Warm at best. You can get a much much better laptop from Dell or HP for a hundred or so more.

the averatec is much lighter and more portable than a dell at the same price. I just don't know how sturdy they are

True preslove... but the parameters for use weren't defined. In general the Dell and HP laptops are much better deals.

The Dell and HP laptops are better performance wise but they are also bulky in this price range (~7 - 8lbs). This one is about half that weight. if you are plannning to go for a compact laptop, how hot is this deal ?

The dell compacts start at ~$1500+

EDIT: I have used the Dell I8200, I8500 laptops and they are very nice but they are also on the bulky side. Very had to carry around. I was wondering as to how good this deal is if you are planning to carry it to school each day.

Normal use: word processing, web surfing, Coding, compiling.
Occasional/Rare Use: Running some strategy games.

Earlier, i had bought the Dell machines b/c of gaming but it ended up that i was playing games on them for like once every 15 days and they were a pain to carry around whole day on campus.

The cons I've heard is it isn't very strong and is less damage resistant than say a Dell. Also the video isn't all that great 3D wise. If I didn't have a company issued notebook I probably would have bought this.

I would say if I can buy this laptop for 640 dollars and put a 3 years extented warranty on it, it will be a good deal.
This is a very lightweight laptop and it is very easy to bring around the campus for normal program coding, IE, word processing and movie. However, if you are talking about playing 3D games, I don't think you are being fair to this laptop since it never has a sell point with its 3D graphic performance.
And the HP or Compaq are just way too heavy to bring around in a bagpack without looking like a geek.

It's a good machine, I have one. Very nice and light and compact, and for my uses, runs fast! It has CDRW, dvd combo drive, 3 usb (1.1 I think), a very sharp screen, and weighs less than 4.5 lbs. No problems so far. Nothing anyone else offers really comes close to the weight/price point. If you don't mind giving up the RW drive, and the built in WIFI, the Averatec/Sotec 3120 is the same machine with a Celeron 1.3 or 1.2 processor, and can be had on Ebay new for about 500-$600.

This machine is great to travel with, and can be expanded up to 650mb of memory. Only drawback is that it is not a Pentium M, so battery life is 2-3 hours instead of 5-6hrs.

If you want a 9lb machine, there are better deals, but if you want a sub 5lb. machine, I don't know of anything close in price.

you hit it right on the spot, android.

that what exactly my point as i couldnt find any other laptop under 5lbs for <$900. The next one is ~$1100 which comes out to ~$300 more expensive than this laptop. I think that i am going to purchase it. wish me luck with it.

thanks

i liked the celeron models better... at least they were cheap.

not really light and small. ay this price might as well add $500 and grab a dell 300m. my friend has one and it is sexy

the problem w/ 300m is that they dont have internal optical drives. You will have to carry it (externally) which can be a annoying at times. Plus its $500 extra we are talking about.

anyway, this laptop will come out to ~$820 AR (including tax). Not a hot deal now when you include tax. I tried PMing with staples but no go.
