Some deals today
A 27" Toshiba with for 124.99
Palm Tungsten for 249.99
Xbox 149.99 but had to buy a 24.99 PRP with it
Sony 685 Receiver for 134.99

I worked at best buy for a few years, and when I was there, employees often created their own "open boxes" one guy would buy something, and return it the next day. it would then go open box, and theyd price it at about 50% off, then rebuy it. never once did anyone get caught, or written up. giving emplyoees shady open box prices was everyday practice. i never did this, but this was one of the dozens of scams that went on daily within bestbuy. i guess since everything is being priced at 50% as open box, anyone could give a version of that scam a try. its not illegal or technicaly against any policies, although it is highly unethical.

Actually, Buds, that scam is illegal. It's called fraud. Whether you would get caught is a different issue, but I wouldn't do it. Besides, it is also highly unethical, as you pointed out.

Don't BB employees have a discount to discourage this type of thing?

By the way, my local BB is also 10% off open items. You can typically beat those prices elsewhere.

discount + open box, why would that discourage anything?

Wha gets me is they are such assholes to customers about the smallest detail with returns or anything else. Yet they let the employees rob them blind.

It's not easy to teach ethics to a bunch of apes. It is impossible to teach them what customer service is all about.

just got back from bestbuy, and bought a open box leather case for my sony clie T665C. it was $29.99 from $39.99, but at another bestbuy like 2 weeks ago, the same open box item was the same $29.99 price. no extra savings on open boxes at the bestbuy i went to.

I stopped by BB today, didn't see much of anything interesting.

Except DirecTV open box buys. Almost pooped myself when I saw a stack of boxes containing 2 receivers and a dish for $19!

Problem is they won't sell them without a contract :( :( :( and to make it worse you can stand in that gawd awful line for eternity only to find out you cannot purchase them at the front registers. Would be nice if they LABELLED them as such! I dunno about you but when I see a $19 price tag on a box I assume I can walk out with the item after paying $19.

Well I *almost* had 4 receivers and 2 dishes for $40.

FSCK BEST BUY

Hmmm...anyone know about those contracts? do they require a CC... or any ID at all? "123 main street, yeah thats it"

standard best buy mark-down on a complete open box item is 10%

you will only get more if there are pieces missing....

Got a returned/open boxed Toshiba Progressive-Scan SD-3800 DVD Player for $99.99+tax. Saved $65.10 from regular price (37.5%).

Saw a long line of people returning stuff in Customer Service. Checkout lines was still crazy. Luckily, I was able to pay in the Video dept. register. Included is a 10 Hollywood Video rental rebate. :)

Went to the Best Buy on Katy Freeway in Houston, Tx. Long lines of people returning all sorts of goodies, but there were almost no open box deals on the shelves. I'm going to try again tomorrow.

Id also consider the scam i described fraud, but whether you can could be successfuly prosecuted is questionable. Employees can price items as they see fit, although there is a reccomended guide in the bestbuy handbook. also buying and returning a product is not illegal. whether one can be prosecuted for doing both in conjuction with eachother is unlikely, but possible. either way, doing it will send you to hell. the reason for unhelpful bestbuy employees can be attributed to many factors, but uncomissioned sales ranks high. employees get paid the same whether they help you or hide from you. hence, most sales associates interests are not alligned with the company. im having some trouble finding bestbuys missions statement, but i can assure you it has nothing to do with why most employees show up to work.

Little bonus:

If you look at the very bottom of the last page of the in-store flyer that starts tomorrow, it say all open box and clearance items are an additional 10% off (taken off at the register).

Checked the Nyack NY store today. Nothing much over 10% off, and most of those items were dated BEFORE Christmas. Guessing there weren't many returns yet as most of us were busy digging out on the 26th.......

I finally scored a good deal on something, heh. Got a Sony Clie PEGN760C for $79.99, it rang up at the register for $349.99. The reason it was so cheap was that they had lost all the accessories for it, software, sync cradle, even the 8MB memory stick that is supposed to come with it. I asked the guy helping me if the had any sync cables for it but he didn't think they did. Sure enough, I found a USB sync cable/charger laying on the shelf with the other PDA accessories for $3.99, regularly $19.99. Also grabbed a tri-fold case for $6.99, regularly $24.99. Total if I had paid regular price, $394.48. Total after discounts with 2 year PRP, (the display already has a scratch, so I figure I'll just trash it before the 2 years is up) was $120.96 plus tax. Deal of the year for me. And on top of everything else, I got a $15 rebate for the case.

certain best buys discount open box a lot more than others. i got to the torrance, west LA stores pretty regularly, and west LA will discount A LOT more than torrance ever has.

Makes the deal a little hotter. Probably have the price adjusted w/ the open box item I bought last friday. Maybe save $10.85. :D
