I was surfing through the channels the other day and noticed the HBO HD channel, so I called them up, and as of a couple weeks ago Adelphia is now carrying ABC, NBC, HBO, and Showtime in High Definition! All you have to do is call them up and make an appointment for a tech to come out to your house and install the new box. They take the old one, and there is no extra charge for the HD channels or box! I am sure that Adelphia probably has started this in other markets, I just know that it is available in Cleveland for sure. Now if only they would have CBS and FOX so I could catch 24 and CSI in HDTV! They said the service is brand new and they will be adding more channels very soon.

Oh, and a word of caution for anyone making the box switch. Don't waste your time going to pick it up if they tell you that you can just bring your old box in! I was told that on the phone and wasted 45 minutes of driving only for them to tell me that they aren't allowed to give them out to customers, and that a tech needs to install it. It doesn't really make any sense, since all the tech does is hook up the component cables to your TV (and mine didn't even do that, I did).

Comcast in the DFW area rolled out alot of HDTV areas also.... but they charge extra fees, think its $5-10 a month.

The only fee for Comcast is for the HDTV box( which is actually about .75 cheaper than the regular digital box). If you already have a digital box its actually a bit cheaper to get an HD box. If you don't have a box its $5.00 for a box and you get NBC, FOX and ESPN(HBO and Showtime if you subscribe to those).

Well worth the $5.00 a month for ESPN Sunday night football and FOX nonHD( but still a lot better than normal football) alone. Hopefully we will get CBS soon(Super Bowl and lots of good Primetime stuff).

Time Warner in central NY charges $10/month extra for 4 HD channels (CBS, ABC, PBS, NBC)...what a ripoff...no ESPN HD or anything.

Don't worry ESPN HD only does HD like once a week anyways, not much to miss.

Yeah, I don't believe that there is any charge at all for the HD box in Cleveland. I will find out when I get my next bill I suppose! :D

do you get the HD channels with regular digital cable? Or do you have to have other things ordered to get them?

Fox doesn't even broadcast in HD

I wasn't getting all technical ROLLTIDE, because there was no need to. For all intents and purposes, FOX broadcasts might as well be HD, because you still need an HD receiver of some sort to get them, and they are definitely much higher quality than regular TV. BUT, if you really want to be technical about this, like I missed a comma somewhere in a sentence, then no, FOX does not broadcast "true" HD yet, but FOX will be broadcasting HD very soon, if they haven't started already. Just read this article to see for yourself. They will be converting all of their markets to 720p by the end of 2004.

I consider 480p, the current resolution with which I view 24 in on my parents' 65" HDTV with OTA tuner, to be HD, because it is most certainly higher-definition than regular television.

For comcast you do not have to subscribe to digital cable to get HD. I was going to have HD with regular expanded basic cable(would have included ESPN-HD as ESPN is part of the expanded basic package). In the end I decided to sign up for the Digital Silver package so I could try out HBO-HD and Showtime-HD, but it was not a requirement to get an HD box.

I have to agree that FOX 480p is still like a night and day difference to regular Fox. The closeup shots in football are amazing. Its also in widescreen, thats a nice bonus compared to regular Fox. Even normal programming on the HD channels looks better(no picture degradation due to signal loss).

Yup, I'll take 24 in 480p vs. standard CATV any day!

I can't wait to get ESPN in HD, so I can catch a Cavs game in it someday!
