Belkin Wireless Cable/DSL Router Link (CompUSA #287286)
$199.99 - $50 instant rebate = $149.99

Belkin Wireless PCMCIA card (#287284)
$99.99 - $20 instant - $80 MIR = FREE
(the advert does state that you need to purchase both items to get $80 rebate on Card)

So your total is under $150 for a complete wireless 2 computer set-up!

My comments:
Build you own broadband wireless network for $149.99!! This seems very hot for someone looking for a home network...Although, I personally have never used this brand of wireless set-up so I don't know the quality. Prob works OK in short distances. This system lets you share your broadband and transfer files etc.. with multiple PCs...Note that this deal is with a PCMCIA lappy card...But If you have a second "desktop" system that you wanna connect you can find PCMCIA to PCI adapters that allows you to use this PCMCIA card in your desktop...or you can find decent wireless USB adapters for $100 to allow desktop systems to connect.

Good deal!!

Not sure how compatible the belkin cable router ... no technical information about thsi router ... if anyone finds one please post. I may have to got to CompUSA tomorrow 🙂

Hi Guys,

Picked One up today and set it up pretty easily. So far so good. The Belkin Rep was at the Network booth at CompUSA and he admitted to me that he had never tried it out himself. He also mentioned that the 802.11a model is due this summer.

I looked around for reviews and found very little out there. One point I did like on the belkin site was the networking wizard. It was useful. The product comes with lifetime warranty and unlimited tech support. Mind you I called and was told to leave my name and number and someone would contact me in 48 hours.

Overall, I'm happy. It worked out welll for me. I've been typing this out on my laptop in the kitchen and no problems so far...

Later,

belkin routers suck pretty bad.. not really usable until they address some issues with firmware, by default it blocks every port except the ones that are absolutely neccessary like dns and http, you can unblock ports but you cannot unblock port ranges like 2300-2400. only really usable if all you do is surf the web and do email.. also my belkin router was really unstable, had to be constantly unpluged and reset

I agree with exisle. I just picked up the belkin USB client and it is trash. Sitting next to my SMC Barricade wireless router is still get's low reception. I'm gonna spit out the extra 20 bucks and get the Orinico USB Gold client, which is far better. So in my opinion it's not worth the money still.

HI,

Does it work well? How far can you go from the base? It looks like several people have tried the Belkin and don't really like it. Let us know what you think!!

thanks!!

I would like to hear some more comments from iDazzler who actually has the product.

Listening to these other guys complain about other products is not helpful.

Guys,

To follow up, in terms of actual speeds. I ran the msn broadband speed test from both my physically wired staion and from the laptop using the wireless card. The tests results were as follows: My desktop came in at 683.5 kbps while the laptop returned 387.3 kbps.

In terms of distance, I was easily 200 feet away from the base and took it around the house with no disconnect whatsoever. I have not tested it with actual incoming calls and stuff to see if there are any issues. Overall it looks good so far...

Dug,

If you're refering to the WEP. No I did not. As well, I should correct the 200 feet to 100 feet.

The config manager lets you setup all of that. I am no network guru by any means...

Hey Dug, I take back what i said about the belkin usb client. It's awesome! you should run out to compusa and pick it up now, since they are gonna be flying off the shelves. Hope I'm "helpful", more so then last time.

Bought it and returned it the same day.

I have a wireless system set up from Actiontec, it's a wireless card in a machine connected to my lan, and then a wireless PCMCIA in my laptop and the total cost for both was $40.00, because it runs on a propriatary signal. It's more consistent and has more distance than the Belkin which surprised me.

I can see setups like the Belkin being dumped for next to nothing when the 802.11a is the standard with speeds of 54 Mbps so I've decided to wait and get faster speeds or rebuy this one in the near future for next to nothing.

This Belkin deal is just that... it's a deal. You do get what you pay for in wireless. I mean $150 for a complete system is right on! Heck.. you would pay almost this much for the wired system after buying the cable router for $80 + cabling, crimpers and spending the time running cable 🙂

I personally have tried 2 different wireless Access Points...the Linksys BEFW11S4 and the SMC "Barricade" 7004AWBR (both wireless AccessPoints + Cable router... But the SMC has a built-in print server too which is nice). Either one of these can be had from time to time using rebates, coupons etc for about $150.00.

In my house I tried the 2 models and with the 2 PCs about 55 feet away from each other I got very good signal and tranasfer rates. In fact the remote PC and the Wired PC got similar internet download speeds.

BUT the SMC had slightly better results. So I kept the SMC..

ADDITIONALLY,, the biggest factor in signal strength came when I tried the different USB adapters.... After trying both the Linksys USB and the Orinoco (Lucent) model.....THE ORINOCO GOLD was AWESOME. It "rocked" over the Linksys USB adapter I had been using. I have been running the set-up for a couple weeks and it is flawless.

The Oricoco USB Gold is about $120-150 bucks... so it is a bit pricey. But you may find the PCMCIA adapter for under $100.

So IMO try getting yourself a good router...(SMC, LINKSYS, D-LINK).. and invest the some extra bucks in a good adapter card/usb adapter. This is were the main differences could be.. (at least for me).

MistaVoo- are you being serious?

one minute it sucks then it is good?

What is the real deal?

I have all the Belkin wireless stuff in-house and I'm testing it as we speak. So far the range has been decent - about on-par with the D-Link stuff I have- which uses the same chipset as the SMC products.

The one cool thing about the Belkin wireless router is its ability to mask its MAC address. This would help you "fool" your ISP if they are punks about home networks.

These products also have excellent documentation and lifetime warranty and support.

Pretty good deal if you ask me.

If you are thinking about waiting - then you should hold off until 802.11g products show up next year. I expect that 802.11a products will be very good but they will use more power and have shorter range. THey will also have more trouble with walls etc.
