Not sure I can recommend this printer. I printed out a picture on one of these recently on Kodak photo paper and still saw the streaks on the photo. The streaks I'm referring to are the ones that the printhead creates when it goes back and forth on the paper. Maybe it was the paper, but from what I've seen I'm not all that impressed. I think I would still go for the HP 5550 that's still on the market. My $.02.

First of all that hp printer will end up costing you hundreds of dollars more in ink. THe canons really do well saving ink and you get many more pages out before your ink is dry. Secondly, go to the store and buy canon photo paper and you will never complain again. This printer is a bit finicky with what paper it uses but they are comparably the same price. Go buy some canon photo paper and you will not be dissapointed. And for black text try the hp 108+ paper. Try it and let us know what you think.

ShotgunEd, is right.. no valid coupon. I tried to look for that but couldn't find it.

I am thinking about i950. Amazon has i950 for $235 and $25 coupon for future purchases (exp. june 7, 2003)

I hope another $20 off $100 floats around for Staples, cause $115 for i850 is pretty hot.

You can also get i850 from amazon for $135 with free shipping right now.

I bought the S750 a while back and its been a great value but, it all comes down to what your priority is...

The i850 uses the BCI-3 cartridges which feature the best b&w cost per page on the market, but if you want the six-ink prints go with the i950 knowing you'll be paying the same price for about half the ink in a BCI-6.
If you aren't sure of the difference, head to your local Best Buy, Comp, or Fry's and make the REP do a comparison for you.

Cheers

Atac,
Did you adjust the print quality? Mine did that (s750) and I adjusted the quality to "Fine" which cured the streaks.

I purchased the i850 twice from Dell and personally hate the printer since the Cyan, Magenta and Yellow are fine but the black, it's just shooting out too much ink that it bleeded through regular paper that messed up the image and then even for photo papers, the Canon samples they included, the black ink was just way too wet that it left like residue on the pictures.

use the $20 off $100 coupon
and bring it down to $115...

Umm...

199 - 149 = 50 * 110% = 55
199 - 55 = 144 - 20 (off 100) = 124

How do you get to $115?

Yeah

do 110% pricematch on staples(they have it for $199), and it comes down to $135
He did the 110% part wrong. Should be $145, not $135

Where did you come up with "same price for about half the ink" ? Is that only true for b&w or for color cartridges as well?
How Can a Rep do a comparison to prove your point?

I'm listening :)... I'm just not sure how.

Thanks

thinlizzie, how did you make this discovery?
Can anyone else confirm that this paper works well with the i850 or i950?
Any other paper recommendations for this printer?

Anyone brave enough to try 3rd party ink yet?

Well I had the Epson Photo 780 (or whatever that piece of crap was) and when I bought it also ordered about 5 boxes of the Epson Matte paper. I ditched the printer but decided to give the paper a try. I was stunned! The Canon did a better job with the Epson paper than did the Epson printer with their own paper!! LOL

So what I do is I keep a supply of Canon Photo Paper Pro (4 x 6 sheets) on hand for the wife who only uses the little canon print utility, I use the Matte stuff and print right out of Photoshop because in PS I can put multiple shots on one sheet of 8.5 x 11 and cut out the photos.

People complain that the print life may not be as good - I think it's alot like judging anything with aging, you won't know until you get there in 50 or 70 years. My feeling is if Epson claims 70 year print life, part of that must be due to the paper chosen. I am using theirs so it can't hurt my odds.

I also dig the Matte finish, never was a fan of glossy.

Oh, you can choose Matte Photo Paper in printer setup when you go to print. Easy as pie.

Okay I also *occasionally* (if it has sat a long time without use) get banding which is easily fixed. Canon offers an alignment utility that is simple to use and only uses a small amount of ink. If that doesn't fix your problem you have clogged nozzles on your printhead.

I actually got one with a defective printhead initially, exchanged it and it has been perfect ever since. I think cnet's 93% rating could be improved if defective printheads never made it onto the market. IMHO.

RE:"Kodak photo paper and still saw the streaks on the photo"

Kodak photo paper SUCKS. Try Epson or better yet, CANON.

i850 (general printing and photo) and the i950 are simply the best out there right now.

Do a Anandtech search for previous threads.

You can get the i850 at SAMs for $136 if you don't want to do the rebate thing.

I havent tried any other paper but use Canon Photo Paper Pro For Pictures

And use HP Bright White Inkjet 108+ for your all purpose and the black text will be superb. try it out and then say that the printer isnt worth every penny.

ok i never actually did this with staples before...

i just called staples... and it doesn't work at all..

they have to put the coupon on before pricematching..
so $199 - $30($150-30 coupon)
$169 110% pricematch with BB = $147.. COLD DEAL..

plus they won't even pricematch with BB anymore cuz they said BB doesn't have it in stock..

bleh.. i'm just gonna get this from mwave for $127...

And the Sam's version (which is what I bought) comes with the USB cable. They market it as the i850s, peel off the sticker, it's an i850. I tried to get Canon to honor the $30 rebate a while back but they smoked me out, told me that Sam's wasn't a participating retailer!

if you open epson i850.. you see a picture of a printer with canon's logo on it... so it's obviously a typo on their site..

Microcenter is selling the Cannon i850 for $130 right now as a part of their 20% off all digital imaging equipment sale. If you PM to Staples, and use $20 off $100 coupon..you could get this for about $100.

...oh. I guess I would only do this if you have a Microcenter near by, since Staples will try to charge you "over night shipping" unless. There is one here in Fairfax, VA. :) I was seriously contemplating this deal, until I found out that Office Depot was selling the Epson C82 printer for $70. I know that the i850 is slightly better, but for $35 or so less...I can live with it.
