I always seem to have an ad if I PM, so I fortunately don't have to print something out and try my luck.

hep, PM at staples with a printout worked like a charm, they didn't even call compusa to confirm stock.

except as i was leaving i noticed i only got the %100 pricematch. they did a return - rering with the %110 and took care of my tax and got me some Flipz ... mmmm.... chocolate pretzels & $0.50 per gigglebyte without rebate!

Went to the Compusa in Holyoke, Ma and they were out. It's too bad, this is like the only Compusa I've been in where the employees are nice.

Anyways there is a Worst Buy in the Holyoke Mall. Walked in grabbed the drive off the shelf, went to customer service. They matched the model number, filled out a form, had me fill in my info, then they had a mgr sign it.
$84 out the door and I don't have to spend half my life filling out and tracking stupid rebate forms.

Now I can back up my drive, reformat, and reinstall. Wish I knew why my system keeps randomly rebooting. :(

I jumped on this deal on Sunday. Tried to get 2 160GB HDs (to run in RAID 0) but the CSR won't allow (only 1 PM per customer) so I added the 8X DVD+/- drive. Added the $30 off $150 coupon to bring the total price down to $133 (after abou $10 tax). There's a $30 rebate for the DVD burner so that brings the price after rebate and tax to $103. Sweet! But getting 2 160GB drives to run RAID 0 would be even sweeter but eh...I already have 2 120GB Maxtors for that heheh.

Also called back to add the free 3-piece American Tourister travel set ($74 value).

Still have a $50 Staples giftcard from Amex. Wondering if I should go back for another 160GB...hrmm....

I went to customer service and asked if they would pricematch the Maxtor HD. They had to call CompUSA and they got thrown few a through loops, but in the end CompUSA had it and they gave me a full 110% pricematch on the hard drive. Their price was $149... something like that. Ended up getting the drive for $72.99! I was thinking they'd just do a 100% match, yet I was wrong. Best experience i've ever had in buying a computer part. Everyone was real nice and the manager thanked me for shopping at the store, and I said thanks for the hard drive. A couple of the employees seemed real suprised... like why didn't I find about about this ad, but were helpful anyways. A+ for Staples, and giving me a good deal on the HD.

I decided to get in on this deal. I checked online at four different compUSA's in my area and they all showed in stock. I dug up the ad from the Sunday paper and headed to my local BB at 8:20pm. I got there found the drive on the shelf, took it up to Customer Service. They took like 10 minutes to call and verify. When the teenage CS employee came back he informed my that the local (across the street) CUSA was out of stock. I asked him to check the other store 8 minutes away. He said they only match their LOCAL competitor's prices, and that the one down the road (8 minutes away) was not their competitor. *shrug*

So at 8:50pm I grabbed the ad back and headed 10 seconds to the next parking lot where Staples is located to see if they would match. They already had the gates semi closed, but I made it and showed the ad to the sales woman. She picked the phone to call the local CUSA. I was bracing for letdown, when I heard her say "Well do any of your other stores have it in stock?" She said thanks, hung up and inormed me that there were 4 available in the Dallas area so I could get the price match. AND %110 at that!

$72.99 + 6.02 tax = $79.01 out the door.

GG Staples! Barf on BB.

Thx to poster, been waiting for cheap upgrade for 40GB replayTV.

if running XP turn off AutoReboot(Start>Settings/Control Panel>System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery/Settings tab>Uncheck Auto Restart) to try to get old-style BSOD with error message that could be googled for more info..and
uh..there are no MIRs on this..straight out the door pricing ..as noted at the Topic headline..is a sweet deal :)

All the latest Xbox bioses now support LBA48 with a G:\ Partition. Drive is installed, and works great. Little to no heat increase, either (5400RPM vs. 7200RPM). :D

Not completely certain. I know that if the OS can handle >120GB, then there won't be any problems if the enclosure is ATA6 (LBA48). If the enclosure has an older controller, though, it'll still only show up as 137GB. I'm not sure about the other way around (i.e., if the OS cannot handle >120GB and the enclosure is LBA48-capable) as I'm not in that situation.
