Question....

It says "Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM Ready"....Does that mean if you don't have a receiver, then you can't get DTS or Dolby Digital Sound. I am taking this as it does not decode Dolby Digital and DTS but rather sends the data to a receiver that can decode that? Any help would be appreciated...I want to buy for a Xmas gift but need to know this one thing...

I just change the max minutes when making SVCD's so that it uses more CDs but stays in a good MB range when burning ;) I decided I Will buy this player for the bedroom :D

Usually when you make a vcd or svcd a 74 minute will max at 740megs and 80 minute at 800megs. I didn't realize it until I was researching it at vcdhelp.com. They do it all the time. Its not the cost of the disc(free) its the thrill of the kill.

If you want a comparable unit that plays VCD's, consider Mintek 1600 from BB. I own one and am very happy with it.

Most of the earlier version of the 1500 are hackable and plays VCD.

Since this DVD player don't play VCD, I don't think this version is CD hackable, but you still can buy a $15 chip and hack it.

Anyway, $45 for a DVD player is still a good deal. Better hurry up, they only have about under 900 left.

Got a AD-1500 and it plays VCDs plus DVDs that would skip in my other DVD player (also supposedly region free too now), my wife doesn't like it because the remote buttons are small and the remote doesn't seem to work that great over about 15 ft away (got a 24ft livingroom with a 60" PTV)
after flashing it I was able to burn a DVD on a DVD burner unit , just didn't have the dolby 5.1 copy feature, so it records stereo (possibly surround sound) nice to have in case you don't have time to watch a rented movie also the mechanical power button is a con compared to most other digital power switches .
read the notes on Apex hacking websites how to tell which 1500 models will flash by cking the serial # needs to begin with an A or D , it will unlock macrovision and regions (I know I'm repeating other posts)
good luck!!

this is a good deal if you need a dvd player that will play almost everything. but i have one gripe about it. the price reflects the quality of the product.
this thing blew a fuse and after opening to inspect it, i was surprised to find out how cheap it was designed. Replacing the $2 fuse didnt solve
the problem either, it would just blow everytime i put a new one in. i never figured what went wrong with it so it chunked it and spent some
money on a sony instead. sorry for the rant.

one of the best purchases i ever made. especially after that hack. i wasn't too happy with another apex player that i bought (ad-1200) from circuit city, but i decided to give apex another try after seeing the reviews on vcdhelp.com last year. i got a GREAT deal at $50 from compusa last year, so $45 is tempting me to get another one. And i don't even need it!!
great post jokersmoker!

What about the Apex-5131 they have at Sams Club? I was in there this weekend and they had a full pallet of these. Right on the box it said DVD/VCD. Not only that it is a 3-disc changer so you don't have to get up during the midde of the movie to swap out discs. Anyone own one of these? I think I am going to replce my Shinsonic 100A with an Apex, the Shinsonic plays VCDs, but its only 1 disc.

EDIT: Apex 5131 at Sams is $89

your link is not working, but I think you are referring to probably the 5131-2, the version that doesn't support VCDs. Doesn't the box on this version not say VCD anywhere on it? My point is that at Sams Club they are selling the older 5131 models that still support the VCD/SVCD feature without a hack.

However Showdown now you can't play any burnt vcd's nor will it play svcd's etc.. Never buy from sony.. they are the worst for supporting anything non standard "cdrs cdrws mp3 etc.." they are also very proprietary and do not wish anyone to use any standard they have not created. Sony makes a nice product.. as long as you only want it to do one thing.
I have a Pioneer that plays VCD and SVCD and cannot have been any happier with it.. I'd much rather have it than a sony. I am buying TWO of these APEX'S for inlaws and mum and pop's Xmas.. can't beat the price If they are bad I'll send em back I guess.

This is an exceptional deal. Let's hope we get the A,B,C or D model. I understand the "SV" model is old and most likely not the model we'll get.

Some warning here......I have a CompUSA "C" model and just 2 days ago it quit reading ALL discs! It was only 1 month old and hardly used. I had hacked the firmware, but that was a month ago. It ran DVD's and SVCD's just fine. I've seen posts from others that had the same thing happen.

Dead deal.

"Whoops! Looks like this popular, limited-quantity item has just sold out. We're very sorry to disappoint you. However, lots of great bargains are still available!"
