I jumped in on this towards the very end of the initial deal... when there was a drop to $790+tax so it was like $830 for me through my SB rep. Plenty of spec reviews out there now, but Here are my subjective comments:
1.) The order was placed through SB, and the description was tied to an Optiplex self-install. So likely for a time this window of pricing was opened and then closed when the order volume jumped higher than expected. Whatever the case Dell minimum prices don't increase so rest assured $800-850 should be back soon enough. Personally I think it will eventually settle into the $700 (hot deal) range so as to be staggered appropriate with the 2001/2005FP.
2.) As others have said there is no fan, but it is warm. Fortunately it's so big you are far enough away it isn't an issue. The pixel size is a little bigger - so the 1200 dimension on this is about a half inch bigger than the 1200 on the 2001FP's. It also seems much improved with respect to the screen door grid visible on 2001FP's. 2001FP's didn't bother me but that was a big stink for awhile so there you go.
3.) I was replacing one of my 2001FP's and what I did notice was that the contrast was much, much better. For example on many pictures - there were shadings and graduations that you could not see on the 2001FP, but that were very clear on the 2405FP. Had I not had both monitors setup side by side (I have a dual DVI vid card) I would have never noticed. It also has the capability to be much brighter. I had it setup alongside my 2 2001FP's and these results were consistent - so I didn't have some buggy or miscalibrated 2001FP. Not even considering the specs - it has visibly better contrast than 2001FP's.
4.) It's big, almost too big. People talking about 27" and 30" monitors - well, I thought the same thing before buying this and now I must say, 24" is big enough. It's hard to explain but anything bigger would either require you to sit too far away, or require you to pan your head quite a bit to see all of the monitor. Having this much screen on a single monitor is different than a dual monitor setup. With duallies you basically adjust to having two focal points, toggling back and fort depending on which one you need data off of. This is of course assuming you have rather average eyes like me and run at 1920x1200. I suppose if you ran the thing at 800x600 for some reason you could sit real far away and the size would seem smaller.
But running just one big monitor you only have a single focal point and end up moving your head a lot more, panning just to read text on the far outsides. It's pretty hard to explain until you experience it. But once you do - I can't imagine I'll ever need a bigger productivity/desktop use monitor - given normal desktop use. Bigger might be ok if you want to use it as a console gaming monitor or a TV, or in a unique setup like wall mount or stand-up Vesa situation - but as a PC monitor - it's big enough.
5.) No ghosting. But then again I didn't notice any on my 2001FP's either. Killer gaming monitor imho. +mine had no pixel defects, so for Dell LCD's I'm now 5 out of 5 (whew).
