how do you know it's a maxtor?

CompUSA link shows Mfg Part #: L01P160, when cross-referenced, it returns as a Maxtor drive.

Which of course, figures, being as I just bought one (used, nonetheless) for $85 from a fellow AT'er no more than an hour ago. /sigh

Definately a hot deal. Might have to go pick up a second one..

Ok so I had a couple caveats on this:

1) Maxtor bites ... I know people it's subjective and all HDs are teh same ... but ..

Maxtor sucks. BEtween my family in friends we have had at least 3 times the failure rate with Maxtor drives. I once had 3 Maxtor drives fail on me within 3 month ... they were the original drive and the TWO WARRANTLY REPLACEMENTS I GOT !

2) It's 160GB... which you need BIOS and OS updates generally to support drives that size.

3) Get this from MAxtor site:

Hard Drive Warranty Periods

All Maxtor products purchased on or after May 12, 2003 will carry the following Maxtor Standard Worldwide Warranty policy:
Maxtor Fireball®, DiamondMax® ATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year.
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus ATA drives that have an 8MB cache buffer AND capacities of 120GB or greater will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3 years. All other DiamondMax Plus drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year.
Maxtor MAXLine? ATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3 years.
Maxtor Atlas® SCSI drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.

Retail-Packaged Products Warranty Periods

Maxtor retail-packaged products purchased on or after May 12, 2003 will carry the following Maxtor Standard Worldwide Warranty.

STANDARD WARRANTY
North America Europe, Middle East, Africa Other Geographies
ATA Hard Drive Kits 1 year 2 years 1 year
SCSI Hard Drive Kits 5 years N/A N/A
External Hard drives 1 year* 2 years 1 year
*Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LS has a 90-day warranty in North America

Yes you read right... According to Maxtor, there i a 1 year warranty on the retail kits but a 3 year warranty on the OEM drive itself ... How does that make sense ? The only reasoning I can come up with is that the 1 year warranty applies to the drive rails and things and that a retail drive still gets a 3 year warranty , but that doesn't sound like what they'resaying.

Uhh...dude..STFU.

We've been over this before. Different people have different experiences with different HD makers.

All of them make good drives.

With that being said, Ive had equally bad experiences with WD, Maxtor, and Hitachi/IBM. I dont distrust any of them more than the other.

I love my 120GB 8mb Maxtor though.

Fry's had a 160 GB WD for $89 w/ a $30 rebate ($59!!). I picked one up, it's almost chunp change.

Just picked up the last one at the Miami/Falls Superstore in Miami, FL.. at first, they told me they were OOS, but I asked to walk back there and check.. I moved a few boxes around, and sure enough, one was hidden in the back behind the 250GB drives.

I worked retail long enough to know where employee's hide items so they can buy them later.. someone is going to be pissed. 😀

Me and a buddy of mine just picked up the last 4 (2 each ) from the Perimiter store in Atlanta. Been needing 2 of these to mirror, now I have them. Couldn't resist them at $160 for 320 gb.

Oh yeah, for the warranty listed above.

"Maxtor DiamondMax Plus ATA drives that have an 8MB cache buffer AND capacities of 120GB or greater will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3 years"

Since these are Maxtor Diamond Max Plus w/ 8mb and >120 that would mean this is a full 3 year warranty unless I missed something.

Stand corrected 🙂

Also note the internal warranty says 1 year. So definately correct on the 1 year warranty

I was able to pick one up through a pm @ BB. Luckily there was a cusa within range that still showed stock.

Out the door @ $77.79 tax included! 🙂

Thanks for the head~up on the deal Scrooge2

i was able to price match staples yesterday for this...

does anyone know if i could plop this in an usb 2.0 enclosure and use it as an external HD for my new Dell inspirion 8600 laptop? Or would this not work since there isn't a pci 133 controller card in the laptop? OR will it work and only show a part of the drive? I'd appreciate any info, thanks... what a hot deal!

Damn. I would love to get this, but I only have money in my paypal account. Someone go buy me one and ship it to me, heh.

That will work fine since it's USB. There's no need for any controller card if it's USB interface.

i just picked one up at Culver City, California store. Its on Jefferson in the south LA area.

They had a bunch left. I came in with the printout of the item from the CompUSA manager and handed to a guy he pointed to one of his staff and said:

"MAXTOR 160gb, the one the deals on."

so its for sure maxtor.

Just went to the local Staples, and brought in the ad. I didn't know how their pricematch worked... all I saw was a 110% pricematch guarantee so that seemed good. I went to customer service and asked if they would pricematch the Maxtor HD. They had to call CompUSA and they got thrown few a through loops, but in the end CompUSA had it and they gave me a full 110% pricematch on the hard drive. Their price was $149... something like that. Ended up getting the drive for $72.99! I was thinking they'd just do a 100% match, yet I was wrong. Best experience i've ever had in buying a computer part. Everyone was real nice and the manager thanked me for shopping at the store, and I said thanks for the hard drive. A couple of the employees seemed real suprised... like why didn't I find about about this ad, but were helpful anyways. A+ for Staples, and giving me a good deal on the HD.

Man I got in on this deal yesterday....

Hootie Hooooooo!!! I can't tell you how happy I am. I almost cried when my seagate 80gb died on me, so I was in a pretty damn good mood when I walked out of the store with one of these babies. I even downloaded 6 gigs of anime just to start putting it to work!

FYI: Lots of em in Colorado. 5 people in line with me had the drive. There was about 20 left in Westminster. Prolly more in other cities.

Good luck!
