Saw this on Costco

website. Cendyne Dual Format -R\+R 4x dvd burner internal for $229, they also have the external for $289. Maybe it's a Lite-On?

But nevertheless it's a great price.

I wonder what this is a rebadge of.. I thought cendyne was into rebadging Pioneer's drives, but this is DEFINITELY not a pioneer.

Anyone know?

Quote from the article" Verbatim Corporation and Peripherals Group, Inc., the exclusive licensee of the Verbatim brand for optical hardware products and subsidiary of CenDyne, Inc., today bridge the gap between DVD formats by offering Peripheral Group's first Dual-Format DVD Recorders that support the four most popular DVD formats, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD-R, as well as CD-R and CD-RW."

Sounds like the Verbatim drive to me ....Anyone know if they're any good?

Read somwhere this is a Sony DRU 500 rebadge since Lite-On does not make their own optical drives. This is a very good price. Just waiting for Staples to get it now since I have a $50 gift check and a Rewards Card for $30.

Verbatim is like Cendyne(owned by them ..) ..I'm inclined to believe its going to be either an Optorite 203,Optorite 202 or a Liteon LDW-400D(Sony?)

Does anyone know if they sell this in the store as well as on the web site? I would be interested to try and price match as well. I am not sure which stores price match to costco though, I have done it at bestbuy before.

Bump for more info on drive!

FYI- Lite-On is the biggest producer of optical drives in the world. They entered into a collaboration with Sony back in February to produce Sony's newer multi-format drives. Time will tell if in fact Lite-On is the maker of the new TDK and Cendyne multi-format drives. Lite-On may have initially rebadged some of the Sony Dru 500's to get their own brand out on the market, but you can be pretty sure Lite-On is making their own drives.

The CenDyne and Verbatim are using rebadged NEC drives this is probably the NEC ND-1300

(]ND-1300 a new DVD writer with support for both DVD-formats. No more confusion which format is best or supported by your other DVD players. ND-1300 supports both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. Both formats offers several advantages.

ND-1300 is also equipped with NECs own technique AOPC, Active Optimum Power Control. During the writingprocess the reading quality is monitored and if the reading quality should go down the lasereffect is adjusted so optimal reading quality is achived. ND-1300 is of course compatible with ordinary CD-RW media so you can still use it as a CD-RW. ND-1300 is perfect for users who needs to store large amount of data (max 4.7Gb), fast, flexible and simple.

Speed
Read:
40x max CD-ROM
12x max DVD-ROM

Write:
16x max CD-R
10x max CD-RW
4x max DVD+R
2.4x max DVD+RW
4x max DVD-R
2x max DVD-RW

Seektime
Interface IDE/ATAPI[i/]

Link ND-1300 DVD+-R/RW

I had wondered whatever had happened to NEC's plans for a multi-format drive. Now that there seems to be several multi-format drives around we will finally see the prices for them start to come down some.

does anyone know when the next jump in write speeds is going to be and how fast the next generation will be?

Next speed jump will most likely be to 8x and that's probably the fastest they'll ever get. People are predicting next year or end of this year for 8x to be introduced.

Just a FYI that I noticed.

The internal unit is rated as follows:
DVD-ROM Burning Speed: DVD+/-R 4x, DVD+RW 2.4x, DVD-RW 2x
CD Burning Speed: 16x CDR, 10x CDRW

The external unit is rated as follows:
DVD-ROM Burning Speed: 4x (all media)
CD Burning Speed: 24x CDR, 8x CDRW

So I suspect the external unit isn't not the internal unit encased in a driver enclosure.....they're different drives.

My $.02

While looking at the specs and system requirements I noticed this drive is not listed as supporting W98 but does support XP, ME, and W2K. I thought this was a little strange and possibly an omission, but I found a website listing the same information for the NEC 1300 and apparently it just doesn't support W98. This is a big minus for me. I use W98 and actually like it and don't want to have to upgrade operating systems to add a DVD burner. Hopefully this is a mistake, usually ME and 98 are listed together under system requirements. So if you are a W98 user planning to buy this drive you might try to find out for sure first. Other muti-format drives - the TDK 440N, Sony DRU series, and Lite-On 400D all support 98SE

the external drive uses USB interface. W98 does not support USB interface, whereas 98SE and newer OS does support USB. so if you're looking at the system requirement for the external drive, this seems to fit the description.

Neither the internal or external drive are listed as supporting W98 or 98SE. The NEC 1300, which is what this drive is supposed to be, doesn't list supporting 98 either.

what makes this hotter? costco's fabulous return policy. i'm talking about i've seen people return raggedy-azz tv's with no box, just a remote. get cash on the spot. i hear about them only giving back store credit too, but that's still good.

hot deal if i didn't just get a cendyne (pio) -R drive. dual format isn't doing it for me just yet, as -R media is cheaper. but if i didn't buy it, i would def. jump on this one. as for how people like it, check out threads from here:

I believe that this CenDyne drive is definitely the NEC ND-1300A. From what I know, there are only 3 manufacturers of dual format drives: Ricoh, NEC, Sony. The specs of this drive match the NEC's specs to the tee. Here is a review of the ND-1300: review

I've also heard that the 1300's OEM price is supposed to be $30-50 above the 1100's OEM price, which from what I see on PriceWatch, is approximately $160-170. That would make a 1300 OEM about $200. I think it's a great deal then to get this retail box for $30 more, along with Costco's wonderful return policy.
